A Strange Week That Ended In An Awesome Way

This was a strange week for us here. My husband was missing in action all week and I feel every one of us noticed. Missing one person in the family makes a huge difference…from less laundry, to less food required at meal times, to no one to talk to in the evenings, and no one to wake up to in the morning. Like anything in life, some things are good and some are not so good…. in this situation we adapt, overcome, and move on.

So being I was on my own all week, I could do what I wanted when I wanted to do it. I returned to the gym, started Christmas shopping, enjoyed the exceptionally warm weather we are experiencing here in WI, and caught up on some reading. I made some great progress on the to do list for fall and made meals that would make my husband cringe.

Here is what my workouts consisted of this week.

Sunday: 3 mile walk

Monday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, stretching

Tuesday: 30 minutes on the recumbent bike, floor weights routine, stretching, 5 mile evening walk with a friend

Wednesday: 3 mile evening walk with a friend….this was suppose to be gym night but with temps so wonderful here yet, why would I go to the gym when I can spend it outside and not shiver in November…..so awesome!

Thursday: rest

Friday: floor weights routine

Saturday: off…..however, we did tons on walking while on our shopping trip.

Which brings me to the ending of our week. Saturday my husband and I took our annual shopping trip to a mall in Illinois. It’s our day to spend whatever we wish on just us….and this year was a blast. We found some awesome deals, ate at our favorite place, and enjoyed the day. And the best part is that we take a coach bus so we never have to worry about traffic, parking or being too tired to drive back home at the end of a long day. I can’t wait until next year.

Here are a few pics from our trip.

Where To Next?

You may be wondering why we did not reschedule our rock scrambling vacation. I know everyone else is because they have all asked that exact question. To be honest, we just could not make it what it would have originally been if we would have rescheduled. Which for me would have been even more of a disappointment. Our hiking guides were booked up, many plans at home would have needed to be rescheduled, and I am self employed and taking vacation days or switching them up last minute is not something I like to do to the families I offer daycare to every day. Cancelling was our best option right now, BUT it did not take me long to schedule our next adventure:) It’s already done!

However, this is going to be a little more than our typical vacation. Yes, we plan to hike, swim, fish, explore and spend time as a family. We also plan to research homes, communities, and check out the general public areas of our next destination. Why? Well let’s put it this way, very soon I will hopefully be able to bid a fine farewell to the state of Wisconsin. It’s time to find my happy place and this my friends is the first step in that direction.

We have a destination in mind but until we actually go and spend some quality time there we will not be sure. And we could not think of a better way to do this than to vacation in the area. We will be moving around every two days to a different location, which will be a hassle but worth it in the end. So far, I will say from talking with people in this area while making these plans I am completely and totally impressed. I know they are in the hospitality business and they are paid to be friendly, however, so are the people here in Wisconsin and friendly is very hard to find here in my opinion.

As for now we will be waiting patiently for Spring to arrive. I have some researching to do in regards to either snake boots or snake gators for this trip(I can’t believe I just said that), and I am really considering a new backpacking backpack. I have a fantastic small pack, a great large pack, but I could really use a mid range pack. Can you see a trip to Milwaukee’s REI coming up soon? Because I can:) Now, to persuade my husband to drive is the next battle. Although, he is pretty easily swayed so I am not too worried.

Does anyone have advice for snake gators/boots? I could really use some insight if you care to share.

Any recommendations on backpacking packs?

Unexplained Changes

I have been noticing many changes lately and I am really trying hard to decipher them. Nothing really urgent, important, or honestly even meaningful just some odd changes. Maybe it winter, maybe it’s aging, or maybe it’s just being female.

Let’s see, this weekend I actually had my husband home both Saturday and Sunday and we had plans to start packing. When we traveled in my younger years I would be so organized, packed way earlier than need be, and be completely stressed that we would forget something. Now, not so much! I have a list, that is still normal, but nothing on that list made it into our suitcases as of yet. Why? Well, because I just do not feel like packing. Pretty sad but true. Although, eventually I will just have to do it I suppose.

Another odd thing happened this weekend when we needed to run a quick errand to a hardware store. We passed right by my favorite sporting good store in Green Bay. Knowing that I still had a gift card from Christmas, my husband said,” why don’t we stop and maybe you could find something special on sale.” (There were clearance banners hanging outside the store) Now, normally I would be all for a clearance sale, especially at a sporting goods store. However, I simply said no. He looked at me and said, “are you sure, they are having a clearance sale?” I again said, “no.” I just did not feel like shopping. Where in the world did that come from? I am a clearance only shopper. This is my favorite store. What the heck????

Let’s talk about that quick errand we were running at the hardware store. Our son approached us with a little remodeling project he wanted to do in his “Man Cave” and since it’s our house he knew he could not attempt this without getting the go ahead from us first. Now normally remodeling sends me over the edge. I don’t like change when it comes to my house. I am very organized, I know where everything is, and if you leave it lay around and I find it, don’t ever plan to see it again. That is what 20+ years of being a wife and mother has taught me. I only ask once for you to pick it up after that it is mine to do what I wish with it:) Anyhow, when he asked, I calmly asked for a plan of what he was thinking. I did not like his entire plan but was willing to work with it a bit. So with dad’s help this is what we did Saturday. About half way through the process, I was happy to leave it up to the guys and went upstairs to tend to some other projects I needed to get done. Again, normally this would NEVER happen. I would see it through to the end and make sure everything was put back where it belongs. This time however, I really did not care. My things that needed to be moved were put back where I could easily access them and they seemed to have it together so I left. I think they were even shocked.

