Workouts of the Week

I have decided to go back to posting what my weekly workouts consist of. Last winter I was writing about this on a weekly basis because, at the time, we were training for our rock scrambling vacation (that never happened thanks to a big snow storm). Ever since then I have had a few requests to go back to writing what I do for weekly workouts when I am not training for anything special. So by request, you will find my workouts of the week posted either on Friday or Saturdays depending on what our family plans happen to be for each week.

Here is this weeks workouts:

Sunday: Gym workout which was elliptical 30 minutes, weight machines, and stretching

Monday: 3 mile street walk

Tuesday: 1 1/2 mile street walk in the a.m. and 1 1/2 mile street walk in the p.m. and weights at home. I also had every intention of riding my incumbent bike although the batteries in the monitor were dead and I had no replacements at home.

Wednesday: 30 minute incumbent bike, weights, 1 1/2 mile street walk in the a.m. and 3 mile street walk in the p.m.

Thursday: gym workout which was elliptical 30 minutes, weights and stretching

Friday: rest

That should wrap it up for this weeks workouts. Not too bad if I do say so myself.  I wish we could have made time to venture to a trail instead of so many miles on the street this week, although it just was not possible. My poor ankles are so much happier on a trail. That being said, they shall be very happy with this weekends plans….which I will share with you all on Monday.

Have a great weekend.

Monday and Wednesday we were joined for our mall walk by our son which was a nice change. Typically he is at work, school or gone with friends. Normally our family walks happen on a trail somewhere surrounded by wilderness so this occasion was really out of the ordinary but very nice.

Life sort of got in the way of our normal routine this week. My husband is battling a respiratory bug which made it quite difficult for any gym workouts to be accomplished this week. We did however get in two good walks which still made us pretty happy. Yes, I could have went to the gym alone but walking gives me the same stress relief so I just went with it.

Tuesday we had to forgo all evening exercise to go visit my mother in law in the hospital. Thursday my husband finally started feeling a little better but instead of heading to the gym we did some of our weekend shopping instead. If there is one thing I dislike about December it’s the weekend crowds in the stores. I use up all my patients during the week with my kiddos which leaves me with none left for weekend shopping. The grocery store is usually all I can handle without having a meltdown. So I would rather squeeze it in on a week night and spend the weekend in the gym.

Friday finally arrived and we had every intention to make it to the gym until….my husband called his dad to see how his mom was doing after being released from the hospital. The news he received was not good and asked if we could forgo our gym plans and make a quick trip over to see his mom. Which we did.

This week was simply reality. Sometimes we need to make adjustments for whatever reason and that is what we did. I am just thankful I have equipment at home to still get in some exercise. I have hope that this next week should return to normal.

Sunday after our big shopping trip and a very long, uncomfortable bus ride to and from Chicago, my butt was dragging. I knew if I could just get myself in the front doors of the gym I would feel better. I was crabby, had a headache, did not feel like doing anything since I did not get to bed until way after my bedtime the night before(11pm), and had everything we purchased sitting on our table staring at me to put it all away when I woke up Sunday. Thankfully, my husband picked up on my bad mood pretty quickly and pitched in to help get everything done. Then it was all up to me whether I would attempt the gym or not. Which I am happy to say I DID!!!! And I was soooo happy, it really did brighten my mood and make me feel better:-)

Monday and Tuesday brought us a two day snow/rain/sleet storm in our area. Surprisingly enough this would normally just put me in a baaaad mooood but I was not really feeling too rough. I would not go as far as to say I was “happy” to see it snow, but either way I was not as moody as normal for the first snow fall. Maybe, just maybe, the Vitamin D is working.

Wednesday brought our first “mall walk” of the winter. Temps here have finally dipped to where I believe I could freeze to death if out for too long. I know, call me whimpy if you wish, everyone else does:-)

The rest of the week was pretty typical. We tried to follow our training plan as much as possible but I feel like we may have to change up the plan slightly. I may swap my off day for Friday and workout on Sunday since the weekends are when I have the most time and the gym is practically empty. We’ll see in the future, who really knows.

Saturday 11/8: OFF……but we walked for hours while on our “SHOP TILL YOU DROP” Chicago shopping trip. That has to count for something;-)

Sunday I awoke to both my boys gone for the majority of the day by 6 a.m. so I figured a good solo early morning gym workout would be a great way to start my day. I love early morning workouts compared to evenings so this put a smile on my face for the day;-)

This was an odd work week for me since I had Wednesday off to attend to a few appointments in the morning hours. Which then left me with half the day just for me. Take a guess what I did first….aaaah went to the gym. I know, pretty pathetic but it’s what makes me feel good. I got in a great workout, then met some friends for lunch, and just really enjoyed some “me time” for a change.

This was quite the week for me. Workouts were great, my ankle seems to be headed in the right direction with less pain, and we really put on some miles while shopping Saturday which was exactly what I was hoping to achieve. With our first snow storm predicted to start this morning, I am ready to change gears and begin our training schedule as planned this week.

Monday Motivation

I plan to make Monday’s all about motivation for the next few weeks. Research has shown that when you workout with a partner you feel this obligation to show up and get it done whether you feel like it or not due to obligation to that other person. I truly believe this is a fact. I know there are times when I just don’t feel like it and my husband will push me to just give it a try and see what happens (or vice versa for him) and usually the outcome is great. So, I thought by posting what I do for workouts every Monday may give all my readers the little push to just give it a try and see what happens. We can be like virtual partners. We all have busy, crazy lives at some time or another, especially with the holidays right around the corner. If I can motivate one person to get in a workout and feel the benefits, I will have achieved my goal. For the next few Monday’s I will post the workouts I did from the week prior which will keep me accountable and at the same time hopefully show you that you can and do have time to get in a workout.

Sunday 10/26: GYM: 30 minutes elliptical, 10 minutes ARC, free wights(arms) and stretching

Monday 10/27: HOME: 200 crunches, 30 minutes bike, balance ball and weights routine

Tuesday 10/28: HOME: 200 crunches, 30 minutes bike, weights and balance ball routine, 3 mile walk outside

Wednesday10/29: GYM: 30 minutes elliptical, weights(legs and arms), 15 minutes walking-treadmill

Thursday 10/30: HOME: 200 crunches, rake our entire yard, 3 mile walk

Friday 10/31: HOME: 30 minutes bike, weights and balance ball routine

Saturday 11/1: Aqua Zumba 60 minutes

I would call this a fairly typical week for me. Obviously, I don’t rake my lawn every week as I did Thursday but it needed to be done and it was a nice change of pace. As for my first aqua zumba class…..it was fun and also a nice change of pace. Although, I missed breaking a sweat like at the gym, I did feel it was a good workout just not as intense as I would have liked. That being said, I will see how the next few weeks go.
