The Crack Of Thunder vs. The Growl Of A Snow Plow

I came to the conclusion this weekend that I would much rather wake up to the crack of thunder than the growl of a snow plow early on a weekend morning. I am happy to report that the precipitation the professionals all had predicted for our area Sunday morning fell in the form of rain and I could not have had a bigger smile on my face. Thank the Lord above for this being rain and not snow. We would have been buried!

Let’s take a look at what else happened on a positive note this weekend.

Lunch out with a friend who I have not seen in months. It was great to catch up and chat.    IMG_1865

That pretty much sums up my weekend. Warm temps, good friends, great workouts and comfort food….who could ask for anything more?

With Christmas being a little over a week away our calendar is pretty full with family and friends get togethers coming up. We have two parties to attend and I am hoping to fit in some vehicle shopping somewhere in that mess. My boys attempted to finish good ole mom for Christmas yesterday and they came home a few hours later ready to both take up drinking from the mass chaos happening at this time of year in the stores. I secretly chuckled …..alright maybe not secretly….I actually laughed out loud at their frustration. I often ask to just buy my own gifts to make life easier on them but every year I am turned down and they ask for just a list. I think I may be getting closer and closer to them giving in and letting me do this after this years experience.

Do you buy for your spouse for the holiday?

Is it more important to get them what they ask for or get them something you think they would like?

Our Prayers To The Utah Hiking Community

A few short weeks ago my family was enjoying the beauty of the Utah area.

As I watched and listened to the numerous stories online and on television about the flash flooding and deaths that came to those hikers in Zion National Park this week I couldn’t help but wonder what they went through.

This area is where I find true happiness. It fulfills my passion for hiking and living large. I can only pray that this group of men and women were doing something they loved, in a place they loved.

This is simply heartbreaking and our prayers go out to their family and friends.

Standup Paddling the Chain of Lakes – Waupaca, WI

I finally had my chance to take my SUP out for it’s first paddle of the year. We watched the weather all week and Saturday was the day that was predicted to be beautiful, low 70’s and sunny. However, when the alarm went off I glanced outside and all I saw was clouds and more clouds. Life must go on and despite the dreary skies we packed up as planned and headed to a new destination, Waupaca, WI and the Chain of Lakes.

We started to hit a fine mist of rain about half way there and prepared for a wet paddle. I was so determined to make the most of the day regardless of the weather that we just continued on toward our destination. I had been quite anxious all week to know if my ankle was strong enough yet to be back on my board and within 20 yards I knew it was healed enough to continue. I have been pretty diligent on stopping whatever it is that I try when I feel pain, as I was directed to do, until I have gained back all the strength in it. So I knew if I felt pain, this would have been a short trip but happily I felt nothing and we paddled onward.

We started at Knight Lake/Manomin Lake boat launch. They have a nice sized parking area, no bathrooms, but a great place to launch kayaks, canoes and SUP’s.

Our destination was Marl Lake, known for it’s crystal clear waters and floating public dock which many paddlers are known to bring and share a picnic lunch at. To reach Marl Lake you must launch where we did, paddle through a small opening into Pope Lake and then again through another small opening into Marl Lake. If you have any sort of rudder or fin on your vessels watch for logs in these openings. (We had no trouble at all maneuvering through on this day)

Within minutes of reaching Marl Lake it started to sprinkle a little heavier. Which was ok, I had prepared for a possible wet ride anyhow not knowing if my balance would be what I wanted it to be after an entire winter. Although, not long after this sprinkle the rain really started coming down. My husband and I found a tree and sat under this for quite awhile waiting it out. Thankfully there was no lightening, just rain. After about 20 minutes it seemed to have let up a bit and we made our way as fast as possible to the other side of the lake to the floating public dock. We beached our vessels and again hid under the trees.

By this time I was wet, very wet, cold and a little miffed. However, my husband being the positive person he is said at least we were together and safe. Which was right, but sometimes that glass he always keeps half full I would just love to dump over his head. He always finds a bright side to everything and it sometimes drives me crazy!

Eventually the rain stopped and we did not take long to make our way back to the truck to warm up and dry out our clothes using the heat vents.

While waiting for our clothes to dry we shared our picnic lunch in the truck shivering instead of on this nice dock.

After lunch we did go back out for awhile. I paddled, he fished, and we just enjoyed the cloudy weather the best we could. Even though our day was not everything I had hoped for in the weather department, I am very glad to know that I am still able to enjoy my standup paddle board.
We have already researched a little more about the area and have our next few lakes in the Waupaca area picked out for our next trip. However, at this time we have no idea when this will happen. Summer is so short and there are just so many fun things to do that I can only hope we make it back here one more time before it’s over.

A Little Of Everything: MRI, Disc Golf, Sale,Workouts, Birthdays….

Hi, how was your weekend?

Mine was a bit crazy. Not overwhelming just crazy.

First let me update you on where I am with that ankle of mine that has been giving me pain since last August. After seeing a doctor last week I am now awaiting an appointment for a MRI of this ankle. Doc seems to think that I may have a piece of bone/cartilage floating around causing me such agony. As for repairing this problem if he is correct, well, that is to be discussed in more detail at that time. I suppose it all depends on recovery time for me. I have big plans coming up and I need to be able to rely on that ankle. Which right now I can although, I suffer the consequences later on. So in other words this topic is “to be continued” after I get some definite results.

Now back to the weekend. My son and I found time to clean his room and rearrange the furniture. During this cleaning frenzy he came up with even more junk that is being contributed to a garage sale we are hoping to have this summer, which made me very happy. I am not a pack rat which means it’s not hard at all for me to throw things in the sale pile. My son is not too bad with this either but my husband is the worst. He thinks at some time in his lifetime he may be able to use this or that and it drives me insane.

Saturday we actually had plans to do a few chores and then take a trip to the gym for a workout. We have not been to the gym in over two weeks. Instead we have been walking outside every night since the weather has been tolerable. It was suppose to be cold and miserable the entire weekend which turned out to be very wrong. By mid afternoon the sun was high in the sky and we just could not see spending a nice sunny day in a sweaty gym so we contacted our neighbor and all went disc golfing. The four of us dodged a few mud puddles( water hazards) and really had a good time. None of us were all that rusty which is always a nice surprise after a long winter.

After disc golf the sun was still high in the sky and we just could not see wasting a single moment of it, so we dropped off our son and neighbor at home and continued on to the Mountain Bay Trail for a two mile walk together.

Sunday brought us clouds, rain, and windy conditions. Although, that was ok, it gave us no reason what so ever not to make it to the gym on that day. So we woke up and my husband made us french toast, cinnamon apples, and coffee. After breakfast we were off the the gym for a wonderful workout together. It felt so good to be back, but surprisingly I felt no guilt about not being there for awhile. I knew I had not been just sitting back being lazy. I have still been working out daily, walking and/or hiking on weekends. It was just a nice change of pace. We hope to possibly start walking to the gym from our home, doing our weight lifting routine and then walking back. This way we each get a little of what we love to do without sacrificing one thing for another.

Sunday also was my husbands birthday. We celebrated with a nice lunch out as a family and then it was one of those days where cuddling on the couch just seemed appropriate since it was dreary, cold, and rainy outside. It was a great way to end a very nice weekend.
