Mother And Son Day Out….We Had One Of The Best Burgers Ever!

Saturday my son and I spent the majority of the day together and it was quite nice. I never in a million years would think he would ask to join me in my plans for the day but surprises happen and this was a surprise. I had planned to travel about 45 minutes from home to a local community for a city wide garage sale event. And since our son recently moved out, he has a few things on his list that he still needs and asked to join me.

We left bright and early Saturday to arrive in Algoma, WI by 8a.m.. Needless to say my husband had no interest in joining us….he had a “honey do” list a mile long anyhow. We toured the town and shopped until my son had $3 left in his pocket and then we called it quits. My SUV was full, our pockets were empty, and by the end of the morning so were our stomachs. We needed to fix this last problem so we had been hearing about a fairly new hamburger restaurant that is operated by a very successful high end dining establishment also in the same city. Skaliwags 2…..or Skaliwags Burger Co. is right around the corner from the original Skaliwags and this one only sells burgers. Located on the main drag in this small city….604 4th St., you can easily locate it and have one of the best burgers I have ever had in my life!!!!

IMG_1386

This place is tiny, very clean, restaurant staff was very friendly, and the food was worth the small wait. IMG_1387

IMG_1388

They have a number of sides you can choose from. Burgers are prepared to your liking. And many are chef inspired creations that you must try.

IMG_1392

Our day was completed after this meal…you can only imagine why. We were exhausted from garage shopping all morning and then having one of the best burgers ever. If your in the Algoma, WI area, I would highly recommend a brief stop at Skaliwags 2.

Weekend Adventures: It’s Just Too Hot To Stay Home

In Wisconsin you can usually count on a few days each summer that it gets hot….I mean really HOT!!!! Add some wicked humidity and that is a great combo for sickness and heat exhaustion if you do anything outside for an extended period of time. However, I am a summer lover and refuse to miss even one weekend inside. So I had to think fast and come up with a plan for this past weekend since it was hot…..added with the humidity levels we all had here and we were easily above 100 degrees. Thankfully we are surrounded by water and many times the lake shores are much cooler. So that is where we headed and believe it or not, the temps varied greatly from place to place all day.

First, we started our day at a new park we stumbled upon. Lakeside Park is located in Jacksonport, WI and right along Lake Michigan. The main reason for stopping was to use the facilities but often times these are the times we find the best spots with very little people.

IMG_1230

IMG_1231

A nice area to park, great playground that is well kept for children to enjoy, bathrooms, and a short walk to a public beach(no lifeguards….swim at your own risk). If you can tolerate the water temperatures of Lake Michigan this would be perfect since it was not packed at all. Truthfully, it was us and one other lady. Not bad for a quick last minute stop.

IMG_1232

IMG_1236

Next, we headed to our actual destination. Our whole goal of the day was to try two new disc golf courses in this area and also stop by a friends cabin if we had time before returning back to Green Bay. The first course being right in Jacksonport at the sports complex center. IMG_1239

We played the nine baskets here and then headed a bit further to Sister Bay to try the next new course I had located in the area.

IMG_1252

Both course were fun, cooler than back home temperature wise, and both offered us some time in the sun. I plan to blog about both courses in more detail soon so keep reading and maybe you will want to give them both a try if your in the area.

After two course of disc golf we were hungry. It was about noon and we had seen a wayside with some nice shaded areas to stop for a quick picnic lunch before stopping in by a friends cabin in the area. Apparently, we were exactly half way to the north pole where we were going to enjoy lunch….or at least this is what the plaque said that we found.

IMG_1273

We found the only picnic table empty which was perfect.

IMG_1274

IMG_1277

After lunch we stopped in and enjoyed some float time with our friends. They have a cabin right on a lake in this area and its was great to catch up about their recent vacation and for my husband to finally have some down time from all his work travel he has had.

IMG_1278

IMG_1279

It was a full day of fun outside. I could not have planned us a better day to escape the heat.

Real Quick Pop In Post

This past week was a whirlwind. Once again my hubby was traveling, I was solo, every night had something in it I needed to tend to, and now I am really looking forward to some down time.

Food prep was basic since it was just me. Some cinnamon apples, veggies and homemade dip, and an quick cucumber salad to pair with any meal.

IMG_1204

I also blended some carrot puree for my little people to eat for meal time. I had it all cleaned up and then realized I dated the containers wrong….life goes on. No big deal!

IMG_1216

And the event that made the week was when I went with a friend to attend a food truck rally. Interesting how many food truck are coming about in this area.

IMG_1213

Truck of choice this evening was the King Of Philly’s. Our orders came quickly and both tasted wonderful.

IMG_1207

IMG_1210

Next week I plan to share our weekend fun, two disc golf courses we recently visited and what I thought of each, and then it’s July 4th. Time to celebrate.

Cabin Fever…..This Is Real People!!!

They say a broken heart is a true condition some people suffer from. I also believe that cabin fever should also be on the list of real diagnostic conditions. For me, and I know many others feel this way also, cabin fever is real. And the past two weeks it has been pretty severe. My moods are all over, my energy level I need to dig deep for, and my sleep is some nights great and some nights not so great. And when I listen to the weather…..well, it’s normally best not to listen to the weather.

