Looking Ahead At Fall

It’s September which means, school is back in session around our area, apples are almost ready to be picked, and the leaves on our trees are starting to fall faster everyday. I love the crisp mornings, the piles of leaves we can rake and jump into, and the abundance of fall veggies available at my favorite market. This year, however, I am pretty excited about a few other things I have on the calendar.

My husband and I are going camping at one of our favorite parks in the next few weeks. The last time we were there it was over 100 degrees and hiking was pure torture. I have never been so hot and miserable. I am hoping for a cooler tenting experience this time around.

We are also going to squeeze in a fall trip to hike another state park that we love. Although this one we will be staying in a cabin since our son will be joining us.

I have another girls day planned coming up where we are taking a bus trip to an art festival. None of us have ever been to this art festival so we are all very excited.

My husband and I will be celebrating 21 years of marriage this fall….. which I really can’t believe it’s been that long. No plans are made yet but I am sure we will come up with something.

And the most amazing thing I have planned in the next few weeks is a day of retail therapy. I am not a big fan of shopping, although once a year I take this bus trip to a city that I LOVE. In the past I have had so many packages that I simply ache for days afterwards from carrying all my bags for hours. This year however, I found a solution to this problem….I have hired my hubby to accompany me on this trip! Can you believe it? I still can’t, quite honestly. It is going to cost me a pair of shoes that he wants and I am sure I will find out what else in good time. Either way, it should be a great trip. (I hope)

That’s what our fall calendar looks like. In between all these events we are also hoping to achieve come more miles geocaching on the Ahnapee trail, a few more trips in our kayaks, and as many outdoor walks as I possibly can before the snow flies.

All in good time….

 

 

July Goals

I feel as if summer is just flying by so quickly. Which is why I decided to make a list of goals for July. My hope is to make sure I get at least some of these things accomplished before this month is over.

Not a single thing on my list is related to work, home improvement, or honestly a chore. It’s all mainly fun things, health related things or things that just need to be done before we run out of summer. The way I see it, I can do work, home improvements and chores all winter long.

My July Goals:

1. Get out on my SUP as much as possible

In the past summers we have either kayaked more or had vehicle issues that I was not able to spend as much time as I would have preferred on my SUP. Not this year….we made a car top carrier purchase back in March and it was the best buy we made this year. Now I can go with either vehicle whenever I wish.

2. Get rid of the tan line that circles around my ankles from my kayaking shoes!!!!

Normally this would not bother me in the least bit, BUT, some friends of ours are getting married in a few weeks and it is not going to look so nice in the sandals I plan to wear. So I figure I better at least try and even this out somewhat before then.

3. Have a Mom’s Day Off 🙂

Since my own son is 19 yrs old I don’t consider myself a full time mom anymore. I hold more of a part time status in this matter. So really this is just a day off of being a mom, wife and a childcare provider. I already have it planned, our destination is chosen, and the women I plan to go with is also arranged. Now we all just have to not let life happen and have it be cancelled for some reason or another. Here’s to hoping and we have a great time.

4. Date night with my husband

What can I say, we spend a lot of time together but never really on a date. We should make this a priority but we don’t. After 20 years of marriage, date nights are kind of over rated. However, it is my turn to plan our date night and what I want to do on this particular night is super exciting and I can’t wait to try it. He was the one that got to plan the last date night and it ended with me riding a roller coaster which I will never do again.  Now we just need to pick a night and make it happen.

5. Try 2 new recipes

Summer time is the worse time of year for me to cook. If I had a backyard outdoor kitchen it may be different but I don’t. So this goal will be hard to do but may be possible if it rains two days in the month of July.

6. Defunk our kayak equipment

I know I said no chores but this one is really super easy and will only take a few minutes. If you are a kayaker you will know what I mean by DEFUNK! Kayaking gear can get pretty smelly and it literally takes seconds to fill up a tub with enzyme solution, dip each piece of equipment and hang to dry. I try and do this at least once or twice during the summer and then a final time before storing the equipment for the winter.

7. Try a new restaurant

We have a few new restaurants in the area and we always seem to venture back to our normal favorites. We really need to broaden our horizons and try some new places.

So there is the list. Nothing too elaborate or difficult to achieve. Ha, I say that now but I know I will struggle with a few of these. I am hoping that by making a list it will help me feel a little more accountable. We’ll see….either way, let’s all hope for a great, bright, and sunny month of July and have some fun 🙂

My Birthday Will Be Filled With….Wishing, Wondering and Waiting

As I celebrate another birthday today, I can’t help but wonder what the next few years will bring. Would I ever want to be 20 again, no way! 30, maybe. Each decade that has passed has brought much different pros and cons.

