What I Am Loving Lately

It’s Friday again and I have a few things to share with you that I have been really enjoying.

Nature Box: First, let me tell you about a monthly snack delivery we have been receiving from Nature Box. We pick out five different bags of snacks each month on their website and they are sent to our home address. The guacamole bites are spectacular…I ate the entire bag myself. Shhhh, don’t tell. (I am the lucky mail retriever so I only show my boys some of the treats we receive:) Anyhow, they make great additions to a quick grab and go snack bag for last minute outings.¬† Plus, they have a huge assortment of treats to choose from, so you really never get bored of the same old thing.

Superfeet Insoles: I have come to love my new insoles. After talking with my doctor and hearing him suggest a high profile insole I bit the bullet and spent the money for some Superfeet.

They get wonderful reviews from fellow hikers and seem to hold up to some of the roughest trails which is exactly what I was looking for. At first, I will admit, I had my doubts. They were so uncomfortable. Every step was painful and I cringed for about three days. However, each day seemed to get a little better and by the time I reached my first week with them I could not tell I even had them in my shoes. Now, I cannot even imagine walking without them. I no longer feel my ankle bones grinding together when I walk and my hips(for some strange reason) no longer hurt me at all. I even bought a second pair to rotate between my hiking boots and my water shoes since I was told never to walk without firm arch supports in my shoes.

Garage Sale: I recently had a garage sale and I am very happy the pile of junk accumulating in my basement is now gone. HURRAY!

Panic Attacks: Call me a terrible mother but I was so thankful to hear my son tell us that he no longer can do hills on his long board. After last years accident where he spent the summer recovering from a head injury, a broken collar bone, and numerous road rashed areas, I was extremely thankful that his brain told him this is something that should not be attempted again. However, in case he would forget he does not have to look far to have a reminder that the blacktop is much harder than the human body! He actually had his collar bone x-ray enlarged, colored, and decorated his board with it.

Water Balloons: Nothing says summer more than a good old water balloon fight between father and son. No matter how old they get, they really never seem to truly grow up. IMG_1228

Active Families: I am so proud to say that we are an active family. Even though we all have jobs, school, different friends, and many other responsibilities we still find time to do what we love as a family and that is being active together.

What’s The Best Time to Work Out

What is your best time to get the most from your workout? Mornings or evenings?

I believe there are pluses and minuses to both. Frankly, as long as you fit it in, you have accomplished the goal.

I suppose this could go either way for many people depending on your family and your job. For myself, I would workout every morning if time was not a consideration. Right now, I split it into three different times during the day from Monday through Friday. Weights and crunches first thing in the morning, aerobic and more weights in the afternoon, and either yoga, 3 mile walk or 45 minutes at the gym after dinner. Crazy, right?

I normally take one rest day during the week. Although, sometimes I think I should exercise every single day, it just makes me happy. Rest day is usually my bitchy day. Odd but true.

On weekends I almost always get up before my husband is even thinking about awakening and go to the gym and get a great 1 1/2 hour work out which does me good for the entire day. I wish I could fit this into my weekday mornings, but it’s just not possible.

Some of the pluses I have found about morning workouts is:

*Workouts first thing in the morning will give you energy throughout the entire day.

*No excuse for not being consistent if it’s the first thing you do every day then nothing can surprisingly come up.

*You have a feeling of accomplishment and the day just started. Even if the rest of the day is crappy, you got in a good workout to be proud of.

*I love mornings because crowds are usually not a problem

*I find if I work out in the evenings, it’s much harder for me to fall asleep at night.

*Much of our family time is in the evenings, so if I can get in my workout during the day I don’t feel like I am missing out on family time.

Like I said, in a perfect world, I would workout every single day in the mornings. Maybe someday I will get to do this. Right now, when that alarm goes off at 4am, there is nothing that I would love more than to get up, go to the gym and return home from a great workout. So I wait patiently for weekends and get in my full morning workouts, and deal with the three way split during the week. Either way, a workout is a workout and as long as we all fit it in somewhere it’s an accomplishment.

Weekend Happenings

Friday night after a long week of work, and surprise landscaping that my husband decided we needed to do this summer, we went out for dinner. It was a new restaurant to us called Rustique Pizzeria that we actually taste tested at the Feast with the Beast Monday night.

We arrived and saw that they had a great outdoor seating option which we took advantage of on such a nice night.

Upon arriving, I noticed that almost every table had the same appetizer ordered. Pesto fries, which I had never heard of before. I knew there was no hope what so ever for us to order that, because my husband does not eat pesto. He claims it reminds him too much of the under side of a lawnmower!!! So, while reading the menu I noticed you could get a sandwich and add pesto fries for a small amount extra. (I have not eaten fries in years, but these sounded tasty and I love pesto, so I splurged) He ordered the margarita pizza, and I ordered the veggie sandwich and pesto fries.

Oh my, I was in heaven. They are everything I imagined, and so was the veggie sandwich. I even tasted his pizza, yum- yum- yum!

I told him anytime he wanted to go out, this would be my top choice of restaurants.

Saturday our son went sailing for the first time with some friends as a last hurrah before they all go their separate ways to college in a few weeks. Which left us alone. We decided to go fish Lake Michigan out of a different port this time.

Although we did not have any luck catching fish, the water was perfect and the weather was tolerable. No rain just a little chilly at times.

It ended up being a nice weekend, with some well deserved down time to relax.
