Bonus Freezer Meals, Big Decisions, and Bad Luck For Someone All Rolled Into One Week

After a fabulous Easter dinner last Sunday with my husband and son we had, once again, tons of food left over for the week.

IMG_7429

Which meant I had to come up with ideas to use up the leftovers. From ham soup to ham and hash brown egg bake…we enjoyed ham for a few days.

IMG_7434

I also needed to concentrate on restocking our freezer meals so I planned the weekly menu around doing this. We enjoyed no boil lasagna one night and sloppy joes another. Both meals leaving plenty to package and freeze for fast lunches to send with my husband for work.

Workouts this week were pretty good. I am still dealing with a sore middle back….but foam rolling has been offering some relief. I think some of it may be stress which I am trying to figure out and deal with.

Easter Sunday: 2.5 mile hike with my husband

IMG_7418

Monday: another 2.5 mile hike on the same trail….only much, much colder and windy today and upper body weights at home

IMG_7467

IMG_7456

Tuesday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, abs and legs workout, and foam rolling my back muscles

Wednesday: 3 mile evening walk and upper body weights at home

IMG_5030

Thursday: gym : 30 minute elliptical and stretching

Friday: rest

Saturday: solo hike on two different trails for a total of 4 miles

Some weeks it helps to try and find the positive and not focus on the negatives. Not that it was that bad of a week but there are some decisions I am struggling with and I know I have to deal with them soon. Losing sleep over things I cannot change is one thing but losing sleep over things I can change is another. It’s not good for anyone since I really need my sleep. So I need to get on this and soon.

On the positive side of things….at least I am not this guy with this dilemma!!!!! Mother Nature and her fury won again after a windy ride on the Bay of Green Bay, this guy had his sail ripped right from his hands and thrown up into a tree. Talk about bad luck….Yikes!!!!

Trading The Gym For The Outdoors

Lately, I find myself choosing the outdoors over the gym to get my daily workouts. As the seasons change I typically find this to be what happens, although this year it seems earlier than most for this to be happening.

I am not, by any means, a gym die hard. I do, however, like to keep a routine and try and make it there at least twice during week and twice on the weekends in the winter months. The remainder of the time I just find it more convenient to workout at home. When winter comes to an end, I still try and make it there twice during the week but weekends often are spent outside instead.

IMG_6433

That being said, I can’t help but struggle during the week with going to the gym when the sun is shining and there is so much to be offered outside to get in a great workout. Which means some weeks I don’t make it to the gym at all.

For one, I love to do yoga, weights, and stretching in nearby parks. Find a back corner where there is peace and quiet and you can really clear your mind and get in a good sweat.

IMG_4318

As a family we have come to love disc golf. It’s challenging, it’s often a nice walk through a wooded park, and offers fun while your exercising and you often don’t even realize it.

IMG_4984

You all know if I had to choose a great hike over a visit to the gym….the hike would win every time. Here in the midwest, hiking season is short so I take advantage of every chance I get to log trail miles. Granted, I don’t get to work every muscle group I could be working at the gym….however, hiking is one activity that’s truly brings me peace and let’s me know that I can literally walk away from life for a short amount of time. On the trail I can just let everything go.

Once summer arrives in full force, our paddles come out, get dusted off, and the water calls my name every weekend and even some week nights. From kayaking to paddle boarding, I often struggle with which one to do on which weekend. I know right….what a hard decision to have to make. Believe me…..it really is sometimes.

During the months of June,July, and August I will be very lucky to touch foot in the gym even once. Weekends are jam packed with summer fun and week days are also jammed packed with other types of summer fun while I work. Caring for children during the days in the summer months is twice as exhausting as in the winter months for me. Winter offers the same activities in rotation. Summer, however, leads to all sorts of summer fun….especially when my husband and son are also home to join in the action. Things such as water balloon fights and critter hunting always add to the fun of summer.

Do you prefer to spend time exercising outdoors or inside?

What’s you favorite outdoor exercise?

