National Trails Day Hike-2017

Did you hike a trail for National Trails Day this past weekend? I sure did and it was exactly what I needed to recoup from the week and recharge for the week ahead.

I solo hiked a trail about an hour from our home that weaves through a water way which I thought would end up being a bit cooler. Ha, was I wrong…although for me, this was just what I needed, a good sweaty hike. It’s no secret I LOVE SUMMER HEAT!!!! Thankfully, I grabbed a cooler for cold water, sunscreen, and my summer boots before leaving home.

I arrived mid morning since I knew this was a hike just short of 4 miles and storms were predicted by dinner time so I wanted to be off the trail early and not later. Plus, I had a crap ton of other things I needed to get done at home. However, in the summer, my pleasure always comes before chores since summer is short and chores can be accomplished all winter long.

I love this hike since you are literally following a path right through Lake Butte des Morts and there is so much to see and explore on this winding path.

I love the peacefulness of hiking solo. You can go at your own speed, stop when you want to explore, sit and rest if you wish or just simply walk and let all the thoughts in your head roll right off your shoulders the farther you walk.

By the time I finished the trail it was 85 degrees, breezy, and gorgeous. I, just having breakfast so far, found myself hungry and very thirsty so I changed shoes and grabbed a snack for the ride back home.

Moments That Have Made Me Smile

It no secret that once autumn rolls around my mood is affected drastically by the thought of winter on its way. Having seasonal depression is rough but as of lately I have been enjoying the moments that bring me a smile.

Recently, I visited a festival with some friends and we saw some of the strangest art work I have ever seen. Imagine this on your back patio….

IMG_5316

Oh, how I wish I could have these bright, beautiful flowers around my home all winter long.

IMG_5320

I took a leap of faith a few weeks ago on our last visit to REI and bought a new pair of trail shoes. I have always been a KEEN lover but these Oboz were on sale and they had my size but they were out of my size in the KEEN style I liked. I tried them on and thought, why not. REI has the best return policy ever, so I knew if I ended up hating them I could always return them for a full refund. After wearing them for a few weeks, I am happy to report I am walking around with a smile on my face and my feet feel great. I am still sticking with my KEEN boots for the trail but for my everyday shoes, these will be just fine.

IMG_5305

In all honesty, this is not something that brought a smile to my face but it did give me a good laugh. While out with a few friends recently we came across a vendor selling chocolate dipped bacon. I like chocolate and I like bacon but mixed together….ahhhh, I was hesitant!!! Well, one friend bought a piece and we all tried a bite. For a whopppping $5 a slice (this is what made me laugh….are you kidding me….$5 A SLICE) I can honestly say it was not my thing. Way to sweet, way to much chocolate, and no way should bacon ever be combined with chocolate.

IMG_5321

However, as for these yummy little balls of chocolate….I would highly recommend them to anyone craving a chocolate treat that is actually healthy for you. These are sure to bring a smile to anyone that likes chocolate.

IMG_5298

And one last thing…..I often have moments throughout my day that bring me happiness caring for children on a daily basis. Yes, we have stressful moments, some meltdowns, and times of complete chaos….but….the genuine moments are the ones that I wish I could freeze in time. That innocence of ahhh and wonder in every child’s eye when they stand back and just take in what nature has to offer makes me smile. How precious life can be if everyone could experience it through a child’s eye.

IMG_5311

On the exercise side of life, steps have gotten quite a bit easier than when we first started training on these dreaded things. My hips, knees, and legs don’t ache for hours afterwards anymore like they used to. And I can say with a smile on my face, I actually think I may included these in our exercise routine even after our Sedona vacation is over with.

What is something that has brought a smile to your face lately?

Do you suffer from seasonal depression?

How do you cope?

Summer In My Eyes Means…..

Summer means something different for everyone. For me, it the BEST season ever. That being said, there are very clear signs that tell me when summer has arrived, officially or unofficially.

There are always a pile of shoes outside my patio door to trip on.

IMG_4155

We have sunscreen and bug spray in every vehicle we own.

IMG_4190

Our summers are very colorful and sometimes very expensive.

IMG_4170

Dinners outside are a daily thing.

IMG_4073

I spend 8-9 hours of my day in this area during the week. A place that we don’t get to enjoy half the year….our backyard.

IMG_4305

I bid farewell to the gym and do most of my workouts outside. I will, however, make the occasional stop in at the gym if the weather is not favorable for outside exercise.

IMG_4318

My husband always picks my favorite flower and brings them inside so my house smells like lilacs.

IMG_4302

Fresh veggies are abundant

IMG_4300

There is never enough hours in a weekend to fit all our favorite things in.

IMG_4183

And my clothes lines are always covered in Turkish beach towels.

IMG_4349

What is your favorite part of summer? (mine is tank tops and shorts)

What is your least favorite part of summer? (mine is that is has to end so quickly)

Happy Spring Everyone!!!!!!

Spring has finally arrived which means I SURVIVED ANOTHER WISCONSIN WINTER!!!!!!

