Just Couldn’t Get It In Gear This Week

This week was strange having the holiday on a Tuesday. For me it’s much like having two Mondays and let’s face it, no one really likes a Monday. Although, we all make the best of what life dishes out and that is exactly what I did.

After our big hike Saturday I had originally planned on a gym visit Sunday. That is until I woke up and my legs/ankles told me this was not going to happen. So I simply took the entire day off from exercise which is something I never do. Even on my rest days I still find myself doing something active whether that be chasing after kids while playing in the yard, walking to the park or even doing yoga stretches to loosen up. Rest days for me typically are not great, I feel miserable when I stop moving but I know everyone needs a rest day and that is exactly what I did Sunday. All day I rested….I even laid in bed for two hours Sunday afternoon and watched a movie. It has been years since I have seen an entire movie.

Anyhow, here is what a holiday week of exercise turned out to be for me. Clearly, I just could not seem to get it in gear all week long. I would bet we all have these moments and I can only hope next week is a bit better.

Saturday: BIG HIKE…..read about it here if you missed it….9.7 miles whoo hoo!!!

Sunday: rest day

Monday: morning weights in our home gym, 1.5 mile trail walk

Tuesday: 5 hrs.of kayak paddling…..wonderful, sunny hours;-)

If you missed it read about it here

IMG_8518

Wednesday: 30 minute recumbent bike in our home gym

Thursday: 2.5 mile steamy trail walk…..this was the hottest day all week

Friday: morning weights in our home gym

It seems the first half of the week I rested my sore ankles from the long hike Saturday. And then after paddling for five hours Tuesday I needed to rest my shoulders and arms and did not lift many weights. Although, remember, I do lift kids every day, all day for my job so really I was not resting my upper body much.

July 4, 2017….A Day On The Chain O Lakes -Waupaca, WI

We all had the day off this July 4 holiday so just like old times we loaded up the kayaks and headed out as a family to one of our favorite places to paddle…the Chain O Lakes in Waupaca,WI.

IMG_8509

Very seldom do we all have the chance to paddle together anymore….oh, how life has changed since our son has graduated, starting working, and has become an adult. So as you can imagine, these days are cherished.

As usual, my husband and son had fishing on their to do list, I had swimming and I really wanted some time to relax in my beloved blow up inner tube. We arrived shortly after 9a.m and was happy to see the parking lot had plenty of spots left in it.

IMG_8544

We unloaded our kayaks and I strapped my tube to the back of mine. We then made our way to Marl Lake first. Marl is the best swimming lake here in my opinion.

IMG_8518

It has a public dock, the bluest water probably in WI..or at least that I have ever seen in WI, and no weeds. However, if you are not here early…good luck finding room near this dock. By 1p.m. this same afternoon the dock was packed with people.

IMG_8531

I wasted no time at all beaching my kayak and taking a seat in my tube to relax while my boys fished the same lake near by.

I had a great time, sucked up plenty of Vitamin D, was completely relaxed, and even managed a good swim while here. Our son, on the other hand, received his first ever fish foot massage….I believe this is something probably in New York or somewhere where the fish pick at your feet/toes while you are in a massage chair. Well, here in WI…it’s free and we don’t need an appointment for it either.

IMG_8540

We again paddled 6 of the lakes total for a total of five hours, swam in one, fished in all of them, saw numerous turtles, our son captured many gorgeous photos with his gear, and most of all we all enjoyed a great day together.

Summer has arrived and hopefully is around to stay for a few weeks here in Wisconsin. Make sure you all get out and enjoy it before it’s too late!

Paddling The Chain O Lakes in Waupaca, WI-Summer 2017

We finally made it to my favorite place to paddle…. Waupaca, WI and the Chain O Lakes. Upon waking up Saturday morning we had originally planned to head to Door County.  Although, after watching the weather forecast, I quickly changed my mind and suggested we head to Waupaca. You see, when its hot here in Green Bay then Door County is typically 20 degrees cooler and that would put their temps right about 70-75…..too cold for me to enter the water. And I had my heart set on paddling and doing some lake swimming. I suggested this quick change of plans to my husband and he said….let’s do it! So we did!

IMG_1266

Upon arrival, we were not surprised to see some very large trees down between the chain of lakes since we saw some big trees along the highway while driving. However, everything down and in the path of the lakes is easy to get around in both kayaks, canoes, and standup paddle boards.

