A Father’s Day Paddle

There were no gifts exchanged in our home for Father’s Day. My husband’s wish for today was a great paddle down our favorite river, and he received just that.

Mother nature cooperated perfectly, blessing us with beautiful blue skies all day.

We even had the pleasure of introducing my husband’s work partner to the river we wanted to a week ago, but had to go else where because of high water levels. This is always exciting for us. Either they love it and try everything or they hate it and never return. He was very willing to try just about everything. From sliding down the big rock using my kayak, because it was just safer than his for this stunt.

To getting his first surfing lesson. Instructions coming from our son, and the rescue boat being my husband. (I was just the picture person)

Then it was boogie board time. This was the first time this year in the water playing. Temps had finally warmed up to tolerable, and it was terrific.

We ended the day with a smiling kayaker, which for us means success.

Then it was time for our tailgate Father’s Day dinner and the very tired drive home.

Hope you all had a great Father’s Day!

We have come a long way…

This weekend we decided to paddle a river that we have not been on for the past three years. Our original plan needed to be changed because of high water levels due to the amount of rain fall we received this past week. We had a friend along that just bought his first kayak and had very little experience, so a roaring river was not what we were looking for at all.

We started this 8 mile paddle with the sun shining and blue skies above. This is the same river we all started on along time ago. It has a few ripples and alot of curves, and some good current at times. I can remember this being a challenge, and after today, all three of us were so amazed at how far we have come. Although, it was great for the rookie. We would have done anything for a rapid to paddle over, but in time we will get him there, I think. He seemed to really enjoy his new kayak.

While paddling we sometimes will bring along a water frisbee, to add a little excitement. Today, I actually remembered it and it added to the fun. When the waters were calm, we tossed it around some, and even shared a few splashes, of some VERY cold water.

About half way down we stopped at a park where we got out stretched our legs some, and had a snack. Cliff bars for everyone, a drink to rehydrate, and some yummy venison jerky was shared between the guys. My son and husband were in heaven, they don’t get a whole lot of red meat at home, so it was a nice treat.

After snack time, we continued on to the last stretch  of river, which is somewhat faster. It only took us about an hour to finish and then it was time to change, pack up and share a meal on our weekend dining room table together. The tailgate of a truck. We sometimes love the comments we get from some of the new people we have taken with us in the past. Although, he did not seem to mind, even if it happened to be his truck tailgate we used. Our meal this weekend consisted of cold rotisserie chicken, tortilla shells, lettuce, cheese, and sweet red pepper sauce or salsa. Some fresh pineapple, pita crackers, peanuts, chocolate bar to share for dessert, and drinks. Oh, and don’t for get the bear meat sticks our friend shared. Yes, again my husband and son were very happy.

I have heard my husband talk about all the hunting his friend does, and I am not a very brave person when it comes to wild game. So, I stuck to what I knew I was eating and left them all enjoy their treats.

I must say, it was a nice, sunny paddle, with very little adventure. We never know if someone new will return or not. Now we just wait and see what happens. Hopefully he joins us again, and we will take him to a river where he will really have some fun.

Until next time….

Happy Paddling:)

Another day of paddling and another pair of lost sunglasses…

Today was another day of paddling, just not as high adventure as yesterday. I finally got to take my new stand up paddle board out in a near by lake that we enjoy occasionally. Small lakes are not usually our first pick of bodies of water, but at this time of year, it is much warmer than Lake Michigan, which is where we would prefer to stand up paddle. So, my son and husband had the recreational kayaks to fish from, and I had my new board.

When we exited the truck upon arrival, we all sort of took a deep breath, because this lake is located near Lake Michigan, and the air temperature, compared to when we left home was already quite cooler. I knew this would not be great, even with the sun shining but I was determined to enjoy my new board. I paddled first while the boys ventured off to fish.I was not nearly as shaky as the test run I took before purchasing it. It felt quite natural to tell the truth. I absolutely love it!!!!

After I was done, it was my husband turn. He took a tour of the lake on the search for fish, but did find much.

Then is was my son’s turn. If you recall a past post when we went test driving the boards, he did not try one out. He was in charge of pictures, and besides, the river we had to test them out on is not a great river to fall into. He opted out, and took our word for it which board was the one we wanted. So, this was his first time on a board since last summer. He was somewhat shaky at first, but after he found his happy feet spot, he was off paddling like he was a pro. That is until he was coming into the beach area to end his trip. He flip the paddle to lay it on the board and hit his sunglasses and in they went. Right to the bottom of the lake.

We usually loose one pair of sunglasses every year to a river or lake. I guess this year we are stating off quite early.

After boarding and fishing, we had a picnic lunch and decided to pack it all up and head home. I ate lunch with three shirts on and wrapped in a beach towel, I was so cold. Can you imagine if I was wet? Oh my, I don’t even want to think about being that chilly. So, we knew there was no hope of me going back for another paddle, at least not today.

Since I had been delaying grocery shopping because I knew we were going to be out most of the weekend, we did not have a whole lot of choices for dinner. So, we called it a night, found the take out menu for a local restaurant, made some margaritas, and relaxed on the front porch together in the sunshine.

We now have one day left of our long weekend. The first thing on the agenda early tomorrow morning will be grocery shopping. Then who knows. Maybe disc golf, maybe a hike or geocaching or maybe even some tennis. We’ll see what unfolds tomorrow.

I hope your all having a a great weekend so far.

My Belated Birthday

It has been a terrific weekend. Saturday I awoke to my first hibiscus bloom of the season, which always brings a smile to my face. They are just so colorful, and remind me of summer.

Friday night we took a quick trip back to the nursery to pick out our second round of flowering plants for the planter out front, being that the first ones died and I have no idea why????? Then Saturday morning, I quickly planted them.

After a few errands, planting the rest of the garden plants, my son cutting the lawn and my husband trying to catch up on his” HONEY DO” list from being gone the past week, I came inside and secretly called the local kayak/sup store here where we live to see how the water conditions were for trying out my birthday gift, my new stand up paddle board.I was very happy to here the river was calm, and I could come anytime. Well, I was so excited, I went out announced we were going test driving, and we were off.

When we arrived they were actually having a kayak demo day, which I was unaware of, so there were lots of people there. I had done my research and had paddled a board a few times before and knew what I was looking for, but I wanted to try two of them. They were happy to set me up with these two paddle boards on the rivers edge. I took the one I thought I would like first and my husband took the other board out with me.(Our son was in charge of taking pictures) For the first time this year, I was a little shaky at first, but I got it pretty quick. You have to remember, our water here is still very cold, so, falling in was not on the top of my list of things to do. So I was nervous, to say the least. I knew within 10 strokes of the paddle, I loved it. So, we went a little further, and turned back to switch boards.

My second board was not so great. I also knew within 10 paddle strokes, this was not my board of choice. I dropped to my knees and paddled back, rather than go swimming in the ice cold water.

To my surprise, my husband agreed, the BIC Sport ACE-TEC was the one. We have learned from past experience with our kayaks, that we don’t buy anything till we can take it on the water and try it. It may look pretty and feel good on land, but until it’s floating, there is no deal for me. Water changes everything!!!!!!!

The deal was done in my mind. I had my 40th. birthday gift finally picked out, now all I needed was to pay, load it up and the rest was up to my husband. He is in charge of making a rack to store it.

I am so excited to paddle this on local lakes, especially Lake Michigan when its calm, sunny and gorgeous. My husband and son can fish for the” BIG ONE” and I can paddle until they are done.

QUESTION: Have you ever wanted to try stand up paddle boarding?
