Training Update: What A Week Of Activity Looks Like Right Now

Some of you have messaged me asking how training has been going. Well, it started out slow since we originally were scheduled to begin a week prior to when we did due to some family issues. And then when we did begin my husband was sent on the road for work, which we sort of planned to happen since it was inevitable. Although, all in all we are doing the best we can with what we got.

So first, my husband is making his best with what the hotels workout rooms have where he is staying during the week. Then on weekends is when we had planned to do our longer mileage hikes. Which our first one happen to be this past weekend and we decided on two laps of our favorite nearby trail. This totaled just over 6 miles. (Our goal is 9 miles eventually)IMG_1626

During the week, here back at home, my son and I have been meeting up in the evenings two nights a week to start doing hill laps. He hates up and I hate down….so we are both struggling at one point or another. However, so far we are up to 15 laps total with a goal of 30 laps by the end of training. All in all, it’s better than I expected so far. IMG_1360

Then the other two evenings we have been walking shorter distances (3 miles or so) on an area trail together. I just wish the humidity would give a bit and this would make all our outdoor exercise so much more pleasant.

My goal during all this was to also keep going to the gym in the wee hours of the morning for my normal daily routine of weights and elliptical time but so far, one week in, and that has not happened. I am, however, determined to fit it in but until I have my other half home for a normal week of life that will probably not happen. I do try and fit in 30 minutes of morning biking when I have the energy which is easy to fall back on since the bike is here at home. Being solo here at home to do everything is not easy when you add in work, life, and evening workouts.

So to sum things up, here is what our week was like:

Monday: bike 30 minutes in the morning, walk 3 miles in the evening

Tuesday: hill climbing 15 laps

Wednesday:  bike 30 minutes in the morning, walk in the evening 3 miles

Thursday: morning yoga, hill climbing 15 laps

Friday: rest

Saturday: chores/rest

Sunday: hike 6.2 miles

The Unofficial End Of Summer Is Here

The unofficial end of summer is upon us with this being the Labor Day weekend. I am sad but excited all at the same time. We have a FULL fall season right around the corner.

Recapping this week….basically a mess. Strange happenings all week, numerous appointments we needed to attend to, great weather for outside play during the daytime hours, and a surprise two days off for our son means I heard,” hey mom…..plan something quick!” Which I did and can’t wait to share with you all. HINT: It involves hiking boots and waterfalls:-)

So without more jibber jabber….here is what I did fit in this week for exercise and let’s all go enjoy the last big weekend of summer!!!!!

Saturday: gym: 30 minute elliptical and stretching

Sunday:gym: 30 minute elliptical and stretching

Monday: 2.5 mile rail trail walk

IMG_8917

Tuesday: home gym: 30 minute recumbent bike

Wednesday: home gym: 30 minute recumbent bike and legs workout with weights

Thursday: rest

Friday: rest

Have a safe, fun, and exciting weekend.

Crazy….Maybe….Worth It….Totally!!!!

Training for our hiking trip is going quite well. I am finally starting to feel better in the pain department which I am so thankful for. With that in mind, time is always our biggest issue when we need to step things up in the exercise area for vacations but we get in what we can during the week and I typically give it a good go on the weekends. My husband tags along when he can during the week and weekends we typically do something active one day and one day we spend separate since this trip is more my destination than his. Well, maybe they are all more my destination than his but so far he has not been disappointed so I just go with it.

Here is what my week was like:

Saturday: 6.5 mile trail hike with my husband

IMG_9032

Sunday: gym: 30 minute elliptical and total body weights on the Cybex machines

****This is the first weights I have lifted since injuring myself July 4. I have decided to start on the machines which are not my favorite but I feel are more forgiving if my form is off in any way.

Monday: home gym: 30 minutes recumbent bike

commercial gym: 30 minutes elliptical and leg lifting on the Cybex machines, along with a ton of stretching

Tuesday: 3 mile rail trail walk

Wednesday: home gym: 25 minutes recumbent bike, floor mat exercises with very light weights

evening rail trail walk for 3 miles

Thursday: rest

Friday: rest

I am really feeling the effects of age, life, summer….I am not quite sure exactly so call it what you wish. Workouts at the gym are a struggle at best during the week but I have to remember I NEVER used to visit the gym in the summer months two years ago. My job is active and chasing kids all day in the summer heat (pure heaven for me) is a lot of work. However, we have trained for far worse trips in the summer heat…like when we did ooodles of stairs for our trip to Sedona, AZ. These were killers but I was so happy we did them when we arrived and started hiking the area.

As usual I am putting off friends, family, and events to get in what I can in my free time to prepare for this adventure. Some clearly believe this is crazy…..and some few understand its what I love to do. Reaching a destination you think is impossible is the best feeling in the world. And for me, the higher up this destination is the better the feeling of accomplishment is when I reach it.

