Missing Summer

We are almost to the end of January and about this time every year I find myself really missing summer. Winters in Wisconsin are so long and seem to drag on forever. Shall we relive some summer moments together by looking back at sun filled summer activities? I say YES!

I miss floating on the lake covered in sunscreen and letting the birds fly above my head. (and hoping they don’t poop on me)

IMG_8536

I miss watching my husband catch fish while I paddle my kayak searching for turtles.

IMG_8263

I miss the beauty nature provides us for free.

IMG_9054

I miss camping and sitting around the campfire with good friends while someone else does the cooking.

IMG_7641

I miss seeing the most majestic creatures watch over us from above.

IMG_8730

I miss hitting the trail with my son.

IMG_8145

I miss relaxing on the river as my husband maneuvers us around boulders so I don’t have to get out of my tube.

IMG_9017

I miss finding big beautiful creatures that we literally stumble upon while hiking near the rivers edge.

IMG_9200

I miss sunsets that make you forget all the bad in the world.

IMG_9410

I simply miss feeling alive.

Hag in there….summer is coming…we just have to all hang on a bit longer.

AuTrain Falls-Michigans U.P.

AuTrain Falls was without a doubt my favorite of all the waterfalls we visited while in Michigans U.P.

Why you ask? Well, it was peaceful, had only three people at it when we arrived and they soon left, it was off the beaten path and the falls itself was just a nice slow water flow that brought peace and solitude after a long day of dealing with people waterfall viewing. It was beautiful.

IMG_9176

For this waterfall you will follow a dirt road and come to a gate where there is a parking area for a good number of cars. You will then walk behind the gate and continue down a hill to reach the falls.

IMG_9174

We viewed the waterfall and since we were with our son and his friend whom is also a photographer……we ventured off behind the AuTrain Power building down a trail we saw while they tried to capture the right light or whatever photographers try and capture…haha!

IMG_9218

IMG_9192

Trails are meant to be followed in my opinion so we did exactly this. It led us down along side of a river.

IMG_9217

This river eventually got shallow enough for us to walk on the rocks and explore.

IMG_9210

Until……….one of the boulders we were walking on began to move and we discovered this big guy.

IMG_9201

Oh my goodness, I loved him from first sight. Turtles are so fascinating and since we have one as a pet I had to have a picture. Thankfully, my husband loves them also….or at least he loves me enough to pick up this very strong snapping turtle so I could capture a few photos before we released him back the the river where he happily swam away.

IMG_9200

IMG_9196

IMG_9205

After this we made our way back to the boys who were still trying to capture that perfect shot and I shared my turtle pics with them. As usual, my son was not happy with me since he seems to never be close by when mom and dad stumble upon the coolest things in the wild.

If you visit this waterfall there are no restrooms, no fee and I can only assume in the winter months it will be closed since they may not plow a dirt road….but this I am not sure of.

Time To Catch Up

Warning: Long post ahead:-)

Life has been so crazy that I have been struggling to find time to blog. However, that does not mean I don’t have a ton of stuff to share with you all. So let’s briefly catch up a bit today.

I mentioned back a few weeks that we were headed out to waterfall hike. Well, I have 6 waterfall hikes that need to be written and posted on the hiking trails page and hopefully I will get to them before the snow flies but if not, winter is LONG and that will be something to blog about then. For now, I will tell you we had a magnificent time and while my husband and I ventured off alone leaving the photographers do their thing…we came across one of my favorite reptiles ever. I love turtles…even ones that bite!!!!!

IMG_9201

IMG_9199

IMG_9196

We also had another monthly dinner out with my brother recently and it was his pick on the restaurant so we ended up trying Green Bay’s newest sushi restaurant….Sushi Lover.

IMG_9250

Oh my….I could eat sushi every day…..it was so darn tasty. I loved this place. Everything was made fresh, you can order as many times as you wish, and it is one flat price. My husband and brother can sure pack away their share of sushi…..and I had fun watching them fill themselves to complete fullness from about that half way point of our meal.

IMG_9249

Then we had our first camping trip of the fall season. This time it was only the two of us and it was so relaxing.

IMG_9254

He was in charge of keeping the fire going so I could stay warm.

IMG_9266

I was in charge of meals for the weekend.

IMG_9361

IMG_9273

My only request for the weekend was to relax, go out for our favorite pizza at the new location of our favorite restaurant in the Door County area which is Wild Tomato now open also in Sister Bay, and to go out just once for ice cream before the end of summer. All of which we made happen.

IMG_9344

IMG_9351

IMG_9371

IMG_9362

We used to go out for ice cream all the time….heck, we used to go out for anything all the time…but since going artificial sweetener free for his stomach issues we can’t without causing problems. Although, since getting this all under control, it has gotten easier to go out here and there and he only gets a little stomach upset if we go overboard. Some foods and restaurants we have found are fairly safe for him to eat at…like sushi…..this causes little to no problems at all.

While camping we also got in a small two mile hike which was the highlight of the weekend. I love hiking and it makes me sad to know that very soon the ground will be rock hard and frozen solid for months.

IMG_9277

Then I had a mid week day off of work which I packed way to much stuff into. I had three appointments to attend and a date with my son for lunch at a new restaurant in Green Bay near his work.

IMG_9385

That evening my husband and I walked my favorite nearby trail to discuss the results of one of these appointments in a place I feel peaceful.

IMG_9401

IMG_9410

IMG_9406

There is nothing like a beautiful sunset to reset my mind and make me come to terms with news I don’t like hearing. Although, as with all things, we will move on and deal with what comes our way.