Happy Easter

Easter has always been my favorite holiday. I am not quite sure why since we never really have a huge celebration or anything but maybe it’s because things are typically getting greener, plants are sprouting from the ground, and signs of life everywhere are beginning to show again after such a long winter. Either way, Easter is reason to celebrate even if it’s just hanging out and doing nothing but being with family on a relaxing Sunday.

IMG_7374

This year we had planned to hike a state park in our area for Easter but with thunderstorms predicted we decided it would be best to cancel. Although, we had enough other things to do to keep us plenty busy.

Speaking of Spring and Easter…..has anyone else found themselves reaching for the allergy medications and the kleenex box yet? I am quite lucky myself, with little to no seasonal allergies. Our son on the other hand has it BAD…and is MISERABLE!!! Along with that, all my daycare kids have runny noses and some sort of allergy/virus plaguing them also. So we are going through the tissues like crazy at our house. However, I am not going to lie and say I wish everything would freeze solid as a rock again….since it is so nice to be outside and enjoying the fresh, pollen dusted air once again.

Anyhow, here is what my week was like as far as workouts go.I started the week with a sore back and a visit to my chiropractor on Monday and also ended it on Friday with one more visit. Hopefully I will be pain free soon. Not much weight lifting was done this week but I still am quite happy with what I did do in the cardio area.

Sunday: 2 miles of disc golfing

IMG_7368

Monday: rest

Tuesday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, legs, and abs

Wednesday: home: 30 minute recumbent bike and 3 mile evening walk

Thursday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, stretching

Friday: rest

Saturday: 3 mile walk

You all have a fun and safe Easter….try and spend some of it outside if it’s nice in your area.

Spring Is In The Air….

After an uneventful week it was so nice to wake up Saturday morning to 35 degree temperatures and make plans to head outside for a little fresh air. However, I had a list of things I needed to tend to first…..work before play is how it has always been at our house. So we got right on it Saturday morning, all pitching in so we could head outside for some fun.

While I made boiled eggs, chopped dipping veggies for the upcoming week, and started the laundry, my husband gave the pimento cheese spread recipe remake another try. We attempted one but it was not nearly what the one in Tennessee was so we again tried another. Hopefully this one is a winner.

IMG_6964

After this it was time to clean, do a few home repairs, eat some lunch and then we headed outside for that much needed fresh air.

IMG_6965

IMG_6969

We drove to one of our favorite trails once again and decided today would be the wooden adventure route….one we never take in the summer due to tooooo many snakes!!! It was so nice. It was so peaceful with the wind howling through the pine trees up above.

On our way back to the parking area, I was amazed at the number of people out on the bay ice fishing along with numerous snowmobilers. I am not a fan of ice fishing or driving on ice for that matter. Too risky for my liking.

Ok, so let me share with you what I did for exercise this week. It’s more for my sake than yours…..I know, but it keeps me accountable. So here we go…

Sunday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, abs and shoulders on the TRX suspension trainer

Monday: home: abs and upper body weight routine, and 2.5 mile evening walk outside….fresh air was so nice

Tuesday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, abs and legs, stretching

Wednesday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, abs, and stretching

Thursday: rest…..foam rolling

IMG_3043

Friday: home: upper body weight routine and abs

Saturday: 2.5 mile snowy trail hike

You all have a great week as we count down to SPRING!!!!

Writing It Down Helps Me Stay Accountable

After lasts weeks events that I would rather forget than rehash here for you all, I knew I somehow just needed to get to the gym and have a good ole “sweat it out” session in my zone. From Sunday to Thursday it was chaos….literally, not a day went by without some issue that needed attention. By Thursday evening I was on brain overload and just needed to walk away and let everything be what it was meant to be. I told my husband I was going to the gym one way or another and just needed my hour of physical release.

IMG_20151010_120644

After I finished working out, I felt amaaaazzziiinnnggg!!!! I know exercise is my cure all for stress. I just wish there was more time in a day, less chores that needed to be done, and more energy in my body after a long day. Which made me think back when I would write out my weekly workout plan. For some reason, when its written I seem to follow it. When I think it…sometimes things come up and I remember I had intended on exercising but forgot until I was physically done for the day. Maybe it’s like a food journal….when you write down everything you eat sometimes you wonder….wow, did I really need that handful of candy, maybe that extra piece of pizza, and so on.

