A Look Back At June 2015 In Pictures

As you all know from reading, this month has been very discouraging for me and my family. However, we have still been finding time to get out and enjoy the summer weather. Here is a look back at June 2015 in pictures.

I hope you enjoyed looking back with me through our June events. I have high hope that July brings better health to my husband and that we can get back to the life we are used to living. We miss paddling our rivers with our whitewater kayaks more than you could all imagine. That being said, I sure am not minding the extra time I have been getting on my standup paddle board while he does water therapy for his back pain. Who needs a pool when you live near so many lakes…..water therapy can be done anywhere and that is exactly what we have been doing.

My Top 10 Summer Essentials

Let’s talk about summer and some of the things I could never do without during these few months. Here in WI summer really only last about 3 months, sometimes a little more or less but for the most part 3 solid months. For me, I take advantage of every second. During these three months I have consolidated a list of my top 10 summer essentials. Let’s see how your summer essentials compare to mine.

#1 Sunscreen: I have finally found a favorite and I am sticking to it. It smells nice, actually does what sunscreen is suppose to do which is protect from sunburn, and does not feel like you are applying Elmer’s school glue to your body.

IMG_1252

#2 Fresh Veggies: From farmers markets, to road side veggie stands, to just stepping out in the backyard to pick our own, I cannot get enough fresh veggies.

IMG_2394

#3 Outdoor Exercise: Why anyone would go to a gym during the summer months to workout is beyond me. Use your imagination and get in a good sweat outside doing something fun.

#4 Ice Cream: This is my favorite summer time treat. I would never turn down the offer to go out for ice cream.

IMG_2557

#5 Greecie Girl Headbands: Love, love, love these headbands. I wear these all year but would never exercise without them in the summer for sure. They stay where I put them, never slip, and can hold up to every activity I do. I have worn them on the river, trail, and at the gym. They come in a variety of great colors and patterns which is always a fun way to spice up any workout. Check them out here http://greeciegirlheadbands.com/

IMG_1242

#6 Vitalyte: We are an active family and replacement fluids are a big part of our summer. We go through gallons or Gatorade and Vitalyte.

IMG_1246

#7 Nalgene Cozy: Nothing drives me crazier than a sweaty water bottle that leaves puddles everywhere I set it down. Since I take my Nalgene water bottle everywhere with me I splurged on a Nalgene cozy with no regrets.

IMG_1249

#8 Clotheslines: Nothing says summer like fresh hung laundry and bedding.

IMG_1251

#9 Cool Summer Salads and Sushi: The last thing I want to do after spending the day outside is come in and prepare a hot dinner. So summer salads and sushi is rotated quite often on our weekly menu.

#10 Our Kayaks: You all knew this one would be on the list, right? None of us could live without our kayaks and some paddling fun.

Ok, So I Am Starting To Go A Little Crazy!

I almost have two weeks into this ankle immobilization and it’s starting to make me a little crazy. Not so much with the actual boot itself, honestly I kinda like wearing it. I am not on guard as much about someone bumping into it with the boot on. That being said, I am tired of sitting…..really tired of sitting. This toes over nose thing is getting to me.

Last weekend, I sat in the truck at a boat launch waiting for my son and husband while they paddled a near by river with their kayaks. Total bummer!

IMG_0705

Then I came home and I sat on a chair talking with my husband as he worked in the garage. After this became boring, I grabbed my kindle and finished a book I had started while sitting on the porch outside. I did get up to make dinner…..thank goodness we need to eat. Then I again, sat on the porch outside to eat my dinner. After dinner it started to get cool outside so I came in and crashed on the couch, leg propped, and watch some television…..another total bummer. I swear I can feel my derriere expanding by the hour from lack of activity. Although so far, I have kept it together and not exploded with frustration…. yet.

As for the good things that have happened recently, there are a few. I hung my first few loads of laundry outside this year. I love fresh hung laundry! We ate our first meals of the year on the front porch again.

IMG_0717

We slept one night without having to turn the furnace back on. Our temps all week have been gorgeous so open windows during the day and fresh air have been the best! Our landscaping is all done, which officially finishes the list of chores to do before we can enjoy summer. However, I don’t think getting into a kayak with this anchor on my foot is a good idea. And I have my first tan line of the summer. Take a guess where…..right where that boot meets my knee. Can you imagine what my legs will look like in another two weeks? One will be nicely tan and the other will be completely white! A fabulous thought that is.

Anyhow, a few hours from now another weekend will be upon us. Obviously, nothing too exciting here is planned but I sure hope you all find something fun to do.

Getting Life Under Control…..For The Moment

It’s no secret that we all feel a little overwhelmed some days. Two weeks ago, I wondered if I would ever get the hang of two infants and a preschooler again, but it’s starting to come together nicely. I can’t say we have a schedule but at least a routine for now. Yes, some days we are completely thrown off but for the most part we have all found our happy place. That’s not to say my family is not having to help more. Not so much with the kids but with life in general. More specifically, meal time after they all go home for the day.

