Happy New Year…..First, Let’s Catch Up On The Last Two Weeks

I feel it’s important to catch up on the events of these past two weeks. With me being self employed, I had kids here and there through most of the past few weeks. And now, with the new year upon us, everyone is back to normal schedule, my husband is back to normal schedule, and I am looking forward to getting our routine back.

As most of us have done, we had family and friends to celebrate with but we keep things pretty low key here and that is how I like it. We hosted two gatherings, opened gifts, and had a very nice time chatting and catching up with family. From homemade gifts to fabulous food, we all enjoyed the holidays and the time we spent together.

In between parties, I lived in my pj’s and just enjoyed the down time I had.

That is not to say I did not exercise though. I am not going to lie and say it thrills me to death to see all the new people at my gym working on new years resolutions because in all honesty it’s a bit frustrating. However, I know from past years a small few will hang on past a few weeks and it’s just something I have to live with until it thins out a bit. That being said, I do hope all the newbies find health happiness and keep up the good work. It’s a hard step to take and once your past the front door why not keep going. It only gets better from there.

Let’s see…..in case your wondering my outdoor life has been pretty scarce for quite some time already. We have plenty of snow in my opinion…..ok, maybe in my opinion we have too much snow already. And the worse part is I know there is still so much left to come. So outdoor adventure for me is simply not happening anytime soon.

During our few weeks off, we did celebrate something other than Christmas and New Years….our son had his 23rd birthday. Yes, he was almost a Christmas baby but I kept my legs crossed for this not to happen…..and thankfully he was born 8 hours later. So every year he gets a few gifts wrapped in birthday paper to make sure his birthday is never forgotten.

IMG_6529

Meals lately have been all over the place. I have always said and still believe that Christmas should be called the “cream cheese holiday” since we consume so much of this food during this holiday. So after all the holiday get togethers were over, I made a big batch of chili and it was a perfect way to get back on a daily meal schedule.

Plus, I have a new addition in my kitchen and I was dying to give it a try. I have been working on some new recipes to share in the new year while I enjoy cooking with my new dutch oven.

IMG_6538

Speaking of meals…..I am trying something new after my workouts. The past year I have been having issues with charlie horses in my leg after workouts. It’s only one leg and it’s the leg that caused me such issues after surgery on my abdomen….I know, who would have thought…anyhow, someone told me to try coconut water after a workout. Well, I did and this drink is not good! However, I really wanted to see if it would help so then someone told me to try making it into a smoothie which I did and now it tastes a whole lot better. Since I do not have a fancy blender and don’t wish to buy one, I simply purchased a Blender Bottle and have been experimenting with different mixtures. Happily, I can report, I have seen great improvement in my leg pains after workouts and have been enjoying the smoothies I have been coming up with.

That pretty much sums up the past few weeks. I am looking forward to January and hope it brings some fun along with a bit of adventure in the new year.

Happy Thanksgiving/ Recap Of November

I can’t believe November is almost over. However, I can only hope that the rest of the winter goes as fast as this month did.

So much has happened this month. First, I  joined my first aqua zumba class and was amazed at the easiness of the class. I often think I could be in better shape, workout more, and so on(who doesn’t, right), but after taking this class I feel I am doing pretty well for myself.

Then, about mid month my husband and I started our training plan to prepare for our hiking/rock scrambling vacation coming up. This is actually something I find motivating and often gives me the extra push I need when I am just not feeling “it”!!! I really like to exercise, it gives me such a great feeling. But when we are specifically training with a goal in mind, that extra bit that I push myself is just so rewarding. It’s almost become a passion to always have a goal to reach when it comes to my physical performance.

Ohhhh, I can’t forget the shopping trip that I more or less begged my husband to accompany me on just so I would not have to lug my own packages all day long. I have done this trip before alone and it is miserable. He surprised me and proved me wrong by actually really enjoying this trip. (Or at least he said he enjoyed it) I did not carry a package all day, we shopped for 7 hours and really had a great time. We’ll see how much he really enjoyed it next year, when I ask again if he will offer his package carrying services:-)

While we were in the Chicago area we made plans to stop in and eat at Whole Foods. I wish we had one in Green Bay but if we did I would probably never eat at home then. I have been wanting to try sushi for awhile now and finally made it happen. Oh man, I am so addicted that I have even started adding it to our weekly menu plan here at home. It is so delicious that I regret waiting so long to try it.

In the job area of my life, we have officially transitioned over to all indoor play. Art projects are a daily activity, indoor toddler tumbling/yoga and gymnastics on our homemade balance beam are being enjoyed.

Even our son has been contributing to the fun (and the mess) with some science experimenting.

Another exciting thing that I was asked to do this month was give a major haircut to one of our son’s friends. I have been cutting both my husband and son’s hair for 20 years along with a few friends thrown in here and there. So being asked to do this for him was quite the honor. First, I couldn’t believe he was actually going to cut it all off. Although, when he arrived as planned he seemed pretty sure of this major event.