Even though temps lately have been tolerable, I know living in WI the weather can turn back to full blown winter in a matter of hours so I try not to get to excited too early.  However, that didn’t stop me from taking my whole gang outside to play for the first time in months. Oh, it was glorious!!!! And it also gave me a big case of cabin fever!!!!IMG_0513

Like I said, I have been struggling and I needed to make a snap decision to turn life back around and get some air. All this took was a bit of thought, a quick email to my husband that I needed a break from life, and a few things thrown into an overnight bag…..and I was off on an overnight adventure to find myself again. Saturday morning I quickly threw together a penne pasta casserole for Sunday when I returned home to toss into the oven for dinner. This way I would not need to hurry home for any reason….and walla we were off to find sunshine, fresh air, and hopefully open water and not ice bergs. IMG_0520

Like usual, I chose the destination and I wanted somewhere I had never been before. I also knew I needed to be around water(two places that bring me peace are one around water and  two atop mountains…..WI has a ton of water and no mountains so my options were limited) and I needed everything in walking distance since I hate driving in strange cities. I made some strict rules for my husband to follow since he asked to join me in my 24 hrs. of solitude…..no job talk, I get to choose all the restaurants, I get to walk as far I my body will let me, and I get control of the remote control when we finally do decide to rest. He happily agreed and then was allowed to join me in my adventure.

IMG_0677

My destination ended up being Port Washington,WI. I had never been here and neither had my husband. IMG_0558

Upon arrival, it was sunny, gorgeous, and the ice had all melted and left open water and miles and miles of harbor walk for us to enjoy.

IMG_0555

IMG_0619

IMG_0581

IMG_0574

IMG_0566

We walked mostly paved walkways but we also did climb some pretty big boulders to make our way out to some of the lake markers that I don’t know know if we should have but we did anyhow. There were no Do Not Enter signs but clearly no one else was taking this route except us. It felt so good to be alive and breathing fresh air again that I really did not care if we would have found the game warden/or the dock master waiting for us when we returned.

IMG_0584

IMG_0593

IMG_0580

IMG_0624

IMG_0627

We explored for miles…..we saw so much beauty and I even got to sit on one of the piers for a bit and just let my mind clear itself.

IMG_0595

We paid tribute to a fellow kayaker by climbing to the top of his memorial gazebo which personally, could not have been placed on a better part of land. It overlooks where he lost his life and this is somewhere that can honor him and his love for paddling forever. Being a kayaker myself, I can truly see why he was paddling the waters of Lake Michigan….so gorgeous.

IMG_0606

IMG_0608

IMG_0607

After all this walking, more sunshine that I have gotten on my face in over 6 months, and even a bit shopping on the historic street next to our hotel….we were tired. We checked into our hotel located right on the harbor walk and walked to dinner before turning in for the evening. And believe it or not….I could not find a single thing on television to keep my interest so I handed over the remote control to my husband with a kiss goodnight….and that was that.

IMG_0614

I will soon fill you all in on where we all ate and the absolutely fabulous meals we had in this area of the city. We also already have plans to return as a family. Only next time, fishing poles, tackle, cameras, tripods, picnic blankets, and coolers will all be added to the packing list. Maybe even a few kayaks, paddles, and PFD’s.

Weekend Recap….REI Garage Sale Deals, BBQ, and a Trail

We had a fantastic weekend….I can’t believe it’s over with already.

Our weekend started with an early morning rise and shine wake up at 4a.m. to leave and hit the road by 5a.m. and travel to our nearest REI outdoor store for a “garage sale”. This is something we do about twice a year and this time we brought our son and his friend along for their first one ever. Even though it was cold(very cold) and very early…it sure was nice to stand in line and talk with individuals that have done we we do. Many of us have seen the same places and have experienced the awwww that we have experienced in our adventures. The way that we can all understand each other and the need to be outside and in nature is something I cherish since many people don’t understand the meaning behind what we do. Anyhow, this is always quite an event. We have seen breakfast prepared in line numerous times.

IMG_7193

It’s sort of like Black Friday for outdoor lovers since there is always people that camp out overnight.

IMG_7194

However, this time we really were quite chilled. I ended up sitting in the vehicle twice to warm up in two hours of waiting in line, all while the guys kept our spot.

IMG_7195

In the end it was all worth it. I found my next pair of Keen hiking boots, my first pair of Chaco sandals, my husband found some treasures, and so did our son. Well worth the early wake up call, the chill we had for the rest of the day, and the fun we had chatting with others.

After this it was one more retail store….Trader Joe’s….oh boy, did we find treasures here and then it was time to eat lunch. We were all very hungry and I had been told of this BBQ restaurant in the near by city of Grafton from a friend. Which was also on our way home so we decided to give it a try. What a nice little city this ended up being.

IMG_7196

We found this restaurant easily located off the highway.

IMG_7198

The atmosphere was clean, friendly and welcoming.

IMG_7199

The menu was huge….so much to choose from and so many great entrees.

