Let’s Chat Over A Glass Of Wine…..

IMG_1560

August is half over and I have that sense of sadness starting to creep up in the back of my mind. I am not ready for summer to be over by any means. Why is it so short when winter seems to last forever????? There is still so much fun to be had, things to do, friends to see and I feel like I am running out of time to squeeze it all in.

OK, enough with the wining……onto other things. You may think I am just incredibly crazy with this next topic but here it goes. You are all aware we are vacationing in an amazingly beautiful place with mountains around every corner. I have grand plans to summit one of these beauties on this trip but did you know that this is not the only thing I am hoping to do while we are there. I also have high hopes to see my first mountain goat on the side of an actual mountain. I do not love these creatures, have no real reason to want to see this except to just witness it first hand. I have seen many, many goats in my lifetime and every single one has been in a cage, zoo, or on a farm. I really want to see one on a mountain side in its natural habitat.  Will it happen? We’ll see….IMG_2832

After we return from this trip we still have a pretty full calendar until that first snowflake falls, which hopefully will not be until December. I am excited to be going on a bus trip with two friends to a harvest festival a few hours away. I am also excited to be taking another bus trip with my husband again this year. He had so much fun last year joining me for a day of shopping….yes…you heard that correctly…..shopping, that he asked to go again. This is my absolute favorite place to shop and with someone along to help carry the packages it makes it even more fun.

We also have a big hike planned for our 22nd anniversary. Right now we are hoping to hike a 10 mile loop in Michigan. It’s suppose to be a fabulous hike, with great views along the way. I am not quite sure if my husband will be able to make this distance quite yet in this stage of his recovery although, we still plan to do what we can and turn back if we need to. We live close enough to this area that we could do half on this trip and half next time if needed. As long as we are together doing what we love, that is all that really matters.

IMG_3005Soon after we return from our trip, school will be back in session around our area. This is when my days will get a little quieter. Honestly, I am not quite sure if this is good or bad but it has to happen. I have cared for three children at a time for over 20 years as my profession and I have one that will be starting school this year. She has been my extra hands, my third leg, and my little helper for 4 years. Plus, she has truly become part of our family.

It’s been a long time since I have sent one off to school (my son is now 20 yrs old) but I know she is excited and that makes me excited for her. Although, that leaves me with two little ones that cannot talk a word yet for half of every day!!! So I do expect for a brief time that I will be a little nuts with too much quiet time since she typically talks nonstop. However, I know the two little boys I will still have will be talking soon enough, which means I should really try and enjoy the moment for what it is.

And with that I will finish my wine and wish you all a great day. Enjoy the moments, they sure pass by quickly.

A Littel Girl’s Wishes Are Granted

Nothing makes me happier when I see a spark in the eyes of a child who loves to be outdoors. Even at a young age you can tell if you have one of these children or not. I have a family that I offer childcare to that has one of these children. She is just shy of three years old and often tells us that she wants to do the things we do, such as kayak, standup paddle, hike and go fishing. She helps me pack supplies every Friday for whatever it is that we have planned for our weekends and every single Friday she says she’s going to come too. I knew this past Saturday we were going to have a pretty low key day at the beach so our son could give paddling a try so I asked her parents if we could borrow her for the day. They happily granted us this request which meant her little wish was was going to come true. She was finally going to get to kayak, standup paddle and go to the beach with us.

We packed up our supplies as usual adding her water shoes, suit, towel and PFD right along side of our gear. We talked about what we were all going to pack for a picnic, who would all be coming along and so on. We made a list for her mommy and daddy of all the supplies she would need to bring Saturday morning. And, I also added, that she needed to go to bed like a good girl and sleep a long time because Saturday would be her big day.

She showed up Saturday morning and we all packed into the truck and off we headed…to the beach. Upon arrival, she could not change into her suit fast enough. We hauled all our gear to the edge of the beach, laid down some safety rules (no entering the water without a life jacket on) and then it was play time.

Her first wish was to try kayaking. We did bring our recreational kayaks for her to ride with one of us in but my husband was the first one in his whitewater kayak. She immediately ran to him and he just sat her on top of his kayak skirt and she was all smiles.

We eventually got her to get into a recreational kayak with me and we paddled the lake for a bit before she said it was time for the standup paddle board. She wasted no time hopping on but was a little more unsure about this ride than the kayak. I think she expected sides on the board and obviously there are no sides to hold you in.

Her biggest wish was to paddle by herself. She is three and it’s all about independence so my husband granted this wish but dropped down to his knees because she was not brave enough to stand.

She was one happy little girl, doing all these big girl sports. After some time though, the little kid came back out in her, my husband and my son. They all joined her in building a sand castle together.

We called this Addie’s Island and it even had a waterfall!!!!

About two hours into our day her little belly started to get hungry so it was picnic time. I knew exactly what she all asked for and most of it was granted along with a few of her favorites, like green peppers and hummus.

We really all had the best time. She was a complete angel the entire day. She enjoyed playing in the sand, getting to ride alone in my husband’s kayak while we spun her in circles and even using her big muscles to paddle with me really fast to beat my son back to shore for our picnic. It was a wonderful day!

I should point out, this is typically not part of what I do for my daycare families. I don’t often see this spark in a child anymore and it is quite heartbreaking that many kids will never get to experience things like this in their lifetime. This is the same child that requested to come hiking with us one day and we also granted her this wish back in Spring. Since then, her parents have followed along and have taken her camping for the first time and also on a few hikes. I am so proud they are encouraging and granting her the opportunity of an active lifestyle in the outdoors.

I am also very thankful they granted us the opportunity to have this day with their daughter. The big hug, kiss and thank you I received when I went to put her into her car seat before leaving the beach for home made me so proud. I am quite sure she will remember this trip for a long time.

A big Thank You goes out to her mommy and daddy:)

Things That Drive Me Crazy

Do you ever have those moments when you can’t believe what you just heard or what you just saw? I have many times. And most of the time I keep my thoughts to myself. However, at other times I have had to just speak my mind and normally my husband is that lucky person that has to hear me rant about these things. Lucky guy:)

Well, not today. You all get to hear me rant a little.

Do you know what drives me CRAZYYYYYY:

While at a county park one day we saw a parent changing their child on top of a park picnic table. Are you kidding me???? Bend over, get on your hands and knees and do it on the grass. People come to parks to have picnics on these tables. Think about this please. Let me paint you a picture. Would you all eat lunch on a changing table in a public bathroom???? I did not think so.

Dog owners that use retractable leashes Actually the leash is not the problem, it’s the owner at the other end. Not every person you walk past on the street while walking your dog wants to be licked, jumped on, or wants to pet your dog. That little button on the end you hold is for you (the owner) to lock the leash in place and not let the dog approach people you pass by. If your dog is friendly and needs attention, ASK that person you pass if they would like to say hi and pet your dog before letting them approach that person.

American flags made in China No explanation needed

Politics We teach our children to play nice together and share. Maybe these adults should take up parenting before politics and learn some life lessons.

People that talk on cell phones while on cardio equipment at the gym. Most gyms arrange there cardio machines so they are right next to each other in a line. I am sorry but if whatever you need to be discussing is that darn important that it cannot wait until your 30 minutes is up, step off and go elsewhere to discuss the matter at hand.

Dog Strollers Unless your dog has a medical problem, I see this as a joke. Vets tell you to walk your dog for the purpose of exercise. That means your dog needs to be actually WALKING next to you.

Thank you for listening, I feel better.

Do you have anything you need to get off your chest?
