Eating Our Way Through Port Washington, WI….Downtown Historic District

On our 24 hour escape from Green Bay to Port Washington, Wisconsin’s Historic District we ate at three restaurants all on Franklin Street. (you can read part one of this trip here)

IMG_0590Since our whole goal was to walk everywhere this was the perfect location. Our hotel was located at one end of this street with shoppes, restaurants, and other businesses peppered in between.

This made getting around super easy. Our first stop was lunch on Saturday at the Schooner Bar and Grill. We are normally not bar and grill goers but the sign our front had some yummy things listed so we went for it. We were immediately greeted and told if we wanted a good view to head up to the upstairs room where we could enjoy lunch over looking the harbor. Well, yes, no more needed to be said, we headed upstairs. And wow what a great room…all windows, the roof opens when its warm enough, and you can see everything. Awesome!

Service was friendly, view was wonderful, but how was the food? Well, the menu is small, but variety is there….and remember, it’s a bar before it’s a grill so keep this in mind when choosing this establishment. Anyhow, we each had sandwiches….mine was the grilled chicken and my husband had the smoked brisket. And both were wonderful. Super tasty, cooked perfectly, and very filling. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great sandwich.

Dinner brought us a bit further down Franklin Street to the Wicked Grill which also had a sign out front that I saw earlier in the day that said…… can you imagine reuben eggrolls??? Oh yes I can imagine…..and as you can guess, I am already working on remaking these myself at home.

We arrived, were once again greeted ,and seated in the back where meals are served. IMG_0629

We began with margaritas and the sampler platter. Yes, we walked for miles and we were starving. Plus, we walked here so we could each finish the evening with a drink.

IMG_0636

I will confess, I ate all but one half of those two whole egg rolls….I only let my husband have 1/2 of one. He did get all the cheese curds though….that’s fair…right? Whom ever came up with stuffing an egg roll wrapper with reuben fillings should be the employee of the year since they were by far the best thing I ate in forever. My entree here was the pulled pork BBQ salad and this was also superb. I would return here without a doubt next time I am in the area. It was all fabulous.

Then Sunday morning we awoke to catch the sunrise over Lake Michigan before heading back down Franklin Street for breakfast. IMG_0640

IMG_0646

We saw the night before a place called  Daily Baking Co and it opened at 6a.m. on Sundays so this was one of only a few places we could get breakfast.

IMG_0654

We arrived chilly from being outside in the brisk morning winds and immediately ordered coffee and a breakfast sandwich each. Everything we ordered was once again wonderful.

IMG_0661

And then we sat down in the nicely decorated coffee shop and enjoyed the scents of fresh bakes goodies coming from the kitchen.

After this we took one more cold chilly walk around the harbor area before heading home and back to reality. As for the eats in this part of town, I really can’t say anything bad about any of the places we chose to enjoy a meal while we escaped for 24 hours. They were all wonderful for their own reasons….especially those egg rolls!!!!

I walked out on this pier not 12 hrs prior to this…..what a change a few hours can make. If I had waited until today I would have been wet and cold!

Rail Trails…..Boring But Convenient

For me it was a pretty uneventful week. Nothing too exciting happened. My daycare children were fairly well behaved and in good moods all week and exercise was good. I avoided weights until mid week and cut back on poundage since I believe (hope) I have a pulled muscle in my stomach/abdominal area. For now I am going with this conclusion and hoping for the best.

On the home front, meals were good. I even had some time to prepare some freezer meals for fast “on the go” lunches for my husband during the week days when I cop out on making dinner the night before. Typically, he takes left overs for his lunch but sometimes life happens and there are no leftovers. And previously everything I had prepared for freezer meals all had artificial sweetener of some sort in it so I needed to remake his favorites with new ingredients. No Boil Lasagna is one that feeds us all for dinner, leaves me enough for lunch for all the kiddos the next day, plus leaves me two to three servings to freeze. How is that for awesome?!

IMG_8566

OK so here is what I did for exercise this week:

Saturday: gym workout…30 minutes elliptical and stretching

Sunday: rest

Monday: 3 mile trail walk

IMG_8597

Tuesday: 3 mile trail walk

IMG_8591

Wednesday: morning weight routine in our home gym and a evening 3 mile trail walk

IMG_8598

Thursday: 3 mile trail walk once again

Friday: rest

As you can see walking a nearby rail trail was mainly the name of the game this week. Rail trails offer mainly a straight, flat trail but being close to home and convenient is nice after a long day. It’s been hot, humid, and I have been happy. A friend of mine simply calls it “Karen hot”  and I can completely understand why. I just love it….

And on that note I will leave you with something that some people will never see. I rarely see sunsets since I am often in bed and sound asleep before its even dark outside but some individuals never see sunrise like I do every single morning. You have no idea what you are all missing.

What a great way to start a day!

Primitive Camping Actually Means Four Wheel Drive Camping

When I booked our campsite for our weekend near Interstate State Park I knew I wanted a site away from all the action, the entrance, and the shower house. Plus, I needed a site that could accommodate three tents since their were five people in our party. Typically, campgrounds do not let three tents on one site plus two vehicles but this campground had a sight away from all the action and big enough for us all. Perfect…..right? The lady said it was a quiet site and primitive…..she forgot to mention that we would need a vehicle capable of making it to the site. Thankfully, we did not have our Honda Civic for this trip since that would have been even funnier than it already was.

IMG_7753

We arrived mid afternoon and began setting up immediately. Three tents up, gathering wood for campfires, and organizing camp.

IMG_7626

IMG_7629

I then left to find the nearest bathroom since the middle of the night was not that far off. Needless to say, it was quite a distance to walk at 2a.m. in bear country, so I knew if need be it would be a quick trip to the nearest tree. Life goes on…I did ask for primitive.

IMG_7630

After camp was set the guys were all itching to get in some fishing. So after a quick lesson for one of our friends on how to tie fishing lure knots, we headed to the river.

IMG_7631

I wandered around the park we found while the guys tried fishing. However, it did not take long to see that the fish were not biting here so we headed back to camp for dinner and a campfire. Our son taught our friend how to light a campfire with flint and steel which is always fun. Some succeed and some do not….he did very well.

IMG_7641

Saturday morning I climbed out of my tent to see this beautiful sunrise before we visited Interstate State Park both in WI and MN to hike. You can read more about that adventure here.

IMG_7644

After a day of hiking and fishing at the parks we headed back to camp once again to clean and prepare their catch.

IMG_7748

For those of us that were not into the “cave man” type of eating…..roasted fish on a stick (that would be me) they also made some fillets. All while I threw together a quick cheesy taco casserole.

IMG_7751

IMG_7752

And just as I watched the sun rise on the day I also watched it set feeling like we had a pretty fun day.