In my 20’s I was newly married and a mom first and foremost. We were new homeowners. And honestly, every penny we spent I kept track of. Would I go back? No, I am happy all that is over with. I loved being a new mom, love our home, enjoyed being a new wife and I got us through some rough times financially just starting out. I can honestly say I am happy that stage of life is over.

In my 30’s I was obviously still a mom first and foremost. Although, I was able to concentrate on me a little more at times. We were still happily married. I had been now self employed for quite sometime. My husband went through a major job change after 17 years, which was stressful for us all. And finances were much easier than the decade before. This is the decade I also came to realize I wanted more out of my life and started making changes to my lifestyle to achieve my weight loss. Would I go back to this decade, possibly. I’ll be honest, being a parent to a son between the age of 14-16 was the worst. If I could skip that part in this decade, I would go back.

Which brings me to today, my 40’s. I am still a mom but with more of a “part time position” with him being an adult now. We get along fairly well and enjoy doing things together. Which is a great feeling for me. I sometimes feel like he is now watching over me instead of the other way around but I am ok with that. I am still happily married. I have been self employed for 18 years now and still enjoy what I do. Yes, it has some ups and downs, but what job doesn’t? I have no problem putting myself first again now that my son is grown. I am still eating healthy and working out, which brings me great joy and satisfaction. I will admit, I think my hormones are starting to mess with my mind and body because some days dragging myself to the gym is hell, but I still do it. I feel more pressure to accomplish the things I have on my bucket list, but slowly I am getting them crossed off. I am much braver now than I used to be. I don’t worry about what other people think about me or the things I do as much as I did when I was younger. I also feel like it’s my time to make some big dreams comes true, before I am too old to do so. This may take some time, but I am working on it. All in all, so far this decade has been pretty good to me. Especially when I look around and see others my age and compare lifestyles. I feel blessed to have the life I live.

So for the next year my goals are simple. Stay active, enjoy life with my husband and son, eat healthy and work toward my one dream. All of you that are close to me will know exactly what that dream is. The rest of you will just have to wait until it comes true for me to share it.

I will make my wish, blow out my candle and wait to see what happens in the next few years.

Getting Your Significant Other On The Healthy Bandwagon

Whether it be your husband, wife, or significant other, if one part of the pair is trying to be healthier, I think it’s only normal to want the other part of you to be healthier also.

The big question is, how to make this happen? Honestly, you can’t unless they are ready willing and able. Sometimes just you being healthy and them seeing the benefits of your progress is enough to persuade them to give it a try. If they see the rewards of you feeling better, having more energy and even losing weight,they may be more apt to giving it a try.

When I first started to change to a healthier lifestyle, my husband was not into any changes what so ever. After a few months, and a not so great doctor appointment, he came home and said we needed to change some things with him. By this time, I had already lost a good amount of weight and had started walking for exercise. We agreed that he would start walking with me twice a week for two miles. We also agreed that we would not cut red meat totally out of his diet, but would have it no more than twice a week. As far as the snacks that my husband loved, they almost all changed. Chips turned into baked chips, ramen noodles were banned from the house, he rarely had the pleasure of cookies being in the house, and eating an entire frozen pizza was never going to happen again. Oh, and his beloved deep fryer went to the city dump.Ultimately, he adjusted fairly good to all these changes.

We added more veggies to our meals and had healthier snacks readily available to grab and go.

Today he is walking with me almost on a daily basis and if we are not walking we are doing some other activity. I still to this day ask him to join the gym I belong to, but so far he continues to turn me down. That’s alright though because we have accomplished what we were trying to do which is making our family healthier.

Now, there are a few tricks that you can try if your significant other is picky about what they like to eat or do for exercise.  You can easily bake things only using egg whites and not the entire egg. If you need something crunchy, try panko crumbs and baking the items instead of breading and deep frying. In some recipes applesauce can be substituted for the oil that’s called for in the recipe. Substitute ground turkey for ground beef. It is very easy to hide veggies in casseroles like spinach or zucchini in lasagna, finely chopped carrots in chili or a thin layer of hummus in wraps, etc..

When suggesting exercise, don’t suggest it during his/her favorite television show or when it’s 90 degrees outside.  Suggest it at a time when nothing else is really happening, you have a better chance of getting a positive response. Make exercise more fun than actual exercise. Suggest trying a new sport like tennis, bike riding, find a pool with open swim times in your area, go hike and area trail, learn to geocache, try basket ball at a near by park with hoops, try frisbee. There are so many things you could do and all the while be getting exercise.

Concentrate on starting out slow and don’t force them to do it, because they will never stick to it. I will admit, I was pretty lucky, both my husband and son just sort of followed along when I decided to make my lifestyle change. We have learned so many new sports and activities, and are so much happier because of our new way of life. Not everyone is going to feel this way at first. That’s ok. You do what you need to do for yourself and if they like the change they see in you maybe they will follow along for the adventure.
