Spring 2015: Devil’s Lake State Park and Glamping (glamorous camping) at Fox Hill RV Park & Campground

This weekend we visited Devil’s Lake State Park and stayed in a rustic cabin at Fox Hill RV Park & Campground. IMG_0894

I call this glamping (glamorous camping) since it’s not quite as rough as camping in a tent, but not as nice as camping in an RV or deluxe cabin with all the amenities. Yes, we have a tent and we could have easily slept in it this weekend due to the very nice temps but at the time of reservations (months ago) we did not know the weather and the heated cabin is nice to have in Spring.

Remember those weekend goals I told you I was hoping to accomplish this past weekend? Let me refresh your memory and let you know how I did on each one.:

#1 To not over do activity with that ankle. I need to strengthen it back up. As much as I would love to hike 10 miles, that is not likely going to happen. I do plan to hike a little this weekend since our plans have been on the calendar for quite some time now, but all in good reason.
I did accomplish this one. It took all of us to get me to the top of my favorite bluff but I did it and it was very rewarding. The combination of hiking boot, hiking poles, and a medical boot is something I NEVER thought I would see but it is what it is.

#2 I really need to even out my tan. One leg is white and the other is not. Since I can have the boot off for a while each day, this will be my time to marinate in the sunshine.
This one I worked on when I was able but you can still see a difference.

#3 Try out my new insoles when I have the boot off. I’ve been told this could be painful, but I am not too worried. I have been in pain for months, how much worse could it be?
I also did this one. I inserted the insole into my Keen boot and hiked the entire bluff trail with it. And when I am not in the boot it is in my other shoe as well. So far so good. I will write a full review when I can wear them both for an entire day, which will be soon.

#4 Enjoy my first campfire meal of the season. (Fire danger here is very high, this one is iffy) Done….my first roasted marshmallow  of the year.

#5 Spend some family time together. My son was offered a job last week which has him working in his field of photography almost every single weekend photographing weddings. This could be one of our last weekends together as a family doing what we love so I need to savor every second. Done. We hiked, sat by the campfire, did some fishing, played cards, chess, checkers, and disc golf.

#6 Last but not least, work on losing the three pounds I have gained from sitting around unable to exercise for the last month. The night I came home from my appointment we actually took our first walk in a month.(with the boot still on) It was great!
This one I am still working on. I don’t expect nothing to happen until I am back to normal exercise so for now I am just hoping for the best.

All in all it was a fantastic weekend. Weather was gorgeous. I was so happy to be back on the trail. We had some great family time and I came home pain and swelling free which was my biggest worry of the entire weekend.

Some Things Weighing On My Mind Lately

I have had some issues that have been weighing on my mind lately and I think I am getting a grip on them one by one. Here are a few and the solution I have taken to solve them.

*My afternoon workout routine is not happening with two infants! This for me is tragic to say the least. I live to exercise. It’s not an obsession by any means but more of a release and a way to relax. Recently I started caring for two infants and sleep schedules are all over the place.(As they should be with infants) Yes, I could workout while they are awake but then I don’t feel as if I am doing my job which is caring for them and entertaining their little minds. So I have decided to get in my normal afternoon routine of a half hour cardio and some weight lifting in the early morning before anyone arrives and right after my husband leaves for work. We are talking by 4:50 a.m. I am working out. Surprisingly it has not been too bad. It’s been quiet, relaxing, and honestly somewhat serene. I do hope eventually I can get everyone back on our normal afternoon schedule but for now I really think this is going to work best for all of us.

*Spending money on bear spray that could ultimately never be used. Recently I made a few calls about a back country hiking trip my husband and I have been planning. I received some really good tips and information from a park ranger that made us rethink what we needed to carry while hiking in this area. Typically we do carry a small hand held pepper spray for protection on the trails we hike. Ironically, not so much for animals but to be used on anything.(There are weirdos everywhere). After speaking with the park ranger he advised us to invest in a can of bear spray for this area we plan to hike. I told my husband and recently while shopping we located this type of protection. I (being the frugal person I am) almost sh*t when I saw the price tag. For $50 you can buy a can of bear spray with a holster to easily attach it to yourself or your backpack in the event you would come across a bear in the wilderness. I really had trouble spending this kind of cash for something that could literally never get used or could expire before it’s ever needed. Then my husband mentioned that he would rather carry this than a firearm (which I totally agree), and that $50 is cheap when it could save our lives. I had to agree with that too. After thinking about it for a while, it did make sense.

*Ankle pain is still bothering me. If you are a follower you know I have been dealing with a sore ankle for a very long time now. After kicking a rock in the river mid summer last year while portaging I have had this pain. It has gotten a lot better and the ankle swelling has actually subsided unless I spend hours on my feet, walk many miles or hike without my boots. Now the only real time I have pain is when it is bent in a certain direction. When this happens, the pain is horrendous……like tears in my eyes painful. After trying ice, heat, ankle wraps, water therapy, compression socks, and rest I have finally decided to see an orthopedic specialist this week. Enough is enough, I am done with this pain. I am not a doctor fan what so ever, but I feel in my mind it has been long enough and I have done all I can do. So hopefully by the end of the week I will have an answer and a plan to be pain free soon.