Here he is with a full head of hair.

And here he is after.

IMG_0343

It was pretty amazing!!!!

I would have to say it’s been an amazing month but the best thing that has happened this month for me is that my husband has decided for the first time in our 21 years of marriage not to deer hunt. I am not anti hunting in any way but this is one part of our marriage I wish I could just skip over every year. When he announced that he was debating giving it up I was so happy. Hunting, guns and other individuals with guns scare me. Knowing he will not be sitting in the woods with a firearm will make me rest easy.

On that note, I plan to enjoy some family time tomorrow and hope you all do the same with your families:)

Camp Food/My Day Pack

As I start packing and accumulating everything we will be needing for our upcoming vacation it sometimes gets to be a little overwhelming. We are fairly new to this camping thing and this will be our first “hike in” camp. Meaning that literally everything we want or need will be carried in on our backs.

I have most of our food purchased and our meals planned out. Some we know we will be having on the trail and some at camp. We do not plan to have any coolers or refrigeration at all. This is much harder than I figured it would be but I think we have a plan.

Here is almost all our food except for water, bagels and tortillas which I have not purchased yet.

IMG_0007

We do plan to be eating most of our meals on the trail, so not a lot of these products need much preparation.

As for our day packs, this was pretty easy to figure out for us. We learned so much when we hiked Zion National Park that I can typically throw together my day pack in minutes for any quick hike.

Here’s what I have in my day pack:

Extra socks

Vitamin “I” (Ibuprofen)

Bear Spray

First Aid

Sunscreen

Bandana/hair tie

Snacks

Camera

Go girl

Wet wipes

Water

IMG_0011

That’s it. Obviously this is for a summer hike. If it’s cooler I may throw in a light weight jacket. This would be all I need for a few hours of hiking any trail.

Keep in mind my husband and I normally always hike together and he also has a day pack with him. If we plan to do a meal on the trail he will typically carry this. He also has water, bug spray and the GPS just in case we decide to do some bush whacking. (Which somehow always seems to happen!) If you plan any hike near sundown you may want to add headlamps.

Every time we have ventured out on big trips so far, we have found something we did not like or something that would work out better in some situation or another. I will be anxious to see how this adventure plays out. Eventually we will find our happy place in the world of hiking/camping. However, with that being said, even when something does not quite work out as planned it still is not too bad.

Hiking to me is like a day at the spa for most women. It lets me relax, forget about everything for a bit and just be at peace. Give me a trail, some trees, a bluff to climb, and my hiking boots and I will meet you at the top with a smile:)

Where is your favorite place to hike?

What is your favorite camp food?

Here’s To The Weekend…Cheers Everyone

This has been one of those weeks where the weekend just does not come fast enough. It has been one horribly stressful week here and I am in desperate need of some recovery time.

Monday was a typical Monday, no one is ever really happy to see this day of the week arrive. Nothing really too terrible to deal with just Monday. We actually made it to the gym for a great workout together which was the highlight of the day. All in all, a good day.

Tuesday we were blessed with an outside temperature of 91 and super humid. I was in heaven, my hubby was tolerable, our son stayed inside all day, and my daycare kids were somewhat on the grumpy side. We ended up skipping all the physical activity that we had planned and after dinner made a trip to Costco. I always have mixed feelings about shopping at warehouse stores. We always spend tons of money but we also find a few new items that I am looking forward to trying.

IMG_5071

Wednesday I swear there had to be a full moon. It was cool and comfortable outside which meant everyone should have been very happy. Well, let me assure you, everyone was not happy at all. My daycare kiddos were a hand full and a half. Thankfully my husband came home just as tired as I was so we opted out of going to the gym that night and decided to go disc golfing. As we were leaving our son informed us that he was going to give it a try left handed (due to his healing broken collar bone) and join us. I was shocked but happy he decided to come. We all had great fun. Our neighbor joined us also and even received some great pointers on how to get her disc to go where she wanted it to go. Our son managed without too much frustration and my husband and I had a great time just playing the game as always. In honor of our son playing with his huge handicap, we all agreed to play the last hole left handed just like he had to do. This was quite amusing, took a few more throws than usual to reach the basket, and we all had a few laughs while trying to finish the game.

Then Thursday arrived. It started out with my husband sitting up in bed stating, “SHIT its 5 to 5!!!!!!!!!” Crap, I flew out of bed, packed his lunch while he got dressed, threw him together a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for the road and he was out the door in 6 minutes. From bed to road in 6 minutes. EPIC!!! This was not a great way to start the day for either of us.

As for today, it’s Friday and I will be counting the hours until I get my last kisses and hugs goodbye from my little ones. I can’t wait to sleep in tomorrow morning until at least 6 a.m. which should not be a problem thanks to the bottle of margaritas that has been chilling in the frig since our trip to Costco Tuesday night.

Cheers Everyone;)

Have a great weekend!
