Wisconsin Is Once Again Coming Alive After A Long Winter

My husband and I took a chance this weekend and visited a trail that we thought would be very wet and mushy after the long winter…..but to our surprise it was very nice and had very few wet spots.

There is nothing better than seeing wildlife and individuals out and about coming back to life, shall we say, after being cooped up all winter protected from the snow and cold.

We walked for maybe a bit more than an hour on this trail and we saw and heard so much it was literally music to our ears.

It was so peaceful and such a wonderful relaxing walk. That is until…..I almost stepped on two of these just before heading back to our vehicle.(Pics are courtesy of my husband since I did not hang around to capture the moment)

There is something to be said about a leisurely walk through the woods after a long winter.

****Just in case your all counting since I seem to attrack snakes….the snakes are winning so far this year. I have gone on two spring hikes and have seen 4 snakes total so far. It looks like it may be a stressful year of hiking for me.

Happy Spring Everyone!!!!!!

Spring has finally arrived which means I SURVIVED ANOTHER WISCONSIN WINTER!!!!!!

It is always a great feeling when another winter is behind me. I can’t wait to go to farmers markets, see bright flowers, sleep with the windows open, have picnics, and so on. What is there not to love about Spring?

IMG_1761

I celebrated Springs arrival this weekend by first assisting with some yard work.

IMG_3719

Then we slipped on our hiking boots and visited a trail that is off limits in the heat of summer thanks to an over abundance of snakes. IMG_3729

IMG_3738

I went to lunch with some friends and enjoyed a healthy veggie wrap and pasta salad.

IMG_3761

Visited a “new to us” library for some audio books for my husband and some new story books for our spring break week this week. IMG_3721

Visited the gym for a workout with my hubby.

And the rest of the weekend was spent relaxing.

What did you do to celebrate the beginning of Spring?

Feast With The Beast 2015 Recap

Every year for about the past 5 years or so we have an annual date night. A local zoo closes down to the public and hosts Feast With The Beast where area restaurants set up tables and hand out samples from their menus.

IMG_1641

IMG_1910

Upon arrival you receive a map of the zoo telling you where each restaurant is located and what their featured sample(s) are. I wish I could tell you we have a strategy but honestly, we don’t. There is so much food, wine, and beer that no matter where you begin and end you will leave completely full.

IMG_1886The trickiest part of the entire night is holding your plate, eating, and walking all at the same time. Many of the sample tables are set up very close together and the lines move very quickly. So typically, unless you find a spot to put down your plate and enjoy one sample, you find yourself in line for the next before the first is even gone.  IMG_1879

This year there were 47 tables/restaurants offering a sample….many offered two! Some are fancy, newer restaurants in the area

IMG_1891

IMG_1880

and some were well known restaurants serving just some signature dishes.

IMG_1890 IMG_1884 When you find yourself starting to fill up, don’t forget to walk around and enjoy the actual zoo experience while your there. Many of the animals were begging for a taste of what we all had in our hands. I even felt bad for a few, but not bad enough to share anything I had.  IMG_1899

You could also sit and listen to the live music and take a break and then go back to your favorites if you still have the room for a second helping.

IMG_1907For $35 a ticket you can enjoy two hours in a great outdoor setting, eating some fabulous food, try new drinks, all while listening to the very funny comments as guests leave with VERY FULL STOMACHS.  IMG_1896  IMG_1902

My husband swore he was going to have stretch marks on the drive home. HAHAHA. And I over heard another gentleman state that he felt like he was in his third trimester while rubbing his stomach. (If only he knew the truth about what that felt like) So be careful, an event like this could cause some very uncomfortable hours if you over indulge a little too much.

Have you ever gone to an event like this?

Did you like it?

A Look Back At June 2015 In Pictures

As you all know from reading, this month has been very discouraging for me and my family. However, we have still been finding time to get out and enjoy the summer weather. Here is a look back at June 2015 in pictures.

I hope you enjoyed looking back with me through our June events. I have high hope that July brings better health to my husband and that we can get back to the life we are used to living. We miss paddling our rivers with our whitewater kayaks more than you could all imagine. That being said, I sure am not minding the extra time I have been getting on my standup paddle board while he does water therapy for his back pain. Who needs a pool when you live near so many lakes…..water therapy can be done anywhere and that is exactly what we have been doing.