It is always a great feeling when another winter is behind me. I can’t wait to go to farmers markets, see bright flowers, sleep with the windows open, have picnics, and so on. What is there not to love about Spring?

IMG_1761

I celebrated Springs arrival this weekend by first assisting with some yard work.

IMG_3719

Then we slipped on our hiking boots and visited a trail that is off limits in the heat of summer thanks to an over abundance of snakes. IMG_3729

IMG_3738

I went to lunch with some friends and enjoyed a healthy veggie wrap and pasta salad.

IMG_3761

Visited a “new to us” library for some audio books for my husband and some new story books for our spring break week this week. IMG_3721

Visited the gym for a workout with my hubby.

IMG_20151010_120644

And the rest of the weekend was spent relaxing.

What did you do to celebrate the beginning of Spring?

Loving Lately….

Another week has come and gone and we’re off to enjoy the weekend. With that in mind here are a few things I have been loving lately whether it be a weekday or a weekend…

Flowers are in full bloom everywhere: Nothing says summer more than flowers in full bloom everywhere you look.IMG_1763

Triscuit Thin Crisps Wasabi Soy Crackers: YUMMMMY. I am not a big chip eater but lately when we do splurge on a bag of chips we have not been able to find our favorite flavored wasabi soy chips anywhere. I think because the new line of this years flavors are coming out, they have stopped selling them…anyhow I was bummed until now. I recently saw these crackers and bought a box. Surprisingly, they are exactly like the chips just not quite as bad for us. Give them a try.

IMG_1757

Clean Public Park/Trail Bathrooms: Being female has it’s ups and downs. One of the biggest downs is that we are not as lucky as males who can basically relieve themselves anywhere on a trail. Yes, I know, females could too but it’s a lot more work. So when you are lucky enough to come across a clean park/trailhead bathroom it is quite nice to say the least. Some make you gag and just hold it until the next opportunity comes, some are so disgusting that I would rather pee in a parking lot(which I have before). And occasionally you have ones that when you open the door oh so very slowly bracing for the stench and aroma that most have, you are pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness. This was my experience recently when we went hiking at a nearby trail. I opened the door and couldn’t believe my eyes. It was clean, did not smell at all, and I think I could have even considered sitting on this throne if needed (although, I have never sat on a public throne in all of my adult life, why would I start now). Hurray for whom ever cleans this trailhead bathroom in the town of Maplewood, WI…..GOOD JOB!

IMG_1778

Whole Fruit Sorbet and Greek Frozen Yogurt: I recently found these in the frozen foods section or our local grocery store. I was pleasantly surprised to find them very tasty and refreshing. At a 100 calories each, not a bad treat.

IMG_1849Tazo Chai Latte: I don’t usually try samples when I walk around Costco, first I normally don’t have time to wait in line much less the patience. Although, recently this was being sampled and there was no line so why not. It took me about two seconds to try, taste, and purchase this chai tea. They had it mixed with milk at the store which was great. However, when I made it I mixed it with almond milk which was just as yummy. Add some ice and you have a wonderful, summertime, pick me up drink:)

IMG_1860

Still Finding Time With Mom: I love that my son don’t mind walking with his mom. We don’t get a whole lot of time together anymore with work, school, and more work but when there is time he don’t mind spending a little bit of it with his old mom. They say your kids love you, then hate you, then eventually come to be thankful for all you did for them later in life. I am not sure what stage we are in at this point in time, maybe a little of all of them, although when we are together its fun. Which means my plan is to take it for what it is at the moment and run with it…

Anything you want to share that you are loving lately?

It’s SPRING

I am probably the happiest person on earth today because it’s SPRING 🙂

OK, so maybe I am not the only person happy about this fact but I think we should all celebrate together today. Let’s smile a little more. Let’s take a step outside and take a deep breath of fresh air. Let’s imagine the sprouting of little green plants that will soon poke through the ground in the coming weeks. Let’s imagine the leaves on trees reappearing and providing us shade to play under and let’s enjoy the extra hours of daylight that are upon us now.

I am so ready for everything about this season. I already have a good start on cleaning the garage. Shhhh, don’t tell my husband. This is best attempted while he is at work:)

Hubby and I made a trip to a local hardware store to stock up on charcoal for grilling season. I can taste those kabobs already.

IMG_1515

We also made an extra purchase that will have me grinning from ear to ear this summer. My new lawn mower. There is just something about cutting the lawn that makes me so happy. Crazy, I know, but I enjoy it for some reason.

IMG_4024

No gas, no pulling a cord to start, no nothing. This is the model they had out for a floor display but we ended up getting the next size up that came with a bag also. I have never been so excited about something so unexciting. Now, I no longer have to run and get more gas because “someone” did not leave enough from the last time or they did not refill the can themselves when they emptied it!!! I also will never have to wait until there is someone here to start the lawnmower for me, because ours is too hard for me to start. I can just start mowing. Now, if only we had grass to mow….all things comes to those who wait. Right?

Hope you all enjoy today as much as I will.