IMG_8264

As usual, I go to paddle/swim and my husband never forgets his fishing pole. Three casts in and he caught his first northern pike of the day. It was going to be a good day;-)

IMG_8263

Since we arrived by 9:30 Saturday morning the parking lot was still easily doable and I made my way immediately to the public dock on Marl Lake to get in my swim I was hoping for. Marl is probably my favorite lake here…..it’s crystal clear and has the most turtles which I love. However, the public dock where we beach our kayaks to swim fills up quickly on nice days so I wanted to get this in before it was too busy.

Next, it was time to make our way back through the water path to another one of the lakes.

IMG_8286

At this point we passed by where we were parked and noticed that the number of people starting to show up had nearly tripled. Wow, they just kept coming and the lot was nearly full with cars, trucks, and trailers.

Making our way through Beasley Creek was once again a pain in the butt as always. We were hoping with the amount of rain we have had in the area lately that there would be enough water to paddle the entire creek but no luck. Although, this time we planned ahead just in case and my husband grabbed a piece of kayak strapping and threw it in his kayak. This way I held his boat, stayed in mine, and he pulled me and his kayak through with little effort.

IMG_8292

I enjoyed the ride and captured a beautiful hawk hiding out in the trees right next to the creek edge.

IMG_8296

Arriving at the next lake in the chain he again caught a fish after a few casts and this time it was a nice bass.

IMG_8297

IMG_8300

Our entire day was a success. No rain, abundant sunshine, warm water, and great fishing. And I even had my first swim of 2017 in a lake…..it was a great way to spend a Saturday.

Wow, what a weekend!!! We finally dusted off our paddles from the long winter, had a little fog one morning, rain another morning, and relived a place that we use to take our son every year when he was smaller. We enjoyed dinner outside at our favorite place….the front porch and we all are feeling rejuvenated and ready for a great summer ahead.

Did you do anything fun you care to share….if so feel free to comment?

Finally February…What’s Next On The Agenda?

A few more weeks to go until we change our clocks once again and life starts looking a little brighter and much more fun in my eyes.

Typically by this time of year, I have already starting planning our summer excursions, booked some camp sites, and made numerous other plans to fill up our summer calendar. This year, however, has been a bit different…..I have done none of this. UGGGG! I have been, in all honesty, unmotivated since we returned from Tennessee to do any of this. Life has been chaos and I just can’t seem to catch a break long enough to even consider summer planning.

I have been keeping up with my pledge to try at least one new recipe a week for our family dinners. And so far, we have found some real winners. Like beef with pepperocino peppers in the slow cooker. The easiest recipe ever since you literally take your beef roast and lay it in the slow cooker. Dump the jar of pepperocinos with the juice over the roast. Add a shimmy shake of Worcestershire sauce and a tsp of beef bouillon to the mixture and cover and turn it on. Taaaadaaaa….6-8 hours later you shred it up and serve how you wish. I layered whole wheat rolls with cheese and baked them until they were melted. Then I added the meat and served it with a side salad. A complete meal, with little work and very tasty to end a long day.

IMG_6952

With February normally being the month I struggle with the most, so far it has been ok.I have been keeping busy thanks to many different things on my plate at one time. With a trip disaster in January to TN, I am still fighting with the airlines for refunds. I have made and have had plans with friends cancelled due to illnesses(on their end) numerous times. And I have been doing my best to keep a level head about some work issues that have been plaguing me.

I recently went to dinner with my brother to a restaurant I had not been to in at least 15 years and was happily surprised by the remodel job. The place was beautiful but the food was mediocre at best. Next month it is my turn to choose the restaurant and I think I might try Thai for the first time ever. I love that my brother has a broad sense of taste, since then we have many different options to choose from. Often, when I go out with my husband, it’s to the same three restaurants and even though its nice, I sometimes wish he was a bit more adventurous when it came to trying new things.

IMG_6955

February at the gym has significantly gotten less crowded. Normally by February I am so ready to be outside doing something active, however, this year I am not quite there yet. I am loving the gym and my time to do what I love. I have been concentrating on strengthening my abs and core along with my upper body again. Paddling season is not that far off and after taking it easy all last summer due to my abdominal surgery and the summer before due to my husbands disc herniation….this summer I plan to paddle as much as possible.

IMG_4575

We have a bunch of birthdays coming up in the next few weeks and no real plans as of yet to celebrate them. For mine, I am hoping to get a nice dinner out somewhere…..maybe Hibachi/Sushi….we shall see.