Silver Creek Park Disc Golf- Manitowoc, WI

We have been to many disc golf courses in our area. Recently we visited Silver Creek Park Disc Golf Course for the first time in Manitowoc,WI and I am very happy to announce I have a new favorite.

This place has everything I love. It’s like disc golfing while hiking. Upon arrival you will head to the field house.

IMG_1213

There is a nice parking area here and bathrooms on the side of the field house. I suggest using them as this is a 27 basket course. IMG_1152

Your first basket is located a short walk from the parking area. Take a look at the map provided and watch for a bright yellow donation can at basket #1.

IMG_1149

IMG_1155

My first impressions were wonderful. Trees were everywhere and water hazards are located at many of the baskets.

IMG_1157

IMG_1165

There are hills around every corner….and when I say hills I mean HILLS. Here is basket #13. If you over throw your disc you are going to be making a long hike down to then again make the long hike back up to finish the round.

IMG_1176

Then you move onto basket #14 to then make the throw across the soccer field from the top of a big hill over across to the the rivers edge. All while making sure you don’t over step the tee pad or you will be taking a tumble down the hill yourself.

IMG_1178

You will eventually cover this entire park from every angle. There are bridges to cross under

IMG_1183

and then over.

IMG_1190

There are baskets that bring you right along the Lake Michigan shore

IMG_1200

with one basket that you will be throwing your disc straight at the lake with very little room for mistakes.

IMG_1203

You may even get lucky and run into some wildlife while playing here….we did.

IMG_1196

All in all I would say this course is one of the very best we have ever played at. The signage is spectacular and the terrain is a great workout.

IMG_1166

IMG_1168

There is no doubt that you will enjoy playing here. However, I would make a few suggestion to anyone thinking about visiting. This course is steps from the Lake Michigan shoreline which is always cooler than inland. A light jacket may be appropriate. This is also a very long, strenuous course with numerous hills. You may want to have a snack with you for refueling. We actually played the first 14 baskets which then brought us back near the parking lot where we stopped to have a quick snack before finishing. (we packed some snacks ourselves and had them in our vehicle)

IMG_1198

And one more thing…..if your find yourself searching in the tall grasses/wooded areas watch for poison ivy…..it’s everywhere!

Have you ever tried disc golf?

What’s your favorite place to play?

Kayak Shopping…..Again!

Last week I mentioned to my husband that I really did not see any need to make the three hour trip this year to our favorite kayaking convention coming up in a few weeks. We really do not need anything, its three hours of driving(which I hate), and we couldn’t fit another piece of watercraft anywhere in our home anyhow.

Let’s just say the look I received from him was of disbelief. He immediately said we were going without a doubt. Then stated that he was hoping to buy another kayak!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh man, I should have known this was coming. Last fall when our son bought his new kayak, my husband did test drive a few on this same day. Although, he just did not fall in love with anything at the time so we ended up leaving with just the one our son purchased.

IMG_0989

And now since he really has not said another word about buying another kayak since that day I had thought and hoped he had decided to stick with what he already has. I guess I was wrong.

Now we will be installing the roof rack to the top of the car just in case his search for “the one” appears before his eyes while at the convention. Either way, I believe eventually he will either find the whitewater kayak he is searching for or we will end up with a fishing kayak which he also has been debating for a few years.

I think I better contact the building contractor now to build on to our garage, it’s not going to hold much more.

Walking For A Purpose….Breast Cancer Walk 2014

This past Saturday I rolled out of bed bright and early to do something I love to do….walk. Only today my walk had meaning behind it. I took part in a breast cancer walk to support women with breast cancer.

IMG_0207

In the past year we have listened to our neighbor agonize over what her sister has been going through while dealing with this illness. We have also watched as the mother of one of our son’s friends has fought this battle. I, myself, dealt with quite the scare less than a year ago and will forever remember the feelings I had while this was all happening.

IMG_0219

As you can imagine when I was asked to walk, I gave no hesitation at all. What better reason would I have to walk with such a great group of individuals than to support such a wonderful cause?