There is nothing better for me than arriving at the trailhead and seeing this sight… my boys looking up and thinking…..is my mom/wife out of her mind???? And then we begin our hike and eventually reach the top! Priceless and and worth every step I took to get here.

IMG_5677

That’s it for me…our weekend is a bit unorganized at the moment so we’ll all see what plays out when it actually happens. As usual the chore list is always something we could do…..scrub carpets, laundry, cut the lawn and so on, plus I know we have to make a quick trip down to our nearest Trader Joe’s for backpacking food which is no quick trip being its two hours from us. And of course, while we are down there we may just have to make a quick stop in at REI to see what’s on sale. Plus, we have not decided on buying a bear canister yet or winging it and going without. I have been watching the trail condition updates and they are all talking about numerous sighting of bears which is exciting and scary all at the same time. I would love to see one on the trail BUT not searching for food in my backpack!

As usual time will tell and we’ll see what gets done and what we end up doing all in good time.

Anyone have a bear canister to recommend?

Just Couldn’t Get It In Gear This Week

This week was strange having the holiday on a Tuesday. For me it’s much like having two Mondays and let’s face it, no one really likes a Monday. Although, we all make the best of what life dishes out and that is exactly what I did.

After our big hike Saturday I had originally planned on a gym visit Sunday. That is until I woke up and my legs/ankles told me this was not going to happen. So I simply took the entire day off from exercise which is something I never do. Even on my rest days I still find myself doing something active whether that be chasing after kids while playing in the yard, walking to the park or even doing yoga stretches to loosen up. Rest days for me typically are not great, I feel miserable when I stop moving but I know everyone needs a rest day and that is exactly what I did Sunday. All day I rested….I even laid in bed for two hours Sunday afternoon and watched a movie. It has been years since I have seen an entire movie.

Anyhow, here is what a holiday week of exercise turned out to be for me. Clearly, I just could not seem to get it in gear all week long. I would bet we all have these moments and I can only hope next week is a bit better.

Saturday: BIG HIKE…..read about it here if you missed it….9.7 miles whoo hoo!!!

IMG_8468

Sunday: rest day

Monday: morning weights in our home gym, 1.5 mile trail walk

Tuesday: 5 hrs.of kayak paddling…..wonderful, sunny hours;-)

If you missed it read about it here

IMG_8518

Wednesday: 30 minute recumbent bike in our home gym

Thursday: 2.5 mile steamy trail walk…..this was the hottest day all week

Friday: morning weights in our home gym

It seems the first half of the week I rested my sore ankles from the long hike Saturday. And then after paddling for five hours Tuesday I needed to rest my shoulders and arms and did not lift many weights. Although, remember, I do lift kids every day, all day for my job so really I was not resting my upper body much.

Change Is Hard But Sometimes Necessary

Summer may have arrived other places around the world but here in WI it is not feeling a whole lot like summer. It has been so chilly again this week. I can’t even think about water activities without getting a chill and you all know how much time we typically spend in the lakes and rivers around WI. So this week it was once again all about outdoor fun, hiking, and the gym. No water fun at all….uggg!!!! Unless you count playing in all the rain we have had water fun….it’s been quite a bummer of a summer so far!

Here is a look at my week of sanity seeking fun:

Saturday: gym: 30 minute elliptical and weights

3.30 mile hike on a near by campus trail

IMG_8428

IMG_8426

Sunday: disc golf 18 holes

and another 3.30 mile trail hike on the same trail as Saturday

IMG_8381

Monday: morning weight lifting routine in the home gym

gym: 30 minute elliptical and stretching

Tuesday: morning weight lifting routine in the home gym

3.30 mile evening hike on the same campus trail….I am loving the wildlife we see while hiking this trail

IMG_8432

IMG_8435

Wednesday: afternoon weights and 30 minutes on the recumbent bike in our home gym

Thursday: morning weight lifting routine in the home gym and yoga during nap time(hurray for everyone sleeping at the same time!!!)

IMG_1083

Friday: rest

It has been almost three weeks since I have had my last long walk on black top/concrete roads here in our neighborhood and even though I miss what walking offered I am not missing the pain it caused my joints. I never thought I would give up walking but my body was telling me it had had enough and I had to listen. For me change is hard but sometimes necessary to be happy. I will say I am loving the gym even though it is summer time. Maybe my age is changing how I look at life but going to the gym and feeling great instead of going for a walk and aching for hours afterwards is something I am savoring. And clearly, as you see above, I am still technically walking since we have been utilizing our area trails and with the softer ground under my feet I have had no pain at all after a long hike.
