Weekend Happenings….

This is the first weekend all summer we have not had preplanned plans. Which left us wondering, what should we do? We have so many upcoming adventures, that laying low and close to home sounded quite nice to me.

Saturday morning we started by sleeping in until 6am.(Yes, normal wake up time for us is 4am, so 6:00am was very nice.) I did a few chores, worked out, ran a few errands, hubby did some of his “honey do” list, and then we thought it was too beautiful to just sit and waste a sunny day. We checked out the Algoma/ Lake Michigan web cam to see what the big lake looked like, and it was sunny, with a little ripple. Exactly what I have been waiting for all summer. We loaded up the paddle board, packed a quick lunch and we were off to the big lake.

My boys brought kayaks to goof around and practice rolling with and I had my board, who could ask for anything more perfect.

I was so happy to finally have my moment with beautiful blue water, sunny skies and my board.

Meanwhile, my boys were testing out my kayak, to see who could roll it the best. Doesn’t my husband look so concerned standing there with his arms crossed and our son is upside down in my kayak?

No need to fret though, we have all come to know how long each one of us is comfortable being upside down. He was up in seconds. My kayak is the easiest to roll of all of them, so each one was over and back up with no problem.

It was a spectacular day at the beach. Sun, sand and paddling:) Pure Happiness!

Sunday brought a day of tasks we have been wanting to do for some time. With the help of my brother, my husband trimmed dead and hanging branches from our huge tree in the backyard.

We made a visit to the veggie market in Black Creek.

I bought $16.00 worth of veggie happiness!

We came home and immediately lit the grill and started roasting veggies for homemade salsa. Recipe will be posted this week.

What a terrific weekend. A lot of chores were accomplished with a little added fun in between.

Wave Riding Lake Michigan/Stand Up Paddling

Today we woke up to some breezy conditions outside which meant Lake Michigan may or may not be rough. We took a look at the web camera, and oh boy, we could see whitecaps, but my boys were determined to give it a try. I, on the other hand, was hoping for a nice little ripple to finally get the stand up paddle board on the big lake. Upon arrival, I knew the board would never leave the truck.

My son, upon entering the water, debating, shall we or shall we not?

IMG_1560

They have done bigger waves on this lake before, so I knew they were going to go and try it. It’s really a matter of wave spacing. Sometimes it’s perfect and sometimes it’s not.

Getting ready to paddle.

IMG_1563

Ok, let’s go.

After a while of paddling to get far enough out to ride a wave back,

IMG_1576

they figured out today would not be the day for Lake Michigan paddling. So they caught a few good ones and made their way back to shore.

IMG_1577

Then they said it was my turn to get wet. We headed to a near by lake so I could paddle my SUP. Hurray!!!!

Upon arriving, there were a ton of kids and families having picnics and swimming. Summer has finally arrived here.

We took a short paddle around the lake, and then really wanted to try out what we had learned in our recent paddling class. My son went first, and tried his turn. First on his knees.

Then standing, one foot in front of the other.

IMG_1594

This is extremely difficult, as you can see. He went swimming again.

IMG_1595

Then it was my turn. No pics of me, but I assure you, I went swimming three times from the standing position. I have the kneeling position mastered though.

Then my husband tried his handstand again, and this time I actually was out of the water with the camera ready.

Getting in position

And up he went

Very graceful I must say. He even landed it right back on the board, unlike last time when he ended up in the lake. Very nice honey!

After a few hours of paddling and playing. It was picnic time. You will all be so proud of us, we actually utilized a picnic table this time instead of the tailgate of the truck.

So, for a Sunday, it was a fun relaxing day in the little town of Algoma.

Until next time,