So, not so much for all of you but more for myself, (since this blog is sort of a  journal of our life that I hope to look back on someday) I have decided to write out my weekly workout plan which I hope will help me stay focused and follow throughout the week.

Sundays is when I plan to post the upcoming weeks plan. Now maybe you will find this inspirational  and maybe you will find this not worth reading at all. However, sometimes we all need to do something for ourselves that we know works and will help keep us on the right track. So I apologize if it is of no interest to you but if it is, I hope you find it inspirational and maybe motivating.

With no further explanation needed…..here is what the week ahead looks like:

Sunday: gym/weights/walk

Monday: off…evening appt. to attend

Tuesday:steps/walk

Wednesday:gym/weights

Thursday:walk

Friday: off

Saturday: gym/steps

My hope is to attend the gym at least three times a week. Although, I will admit, it may be mostly on the weekends. Our gym is under major construction right now and the weekends are much quieter than the weekdays. And don’t forget we are in the middle of training for our trip so we need to fit in mileage and stair climbing also.

Uggg, it simply sounds exhausting but that is exactly why I am writing it down since I know it helps me stay accountable.

Wish me luck….Off to the gym I go

52 Hike Challenge Update/Returning To Work Finally

I finally returned to work full time this week. I was not sure how everyone would return and was prepared for the worst but surprisingly they all returned with smiles. I had the happiest group of kids and that made me feel pretty great. Physically, I had my moments for sure. By evening I was sore but not in what I would call PAIN and no doubt exhausted. One night I was sleeping in the recliner 45 minutes after they all left….wow was I tired.

Tired was the name of the game this week and clearly you can see this in my workouts. However, in my defense, we did play outside many times this week which is also a workout with three kids. So ultimately, I think for the first week back I did ok. Here take a look:

Saturday: 2.5 mile trail hike,

gym: 20 minute elliptical

Sunday: 3 mile trail hike

Monday: 30 minute recumbent bike, arms/legs workout

Tuesday: 1.5 mile walk outside (morning), 2 mile mall walk (evening)

Wednesday: arms and legs workout

Thursday: 30 minute recumbent bike, arms/legs workout, 3 mile morning walk, 1.5 mile evening hike

Friday: rest

With three more hikes added to my list this week I am even closer to accomplishing the 52 hike challenge.

52hikechallengelogo

We are still making progress on our to do list for Spring but I am hoping to add at least one more hike to the log this weekend to get me a little closer to this goal.

Have a great weekend everyone:-)

Getting Back In The Groove

After last week I needed to find my groove again in the workout scene. I was able to reset during the weekend by taking a nice hike with my husband and then felt ready to face the week head on.

I started the week happy to have my shopping completely done, wrapped and ready for Christmas. I felt good that everything that fell apart last week was once again put all back together and ready to go. And I won’t lie, another week of winter with no snow made me one happy camper. Many people complain it’s not Christmas without snow…I disagree. Look around, it’s everywhere. Music, lights, gifts, crazy crowds everywhere….tis the season whether there is snow or not. However, since there is no snow it could be the perfect opportunity to make some new traditions…..maybe go for a family hike/walk on Christmas Eve and after have hot chocolate together. We did this last Christmas Eve and it was the best Christmas Eve I have ever had. Christmas is what you make of it, not what makes Christmas.

Regardless of snow or no snow, we all still should exercise. So now, let’s take a look at the workouts I did this week:

Saturday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, weights and stretching

Sunday: 4.5 mile trail hike

IMG_2991

Monday: rest

Tuesday: home: 15 minute recumbent bike, total body weights

gym: 30 minute elliptical, lower body weights and stretching

Wednesday: home: 30 minute recumbent bike and a 3 mile walk outside

Thursday: home: upper body weights, 3 mile walk outside with my toddlers in the morning….it was so gorgeous for December:)

Our original plan for this evening was a visit to the gym…although with a record high of 54 degrees we opted for another 3 mile walk outside and we adored all the Christmas lights together.

Friday: rest
