From Sunscreen and Bug Spray To Chap Stick and Hand Warmers

Yes, summer is no doubt over here in WI. I have traded my sunscreen and bug spray out for chap stick and hand warmers and I don’t like it!!!! I know I know, I should be used to this by now but it’s no secret I dislike winter with a passion.

Anyhow, I thought I would share with you my first walk in over a month in a forest setting that was on my own free will, not meant for any sort of exercise, and it was simply just to get out, breathe, and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors before old man winter freezes everything into a solid state of miserable.

We here had a rough week this past week. My husband had some nasty illness that really leveled him. He came home from work one day early to sleep, slept on the couch four nights in a row, ran a high fever with not much relief from any fever reducing medications, and hardly ate much all week. So finally, when he said he was feeling up to doing something, we took a walk. Fresh air never hurt anyone is my thought.

It was gorgeous in the woods. Trees were all colors and the ground was just as colorful. Never have I seen a purple mushroom like I found on todays walk.

It felt so good to get out and enjoy a few hours of nothing…..just nature.

It makes me sad winter is right around the corner. Although, like most things, it will pass. I can just hope it passes by quickly and with not much snow and ice.

Time To Catch Up

Warning: Long post ahead:-)

Life has been so crazy that I have been struggling to find time to blog. However, that does not mean I don’t have a ton of stuff to share with you all. So let’s briefly catch up a bit today.

I mentioned back a few weeks that we were headed out to waterfall hike. Well, I have 6 waterfall hikes that need to be written and posted on the hiking trails page and hopefully I will get to them before the snow flies but if not, winter is LONG and that will be something to blog about then. For now, I will tell you we had a magnificent time and while my husband and I ventured off alone leaving the photographers do their thing…we came across one of my favorite reptiles ever. I love turtles…even ones that bite!!!!!

We also had another monthly dinner out with my brother recently and it was his pick on the restaurant so we ended up trying Green Bay’s newest sushi restaurant….Sushi Lover.

IMG_9250

Oh my….I could eat sushi every day…..it was so darn tasty. I loved this place. Everything was made fresh, you can order as many times as you wish, and it is one flat price. My husband and brother can sure pack away their share of sushi…..and I had fun watching them fill themselves to complete fullness from about that half way point of our meal.

IMG_9249

Then we had our first camping trip of the fall season. This time it was only the two of us and it was so relaxing.

IMG_9254

He was in charge of keeping the fire going so I could stay warm.

IMG_9266

I was in charge of meals for the weekend.

My only request for the weekend was to relax, go out for our favorite pizza at the new location of our favorite restaurant in the Door County area which is Wild Tomato now open also in Sister Bay, and to go out just once for ice cream before the end of summer. All of which we made happen.

IMG_9362

We used to go out for ice cream all the time….heck, we used to go out for anything all the time…but since going artificial sweetener free for his stomach issues we can’t without causing problems. Although, since getting this all under control, it has gotten easier to go out here and there and he only gets a little stomach upset if we go overboard. Some foods and restaurants we have found are fairly safe for him to eat at…like sushi…..this causes little to no problems at all.

While camping we also got in a small two mile hike which was the highlight of the weekend. I love hiking and it makes me sad to know that very soon the ground will be rock hard and frozen solid for months.

IMG_9277

Then I had a mid week day off of work which I packed way to much stuff into. I had three appointments to attend and a date with my son for lunch at a new restaurant in Green Bay near his work.

IMG_9385

That evening my husband and I walked my favorite nearby trail to discuss the results of one of these appointments in a place I feel peaceful.

There is nothing like a beautiful sunset to reset my mind and make me come to terms with news I don’t like hearing. Although, as with all things, we will move on and deal with what comes our way.

In the food category the fall menu has arrived here in our house. Soups are being made, the last of the fresh veggies are being enjoyed everyday and I am even sneaking in veggies where my husband and son would least expect them. So far no one has complained and they have even asked for more. From salads, to veggies added to pasta sauces for the entire family instead of just myself, and even carrot muffins…..eating clean and healthy is getting to be so much easier.

And lastly, this past weekend I spent with a friend attending a harvest festival in Door County. I was not sure I could pull off another weekend away but when travel plans were set back a bit for my husband I went for it. We had the best time chatting, shopping, and of course eating.

IMG_9419

That should catch me up to date I believe. Eventually I will get to the details of those beautiful waterfalls but for now I will leave you all with the reminder to get out and enjoy life while it’s still nice. Go hike, enjoy the beautiful fall colors that are starting to appear, and breathe the fresh air……see ya!

UWGB Cofrin Arboretum Trail Hike

One of my favorite times of the year to hike is in the fall. The colors are gorgeous, the leaves rustle as you step on them, and the squirrels are busy finding nuts and burying them for the long winter to come.

IMG_5540

This weekend we ventured to the UWGB campus near our home to hike a few miles on the Cofrin Memorial Arboretum Trail.

IMG_5567

Today’s hike began just off of Bay Settlement Rd. and continued to Nicolet Rd. where we did a complete loop back to our vehicle. A small area of parking is available roadside near the soccer field.

IMG_5568

Terrain on this trail is a mixture of paved sections, crushed gravel areas, and a long section of wood chips.

IMG_5547

IMG_5552

We passed a few ponds and a small stream along the trail.

IMG_5541

IMG_5548

IMG_5550

Some areas were highly wooded and some were open to the blue skies above. Colors were amazing and the trail was quite peaceful with us only coming across a few people running or biking.

IMG_5561

IMG_5555

IMG_5542

We did not track our mileage on todays hike but I would say the loop we hiked was about 4 miles, with numerous places to cut off and shorten if needed.

If you are in the UWGB area and are looking for a nice place to walk, bike, run or just escape the public for a while, I would highly recommend this trail.

****NOTE: No dogs are allowed on this trail.

Fall Trip To Devil’s Lake State Park

This past weekend we decided to squeeze in one last over night trip to our favorite WI park before the snow flies. We hiked all day Saturday at Devil’s Lake State Park and enjoyed all the fall colors,

IMG_0070

saw a class of rock climbers,

IMG_0088

and we also saw the most families I have ever seen at one time on the trails. This family pictured below just blew me away. If you have ever been to Devil’s Lake and climbed the east bluff you can only imagine what this man was feeling when he reached the top. We met him at the top and he was HOT and exhausted!

IMG_0098

Check this out, a family of 6 did this climb. Mom, dad, two kids walking, and two being carried in back packs. I was so proud of them and they should also be proud of themselves. Their children saw something that most children will never get to see and it was thanks to their determination and love for the outdoors. Good job mom and dad:-) (and thank you for letting me snap the picture, if you happen to be reading)

This is an amazing park and now is the prime time to take the trip from where ever you live and experience the beauty of the fall colors. Our son loves this park, there is just so much to capture with his camera.

Family time is very hard to come by these days with work and school schedules making life so hectic, which is why we really enjoyed the time we spent all together this weekend.