IMG_7200

And when our food arrived I was in heaven. And remember, I am not a big meat eater and this was some of the best BBQ I have ever eaten. I ordered the brisket reuben and its was fabulous.

IMG_7201

It was so huge I hardly touched my fries. They offer six different style BBQ sauces at the table for you to choose from and numerous different sides to replace the fries if you wish.I highly recommend visiting this place if your in the area of Grafton, WI and love BBQ.

Sunday consisted of meal prep, chores, and a solo trail walk since the hubby was off doing his own thing and our son was working.

IMG_7212

I came across the first snake sighting of 2017 that I could actually capture a picture of since he had no hope of moving anytime soon. If you know how much I LOVE  despise these creatures, you will also know this was the best way for me to see them….dead!

IMG_7204

I also witness a boy catch a very nice northern pike on the Bay of Green Bay ice fishing.

IMG_7218

All in all it was a wonderful weekend. Lots of family time, some alone time, and some much needed fun all wrapped into two days.

Hiking Terrell’s Island

After a great suggestion from a fellow reader I finally found time to get out and hike Terrell’s Island near Omro, WI.

IMG_5453

This trailhead was fairly easy to find and offers ample parking and of course the most important part….a port a potty.

IMG_5454

IMG_5449

Upon arrival you will notice many signs of what is allowed and what is not allowed at this area. There are trail maps and information boxes with a lot of information nearby.

IMG_5448

IMG_5451

IMG_5458

IMG_5455

As you can see this trail is mark handicap accessible which is so wonderful. Not many long trails are so accommodating to persons with disabilities.

We decided to actually begin this trail backwards since the wind was strong and in the direction of blowing us backwards if we would have began at the #1 trail marker. Here is where we began our hike.

IMG_5457

This trail is actually a breakwater path that leads in and around a large area of Lake Butte Des Morts, which means we were almost always surrounded by water.

IMG_5459

IMG_5467

IMG_5468

IMG_5483

IMG_5485

IMG_5486

There are ample opportunities to sit on provided benches and rest if needed.

IMG_5470

IMG_5500

Eventually, I would say about a mile or so, from the end of this trail you will leave the waters edge and enter into a marshy area.

IMG_5497

IMG_5502

At trail marker #4(remember we are going backwards) you will see in the distance another port a potty.

IMG_5498

You will finish the trail at the parking lot you began at, almost 4 miles later.

IMG_5503

IMG_5507

We really enjoyed this hike. It’s long enough to offer a good walk, it’s on the water which is a plus for us, it’s well cared for by the club that owns it, and offers many different sights along the way. My advise to you would be, if it’s windy or cooler make sure you have a jacket. On the day we did this hike it was about 50 degrees and 15-20 mph winds which made it quite chilly.

IMG_5465

I would highly recommend this hike to anyone.

I Am Ready To Hike Mountains Again… Plus Some Weekend Snapshots

Another summer weekend with sun, fun and family has come and gone. With a bonus being I had a three day weekend which I wasted no time enjoying. First, let’s catch up a bit on last weeks big news.

Last week was a little nuts around here. I decided that after our family vacation to Minnesota’s North Shore and no real issues with the hiking/rock bouldering that we did during this vacation that maybe I was ready to go bigger once again. My husband knew I was watching flight prices the past year for a trip back south but then January happened and all was scrapped until I felt better again. Well, I believe that time has come and I am once again ready to hike some mountains. This time our destination is Arizona…..and I am over the moon excited to experience life elevated once again. Tickets are purchased, hotels are reserved, and permits have been applied for. Let the planning begin…..

That all happened Tuesday-Thursday….then Friday rolled around and one of my daycare dad’s surprised me by keeping his son with him for the day which meant I had the day off. BONUS!!!!! With no hesitation I made plans from sun up to sun down literally. My Friday started by getting my husband off to work bright and early as usual. Then I ate some breakfast and headed to the gym for a morning workout…..my absolute favorite time to work out.

IMG_3784

Then I called to see if any eye appointments were open yet that day. And another bonus….they had a 10:45 still open…..I took it. I really, really needed to get new prescription sunglasses.

IMG_5032

While waiting for my glasses to be made, I ran some errands and stopped at home to do some laundry. Then my husband returned home and both my boys headed back out for a night of fishing together. I had made plans to have dinner with a friend, do some shopping and walk a recreation trail.

IMG_3328

I finally returned home at 8:15p.m. to quickly make some dinner for my boys when they finally returned home and I went to bed.

Then Saturday rolled around and I was moving pretty slow. I was tired but ready nothing a cup of coffee wouldn’t fix. We had made plans to paddle Sawyer Harbor in Potawatomi State Park. This was our first time here and it was very relaxing. We arrived to find the parking lot was very large, your park pass includes your launch fee, restrooms are on site, fish cleaning house is also on site, and kayakers are very familiar with this area. Here are some pics from our day at Sawyer Harbor.

It was a great day spent doing what we all love. The boys did some fishing, I paddled and tube floated for awhile, we shared a family picnic and later in the afternoon we even managed a hike at this same park.

More on that hike coming up……