In the food category the fall menu has arrived here in our house. Soups are being made, the last of the fresh veggies are being enjoyed everyday and I am even sneaking in veggies where my husband and son would least expect them. So far no one has complained and they have even asked for more. From salads, to veggies added to pasta sauces for the entire family instead of just myself, and even carrot muffins…..eating clean and healthy is getting to be so much easier.

IMG_9390

IMG_9252

IMG_9377

And lastly, this past weekend I spent with a friend attending a harvest festival in Door County. I was not sure I could pull off another weekend away but when travel plans were set back a bit for my husband I went for it. We had the best time chatting, shopping, and of course eating.

IMG_9415

IMG_9419

That should catch me up to date I believe. Eventually I will get to the details of those beautiful waterfalls but for now I will leave you all with the reminder to get out and enjoy life while it’s still nice. Go hike, enjoy the beautiful fall colors that are starting to appear, and breathe the fresh air……see ya!

Paddling The Chain O Lakes in Waupaca, WI-Summer 2017

We finally made it to my favorite place to paddle…. Waupaca, WI and the Chain O Lakes. Upon waking up Saturday morning we had originally planned to head to Door County.  Although, after watching the weather forecast, I quickly changed my mind and suggested we head to Waupaca. You see, when its hot here in Green Bay then Door County is typically 20 degrees cooler and that would put their temps right about 70-75…..too cold for me to enter the water. And I had my heart set on paddling and doing some lake swimming. I suggested this quick change of plans to my husband and he said….let’s do it! So we did!

IMG_1266

Upon arrival, we were not surprised to see some very large trees down between the chain of lakes since we saw some big trees along the highway while driving. However, everything down and in the path of the lakes is easy to get around in both kayaks, canoes, and standup paddle boards.

IMG_8264

As usual, I go to paddle/swim and my husband never forgets his fishing pole. Three casts in and he caught his first northern pike of the day. It was going to be a good day;-)

IMG_8263

Since we arrived by 9:30 Saturday morning the parking lot was still easily doable and I made my way immediately to the public dock on Marl Lake to get in my swim I was hoping for. Marl is probably my favorite lake here…..it’s crystal clear and has the most turtles which I love. However, the public dock where we beach our kayaks to swim fills up quickly on nice days so I wanted to get this in before it was too busy.

IMG_8269

IMG_8282

IMG_8283

IMG_8284

Next, it was time to make our way back through the water path to another one of the lakes.

IMG_8286

At this point we passed by where we were parked and noticed that the number of people starting to show up had nearly tripled. Wow, they just kept coming and the lot was nearly full with cars, trucks, and trailers.

Making our way through Beasley Creek was once again a pain in the butt as always. We were hoping with the amount of rain we have had in the area lately that there would be enough water to paddle the entire creek but no luck. Although, this time we planned ahead just in case and my husband grabbed a piece of kayak strapping and threw it in his kayak. This way I held his boat, stayed in mine, and he pulled me and his kayak through with little effort.

IMG_8292

I enjoyed the ride and captured a beautiful hawk hiding out in the trees right next to the creek edge.

IMG_8296

Arriving at the next lake in the chain he again caught a fish after a few casts and this time it was a nice bass.

IMG_8297

IMG_8300

Our entire day was a success. No rain, abundant sunshine, warm water, and great fishing. And I even had my first swim of 2017 in a lake…..it was a great way to spend a Saturday.

Geocaching, Picnics, and Trail Hiking

This past weekend we were once again blessed with sunshine and beautiful blue skies one of the two days. So, of course, I knew we needed to plan something outside for fun and exercise. We thought it would be a perfect day to log some miles on two different trails to add to the 52 Hike Challenge I signed up for and also find some geocaches.

We decided to head south to two “new to us” trails. The first was short and offered geocaches only reachable by kayak, which we will be finding when the water warms up a bit. In the meantime we did head out across the bridge and check out the surroundings.

IMG_3884

IMG_3866

We saw a lot of wildlife in this small area enjoying the sunshine as much as we were. IMG_3872

IMG_3878

IMG_3897

After exploring for awhile, we stopped to have a picnic before heading to our main trail of the day.

IMG_3886

Upon arriving at the Wiouwash Trail we were happy to see a small parking area with restrooms provided. This area will fit three-four cars maximum. IMG_3887

IMG_3899

We headed out on a mission to find some geocaches and had no issues what so ever doing so. We are now at #615 found!!!!

IMG_3890

IMG_3902

I was so happy to see green leaves on the trees starting to make their appearance. Summer is coming…….. IMG_3889

We even had our own cheering crowd for a distance. Apparently, they must have recently had a race of some sort on this same trail and someone took paper cores and painted/decorated them and placed them along the trail for a short distance giving a high five with a fork arm attached. They were quite comical .

IMG_3900

It ended up being a great day. Almost 6 miles covered and two new trails discovered. One which we will return to with kayaks and one to finish hiking and searching out more geocaches in the near future.

A Look Back At May And What’s To Come For June

Our first kayaking trip of 2015

IMG_1098

It’s been quite a whirlwind month for us. As for June, it’s even crazier. With a visit to a friends cabin, a weekend garage sale to clear out the growing pile in our basement of things we no longer need/want, kayaking, hopefully standup paddling depending on my ankle, and to the beginning of our training plan for our up coming vacation. Life is looking somewhat overwhelming although, it’s exactly how I like it to be.

Do you fill your summertime calendar with busy, fun activities?

Or are you one to leave the weekends for rest and relaxation?