One last thing that caught me off guard recently and I was not sure what to even say so I simply bit my tongue and did not say a word. Which for me is not normal!!!! I speak my mind and I don’t ever sugar coat anything. An acquaintance of ours recently went to the doctor and stated to me that their doctor mentioned that he/she was disappointed in this persons weight. In turn our acquaintance then says to me that they really felt bad because their doctor really seemed disappointed in them so they have decided to lose 40 lbs.. What??????? WHY……. WHY on earth would you loose 40 lbs. for your doctor to be happy with you??? OMG, I wanted to scream at them……but I didn’t:) I bit my tongue HARD! Take it from someone that has lost a lot of weight in the past. You cannot loose weight for someone else to be happy, it will not work! You need to lose weight for your own happiness. Again, why did I not speak up? I would have in the past.

So you see, something is happening to me. Although, somethings that are changing are not so bad, others are just odd. As strange as it is, I think I am ok with these changes.

Have you notice any strange changes in yourself that are similar to what I have experienced? Or am I just odd?

Farewell February…. March…..Oh,How Long I have Waited For You

February 28…I know we still have a pretty thick snow cover outside, I am also sure we have more coming but I will gladly flip my calendar tomorrow to March with a smile on my face.

I can’t explain why, but winter for me is officially over in March. I know technically Spring does arrive in March, but that’s not it. In my eyes, I have made it through the worse, December, January and February. March is when the snow cover really starts to melt. By the end of the month I can usually see the edges of my lawn, daylight savings time begins again and we start planning some of our Spring/Summer outings.

We always have such a busy month, with my birthday at the beginning of the month, my brother’s birthday in the middle and my hubby’s at the end it’s like a month of celebrations.  We never have any big parties or anything but just a simple dinner is exciting when you’ve been enclosed inside for months due to one of the harshest winters we have had in a long time.

We will be attending our favorite kayaking convention real soon. We have a great Easter celebration planned for April traveling to some gorgeous waterfalls. We have started our list of hikes we want to take this summer. We have already planned a few camping trips, and can’t wait until the ice on area rivers melt. Just get me out, let me breathe fresh air, see people and enjoy nature.

Travel and Exercise/ Get Up and Move Update

Whether you travel for business or pleasure, getting in your daily workout is possible regardless of where you will be or what you will be staying in.

Granted, hotels are probably the easiest place to get in a workout since many of them offer a workout room/area, but what do you do if you are not in a hotel with this option? Here are some helpful ideas that you could consider.

Depending on where you are located when you travel many cities have gyms that will offer a daily drop in fee for travelers. It does not hurt to ask.

You could also consider rentals, such as in Door County,WI there are numerous places to rent bikes and kayaks for a reasonable price.

When my husband travels for business, he will often save room for his yoga mat and throw in a dvd to practice yoga in his room before breakfast. It does not take up a lot of room and really could even be done without a mat if you wish. I found yoga very helpful when we traveled to Utah and did this every morning before meeting for the day to start hiking with our group.

You could get in your strength training also without even leaving your room. Purchasing a set of resistance bands is perfect to throw into your luggage. Compact, light weight and easy to use.

If you have access to a car while traveling, finding a local high school may offer a track to run on. You could also find a nature trail to run on if you prefer running with a view. And if nothing else is possible, just take a walk near your hotel. You can walk just about anywhere.

When we travel, I am someone that really needs to be able to get some kind of true exercise in no matter what. It truly just makes me a happier person. So, I will normally research the area we will be visiting and see what there is to offer.  I can normally have my workout done before my boys are even up and ready to go, so it never interferes with our plans of the day.

Don’t let travel be an excuse not to get in a good workout.

And now for my first update of the GET UP AND MOVE CHALLENGE:

(for this first update I am going to start on Monday Dec. 30 simply because it will be easier to post weekly updates for me every Monday)

Monday 12/30: 45 minutes cardio, 30 minutes strength training, 15 minutes abs

Tuesday 12/31: 15 minutes abs and strength training, 1 mile walk

Wednesday 1/1: 30 minutes arc trainer, 15 minute treadmill, 30 minute strength training(all at the gym)

Thursday 1/2: 25 minutes recumbent bike, 10 minutes strength training, 3 mile walk

Friday 1/3: off

Saturday1/4: 30 minutes cardio and 30 minutes upper body strength training (all at the gym)

Sunday 1/5: 20 minutes cardio on the arc trainer and 15 minute walk on the treadmill (all at the gym)

I was pretty proud of myself Sunday. I laid on the heating pad for most of the morning and finally forced myself to just get up and go to the gym. I have been nursing a sore back for three days, and Sunday  was the worse day. I did not feel worse after exercise but no better either. Although,I was happy I made myself go to the gym. No one said everyday was going to be great, but I did it and I was happy I did.

How did you all do on your GET UP AND MOVE goal?