There is also an REI garage sale date coming up and unless there is a snowstorm that stops me from making this two hour drive to our nearest REI, I have the calendar marked and the gift cards are burning a hole in my pocket. On the list….a new pair of Keen hiking boots for yours truly. Mine have taken me many miles through Minnesota, Tennessee, Arizona, Michigan, Utah, Arkansas, and all over Wisconsin. I think it’s time to let them rest and break in a new pair.

IMG_5991

And come next month our clocks will once again be changing. Daylight will be longer, snow will begin to melt away leaving mud around every corner. And we will slowly start to venture back outside and start making memories again of times better spent somewhere other than in the four walls of our house. Ohhhh, how I wait patiently for this month to pass.

Geocaching By Kayak….It’s Harder Than What You Would Think

While geocaching one day last Spring we noticed that the area we were geocaching in had a few water geocaches. Which we decided to try and find this past weekend in our kayaks.

We arrived at our destination and prepared to paddle our way around the area.

IMG_5178

IMG_5174

IMG_5172

Our first cache was easily located. We knew the name of the cache was related to the eagle nest located in this area, so we headed that direction first.

IMG_5149

IMG_5147

IMG_5150

It took very little searching to locate this one. However, the next one we searched for quite sometime. And eventually gave up this search since maneuvering a kayak under trees is not our favorite place to be. There are a lot of spider webs under fallen tree branches. EWWWWW!

IMG_5157

Our next few were apparently located somewhere under the bridge. Which we thought would be an easy find also….however, there are even more spider webs and spiders for that matter, under bridges.

IMG_5161

IMG_5165

So after very little discussion on whether or not we should continue searching, we gave up and just enjoyed the area we were in for what it was. We paddled the shoreline,

IMG_5185

took a break and had a picnic lunch,

IMG_5180

and enjoyed the time we spent together.

IMG_5182

We added one found cache to our list of successful finds and called it a day after about three hours of paddling.

Moms Can Have Fun Too

Why is it that after becoming a mom and raising our children most of us often feel we are too old to have fun? This is not the case ladies. Giving birth does not mean giving up on life goals of your own to give your children everything they could ever hope and dream for in life. It may mean putting them on hold for quite some time, but believe me, there is life after raising kids. You may ask where I am going with this statement….well, let me tell you.

This past weekend I had the opportunity to spend with two of my closest friends on a lake at one of their cabins. One is very new to kayaking, one is very new to any water sports, and I, as you all know, would live in the water if it did not freeze like a brick here in WI during the winter. We arrived to find the lake quite rough. Actually, in all honesty, the friend that owns the cabin called us before even leaving home and said its was very windy and we could reschedule if we wanted because the lake was too rough for her to even consider going into. I relayed that message to by husband and son and we all had the same thought…..what, too rough….not possible. We headed out the door minutes later.

IMG_4582

Anyhow, we arrived to find waves and my girlfriend repeating that we were crazy to want to paddle the lake. It took some time but eventually we got her into her kayak and us three ladies took our first paddle together. For extra assistance, my husband was not far behind just in case. A few strokes of her paddle and she admitted that it was not what she expected it to be. Her boat took the waves well and she did just fine. Clark Lake-4

Our next adventure of the day was tubing…..which if you recall two of us did a few weeks ago with not even the right type of tubes. This time, however, we used the proper type of tube and even though they both thought they were going to watch this adventure…. I would not take no for an answer. It’s too rough, my back will hurt, my hair will get messed up, I am not made to tube…..whateverrrrrr, lets do it!!!! And we all did.

Clark Lake-13

A big THANKS goes out to our husbands and my son. One for driving the boat, one husband assisting with the rope and ready to dive in for assistance, and my son for capturing this moment on camera from the boat. We had a fantastic time and some great laughs together. No one regretted this activity and we all were so happy to share it together.

After this it was time for warm clothes and margaritas by the campfire. IMG_4583

Maybe we forget as mom’s that fun can be had by all. Of course we want our children to enjoy life and grow up to be happy and as the parent we need to be the responsible one to say no that’s too dangerous or yes go for it. We make them wear their bike helmets, life jackets, shin guards and bandage them when they fall. However, that does not mean that when the time is right and our kids are grown up old enough to fend for themselves that we can’t go back to being a bit of an adventurer and try new things. I always say, life is too short to die before you have lived so go for it and live big. I plan to never say, I wish I had done this or that…..I plan to go with no regrets.

IMG_4575

Are you a mom that has raised kids and find yourself scared to try new adventures?

Why do you hold yourself back?

Are you living to die or dying to live?????