*My husbands birthday gift. It’s almost that time of year again, my husbands birthday. We are at the age now that when we want something we just go out and get it so I never know what to buy him for a gift. This year I searched hard and was coming up with nothing. Until I was actually given an idea from a friend and did some research and found the perfect gift. I would love to tell you all but sometimes he reads this so I can’t just yet. I can say, I think he’s really going to like it and I am happy I have another year before I need to search again:)

*Where to go for Easter? Every year we try and share Easter together somewhere special. This year we have not come up with a plan quite yet and we don’t even have any ideas.

*Section Hiking. I have been toying with the idea of trying to section hike the Pacific Crest Trail or the Appalachian Trail. I have been researching for weeks and really think this is going to be a goal in the near future. I mentioned it to my husband and to my surprise he is all for the idea. Does anyone have any advice for us? Do you like one trail more than the other? Let me know what you think.

Is there anything weighing on your mind? Do you want to talk about it?

Life’s Highs and Lows

Doesn’t it always seem when something happens that is great there is always something right behind that is not so great? Lately, this has been the story of my life, high and then low. Much like being on a roller coaster, which in case you did not know, I do not enjoy roller coasters!

Take A Look:

High: It’s now December, one month closer to Spring. Hurray!

Low: December is crazy busy with parties, family, stress, shopping, birthdays etc.

High: Every week that passes is one week closer to vacation.

Low: I am already dreading coming home from vacation and I have not even left yet.

High: My Christmas shopping is almost done.

Low: Now I need to wrap everything.

High: 2015 will be bringing many changes in my daily life, but I am confident it will all work out for the better.

Low: Sleep has been pretty scarce lately. I blame stress over these changes.

High: Our health insurance deductible has been met this year thanks to our son and his accident back in May. (We have not met our deductible in years) So health care has actually been affordable.

Low: Our deductible will start over(as most do) Jan. 1.

High: I walked 5 miles for the first time in months without my ankle taped up and I had no pain:)

Low: My husband is sick with a respiratory bug and I am hoping I am not next to battle this illness.

High: I have a girl’s Christmas get together planned for this month and it should be fun.

Low: Our daycare Christmas party is also planned and even though it’s an exciting time for the kids, it’s always a very rough day for me. Kids don’t understand that there is only one of me to three of them. And let’s face it, whom ever thought of twist tying or using screws and plastic pieces to secure toys to the cardboard packages they are sold in could not have had any children. This is simply over kill in my eyes. And it takes FOREVER to get the darn toy out of the box. My only hope is that we have a major snowstorm that day and my husband stays home to help. Or my son has off of school and work that day and I can use him to my advantage. (now let’s just hope neither one of them read this post)

High: We are really doing well on our training. My cardio time has improved significantly and if I had more time in a day, I know I could even go longer.

Low: I am dreading January when the gym we belong to fills with new year’s resolution newbies!!! I know….. how bad I am to think this way. I really do support a healthy lifestyle, it just frustrates me when you join a gym to become healthy and spend most of that time walking around or sitting on the machines texting instead of working out. Do that in the lobby and leave the machines for those of us that really want to be healthy and fit:)

As you can see, there are many things weighing on my mind right now. Some good, some bad and some are even quite ugly. I just keep my head held high and remember life could be so much worse.

Changing My Routine To Minimize Pain

Have you ever taken aqua zumba? Did you like it?

I finally decided to sign up and am looking forward to the adventure. I have been having a lot of ankle pain in one ankle since kicking a rock this summer in the river during a portage. (Not a smart move, I would not recommend doing this) Although, it’s not quite bad enough for me to go see a doctor yet, I am trying to stay as active as possible through the pain. I figured a water class would help this ailment and I am going to give it a try.

That being said, I do not plan to take it easy until the snow flies for sure. I have to savor these snow free days and get outside as much as possible. My hiking boots offer instant pain relief and ice helps when I sit long enough to ice it. Nothing at the gym hurts unless I walk the treadmill which I dislike with a passion. So, no worries there.

Anyhow, I am looking forward to trying this class. It gives me a set time and place for something to happen for the next 6 weeks, which for me at this time of year is great. Add in two weekends of family fun and a possible toddler hike we are hoping to squeeze in yet and I will be booked until Christmas. Awesome!!!!

Do you like having a full calendar?

What are your likes and dislikes regarding aqua zumba?

Get Up And Move Update-June

June has been a month of tons of activity. I had no problem what so ever accomplishing 30 minutes per day of movement.

Let’s see, hubby and I finally made it to the tennis court. We played numerous games of disc golf, even had our neighbor give it a try with us. I have religiously made it to the gym twice a week for the whole month. And I have enjoyed my standup paddle board more often this year than any other year before.(July Goal #1 accomplished)

IMG_4907

Kayaking has been a bit of a challenge with our son not able to paddle due to his broken collar bone but we have been out without him once or twice. Of course I am finding time to walk, if not at night with my hubby, then during the day with all my daycare kiddos. I even found myself walking with our son three times a day right after his accident to get his stamina back up after his head injury and concussion.

My hope is to take advantage of yoga in the park before summer is over and also start hiking real soon again. However, right now we are fully booked with everything else that we can’t even think about trying to add more to our lives.

I just hope your all finding the time to Get Up And Move!

Tell me, what have you been doing?

Have you tried anything new?

If you could try something new, what would it be?