Preparation of meals have been shared more and more by everyone instead of just me being the cook. Even our son has been taking one night a week and preparing dinner…..and we have been actually enjoying his creations. (Typically he eats things I would never even consider eating) My husband has been making use of the grill at least once if not twice during the week. And I will admit, sushi has been picked up and brought home more often than usual lately. Having help with meal times alone makes a world of difference in my life after a long day of work.

IMG_0310

I recently found myself taking an entire morning this past weekend preparing a bunch of things I could prepare and freeze for quick meals or for my husband’s lunch. I made two loaves of banana bread, enjoying one now and freezing one for later. I made a huge batch of calico beans, chili John’s chili, and a pan of lasagna all to freeze in single serving glass dishes. This is a life saver for quick healthy meals when there simply is not enough time.

IMG_2651

I am looking into possibly trying some crock pot breakfast ideas that cook while your sleeping. How super cool is that? Although, I have not given any of these a try quite yet. With my new workout routine so very early in the morning, I can see how this would really be an easy and quick option. I will let you know how this goes when I eventually get around to giving it a try.

What’s For Dinner?

Guess what? We found our grill way back in the garage buried in the corner. My better half said he would stand outside and freeze to make his better half happy by cooking dinner a few times this week. Whoooooo Hooooo! Can you see how very happy this makes me:) So here we go, a little taste of what our meal plan for the week looks like here.

Sunday: grilled salmon burgers, sauteed zucchini, mushrooms, and onions with garlic couscous

Monday: grilled chicken and steak fajitas with all the fixings

Tuesday: crock pot scalloped potatoes and ham

Wednesday: sushi

IMG_0310

Thursday: grilled BBQ chicken thighs, roasted broccoli and farro

Friday: organic beef meatloaf, mashed potatoes and side salads

Saturday: make it yourself or starve:)

As always, if you see something that sounds good and you would like the recipe, comment or email me at rednatural1973@gmail.com and I will be happy to share it with you.

Happy Thanksgiving/ Recap Of November

I can’t believe November is almost over. However, I can only hope that the rest of the winter goes as fast as this month did.

So much has happened this month. First, I  joined my first aqua zumba class and was amazed at the easiness of the class. I often think I could be in better shape, workout more, and so on(who doesn’t, right), but after taking this class I feel I am doing pretty well for myself.

Then, about mid month my husband and I started our training plan to prepare for our hiking/rock scrambling vacation coming up. This is actually something I find motivating and often gives me the extra push I need when I am just not feeling “it”!!! I really like to exercise, it gives me such a great feeling. But when we are specifically training with a goal in mind, that extra bit that I push myself is just so rewarding. It’s almost become a passion to always have a goal to reach when it comes to my physical performance.

Ohhhh, I can’t forget the shopping trip that I more or less begged my husband to accompany me on just so I would not have to lug my own packages all day long. I have done this trip before alone and it is miserable. He surprised me and proved me wrong by actually really enjoying this trip. (Or at least he said he enjoyed it) I did not carry a package all day, we shopped for 7 hours and really had a great time. We’ll see how much he really enjoyed it next year, when I ask again if he will offer his package carrying services:-)

While we were in the Chicago area we made plans to stop in and eat at Whole Foods. I wish we had one in Green Bay but if we did I would probably never eat at home then. I have been wanting to try sushi for awhile now and finally made it happen. Oh man, I am so addicted that I have even started adding it to our weekly menu plan here at home. It is so delicious that I regret waiting so long to try it.

In the job area of my life, we have officially transitioned over to all indoor play. Art projects are a daily activity, indoor toddler tumbling/yoga and gymnastics on our homemade balance beam are being enjoyed.

IMG_0196

Even our son has been contributing to the fun (and the mess) with some science experimenting.

IMG_0279

Another exciting thing that I was asked to do this month was give a major haircut to one of our son’s friends. I have been cutting both my husband and son’s hair for 20 years along with a few friends thrown in here and there. So being asked to do this for him was quite the honor. First, I couldn’t believe he was actually going to cut it all off. Although, when he arrived as planned he seemed pretty sure of this major event.

Here he is with a full head of hair.

IMG_0333

And here he is after.

IMG_0343

It was pretty amazing!!!!

I would have to say it’s been an amazing month but the best thing that has happened this month for me is that my husband has decided for the first time in our 21 years of marriage not to deer hunt. I am not anti hunting in any way but this is one part of our marriage I wish I could just skip over every year. When he announced that he was debating giving it up I was so happy. Hunting, guns and other individuals with guns scare me. Knowing he will not be sitting in the woods with a firearm will make me rest easy.

On that note, I plan to enjoy some family time tomorrow and hope you all do the same with your families:)
