Monthly Health Challenge: October 2015

Three more months to go before we again start a new year….can you believe it? As September comes to an end and we being October you sure can feel the cool, crispness in the air. Which for me means walking outside is coming to an end. My husband and I used to walk outside year round, in snow, on ice, and in freezing temperatures. That all ended about three years ago when I had a bad fall and needless to say, it was not my first fall outside during one of our winter walks. (I am not a good ice walker and WI has a lot of ice) After this we now rarely will walk outside after the first few snow falls. It’s just too risky and stressful for me. Which brings this months health challenge to be one of the most important ones of the entire year in my opinion.

October Health Challenge Is: Walk outside 1 mile 5x’s a week.

This is not a lot to ask. Your body will thank you for the exercise and the fresh air. And almost anyone can walk one mile without much effort. So this is the minimum I want you to try and walk….if you feel like you can walk further, by all means go ahead.

Good Luck!

Monthly Health Challenge- September 2015

If you did or tried last months health challenge you should be accustomed to having many veggies in your home which will make this new health challenge a breeze.

September Health Challenge Is: Eat 3 different veggies per day.

Many times when we have a vegetable at meal times it is the same vegetable throughout the day. Let’s make meal time a bit more colorful and have a different vegetable at each meal during the day. This could be as easy as carrots and hummus for snack, cucumbers and salmon for lunch or roasted brussel sprouts with dinner.

Or if you are really struggling to have a vegetable at each meal, pack all three together at one meal instead. Try roasted potatoes, squash, and onions for a side dish or kabobs are also a great way to mix up a few vegetables at one meal.

It’s fresh veggie season and soon it will over so let’s enjoy every last minute of it together.

Weekend Goals and The May Health Challenge

The weekend is here and I am EXCITED! I visited the doctor yesterday and didn’t exactly get the news I was hoping for but I still got good news.

IMG_0844

I will still be in the boot another two weeks. However, two hours during my work day and from the time I am done working until bedtime I can take it off. However, if we do any form of activity besides normal walking around the house, then it has to go back on. I did get the ok to do anything I wish with the boot on…hello trail here I come. Which means I made some weekend goals and hope to accomplish most of them. Take a look:

#1 To not over do activity with that ankle. I need to strengthen it back up. As much as I would love to hike 10 miles, that is not likely going to happen. I do plan to hike a little this weekend since our plans have been on the calendar for quite some time now, but all in good reason.

#2 I really need to even out my tan. One leg is white and the other is not. Since I can have the boot off for a while each day, this will be my time to marinate in the sunshine.

#3 Try out my new insoles when I have the boot off. I’ve been told this could be painful, but I am not too worried. I have been in pain for months, how much worse could it be?

#4 Enjoy my first campfire meal of the season. (Fire danger here is very high, this one is iffy)

#5 Spend some family time together. My son was offered a job last week which has him working in his field of photography almost every single weekend photographing weddings. This could be one of our last weekends together as a family doing what we love so I need to savor every second.

#6 Last but not least, work on losing the three pounds I have gained from sitting around unable to exercise for the last month. The night I came home from my appointment we actually took our first walk in a month.(with the boot still on) It was great!

I’ll let you all know next week how many of these goals I actually accomplish.

Now, onto May’s Health Challenge. I don’t know where last month went but it’s gone and that means we are ready for a new monthly health challenge.

May’s Health Challenge Is: Meatless Monday’s

That’s right, no meat on Monday’s! You can easily replace your protein with another form of food one day per week without a whole lot of effort. Here are some options to choose from:

beans and lentils

cottage cheese

eggs

tofu/tempeh

greek yogurt

avocados

peanut butter

quinoa

nuts and seeds

I am sure there are many, many more out there besides just these.  If you don’t think you can survive an entire day without meat just start out with dinner on Monday’s. Work your way up to an entire day by the end of the month. You can set your own goals and achieve them.

These challenges are meant to be fun and rewarding to us all when we work to achieve something we normally would not do on our own. I don’t want these to turn into something that we all dread and find impossible.

Let me know of any good ideas or recipes you come up with that are meatless. I would be happy to give them a try here with my family as well.

Good Luck!

February Health Challenge

If you recall back in January I said I would be challenging you all to a monthly health challenge. January was an easy one….eating two whole pieces of fruit per day. February is really going to be quite a challenge for some individuals but I have faith you can all do this for one month.

Forgo Fast Food For February is the challenge.

I can hear you all chuckling already but hear me out first. I know sometimes it’s just easier to go through that drive thru and grab something for the family or to do this during your lunch hour because you forgot to plan before leaving home that morning. I get it, life is hectic, crazy, and sometimes unmanageable. That being said, I also know that sometimes we are all just LAZY!

So let’s try and break the cycle of grabbing something quick before thinking what exactly we are putting into our bodies. When you grocery shop buy some grab and go items. On the weekends make ahead some meals that freeze well so you can come home from work and have some better options. Get up 10 minutes earlier and pack your lunch. You can do this.

Good Luck!

Random Ramblings/ Health Challenge Checkup

How are you all doing with January’s Health Challenge of eating two whole pieces of fruit per day? As for me, I am doing pretty good. I may have missed a day or two but some days I made up for it and ate more than two pieces. Ultimately, I would call it fairly even. I am really looking forward to ending this month and taking on the challenge for February. This one you all may find much more difficult. Although, that is what makes it a challenge and something to strive for.

If I have any readers following along that enjoy hiking as much as I do you may want to check out a book I have been reading. Hikertrash by Erin Miller is a winner so far. I can remember being in the same mind set as this couple a few times in my life while on a trail. It’s the perfect book to be reading so close to a big hiking trip for us.

Another thing you may find amusing is that the three year old I care for everyday keeps reminding me that snakes live in the desert. She thinks this is quite funny since she is well aware that I dislike snakes. However, she always adds that desert snakes are friendly. Like that fact will help ease my fear of these creatures.

Let’s move onto food. Have you tried the new almond milk coffee creamer called Califia Farms? I am a coffee creamer lover and let me tell you this is terrific. It comes in four different flavors, is low in calories, and will give you a good reason to get out of bed on a cold morning.

Well, I suppose that’s all for this week. Weekend plans consists of some gym workouts, menu planning, and good ole grocery shopping. Doesn’t it sound like I lead a wonderful excitement filled life on the weekends? Don’t get me wrong, come summer time and I will have every weekend booked so right now, I can deal with boring routine weekends.

Stop back on Sunday and take a glance at our menu plans for next week. Maybe you will be inspired to prepare and enjoy a meal at home with your family.

Have a great weekend:)

Happy New Year/ January’s Health Challenge

Welcome back…..Happy New Year!!!!

I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday celebrations as much as we did here. I have been doing a lot of sleeping in…6am is spectacular, getting in some fierce workouts, eating yummy food, and to top all this, we even had our son’s 20th birthday to celebrate. Christmas day was the best….we did what we do best as a family and went hiking all day. Our son had the best scenery to capture in pictures, my husband found a few geocaches and I was just happy to be outside together as a family.

Now it’s time to turn a new leaf and stick with whatever resolution you all decided to make for yourselves. Last year I challenged you all to get up and move for 30 minutes a day. This year I thought it would be fun to change the challenge every month to something new. Some months will be harder to accomplish and some months will be very easy, but all in all, it will be a healthy change for each and every one of us.

Every month I will update you all with the next challenge. There is no need to sign up, check in, report what you did or did not do unless you want to. I just ask that you have an open mind, try to create a healthier lifestyle and enjoy each and every months challenge with me.

Let’s start with January’s Health Challenge: Eat Two Pieces of Whole Fruit Every Day

Pretty simple some may say. Although, others may struggle with this like I will. I am not a huge fruit lover. I would much rather eat vegetables. However, I will make an effort to accomplish this and I hope you will try the same.

Good Luck!
