It’s Time To Celebrate Daylight

Thanks to all that gave an opinion about where we should head for our next hiking adventure. It looks like we will be heading to the Shenandoahs and I could not be more excited since this was my choice from the beginning. If there are any others out there that would like to give us some pointers about hiking this area, please feel free to comment or send me a message…I would love to hear what you have to say.

Now, looking back at this week….WOW was it a doozie!!! I got in an early morning workout Monday at the gym before my day started. While there I did something to make my knee hurt the rest of that day. OUCH!

Tuesday and Wednesday we had nice temperatures but wicked winds that made me rethink going outside with my kiddos….they may have gotten blown away.

And both Wednesday and Thursday were crazy, happy and playful days which left me happy and tired by 7p.m.. However, I would rather be tired from happy days of work rather than tired from a stressful day at work. So all is good and I can only hope for another good week to come.

Which then brought us to Friday, which in our house is just a day we try and get through before the weekend. Fridays are fairly easy, long but easy, since I never need to prepare dinner on Friday and we always grocery shop Friday evenings to not have to worry about all that on the weekends.

Exercise this week was good….I felt good about what I accomplished and could sleep peacefully knowing I got in a bit of exercise everyday. Water intake was great, as always since I don’t mind water, and my joints felt good moving all week. Well, except Monday with the sore knee but by Tuesday it was gone. Who knows???? Here is a look at what I did for my weekly workouts this week.

Sunday: gym: 45 minute elliptical and legs workout

home: 2 mile walk with hubby outside

Monday: gym: 30 minute elliptical and full body weights, stretching

Home: 2 mile walk

Tuesday: 3 mile evening walk

Wednesday: home: upper body weights and yoga

gym: leg weights and 30 minute elliptical

Thursday: home: full body weights with yoga stretching

Friday: rest

Saturday: gym: 30 minute elliptical and legs workout before leaving for a girls weekend away……yeh!!!!!

Last but not least, I would like to remind everyone to change your clocks today. We may be loosing an hour of sleep but we are gaining an hour of daylight. Personally, I wont miss the hour of sleep….but I will LOVE the hour of daylight. Get outside and enjoy life while the sun is shining and the birds start singing again….Spring is right around the corner.

Eating My Way Through A Stressful Week

We had some things going on this week that have led me back to my old go to of stress eating. Although, I am proud to say I still fit in exercise, however, I am not too proud to admit not nearly what I consumed in calories this week. Uggg, what do you do right? Sometimes you just have to face the facts and move forward and never look back.

Anyhow, here is what the week was like between my four walls (which are getting closer together as winter persists or so it seems).

Sunday: rest…I had every intention of going to the gym but I was not feeling great so I decided to stay home

Monday: home: upper body weight routine, 30 minute recumbent bike

IMG_6145

Tuesday: home: upper body weight routine, 30 minute recumbent bike and a 2 mile walk doing laps at the mall

Wednesday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, rowing and some work with the TRX suspension trainer

IMG_20161125_0842439_rewind

Thursday: home: upper body weights and 30 minute recumbent bike

Friday: rest

Saturday: gym: 45 minute elliptical, rowing, and more of the TRX suspension trainer…which I am learning to LOVE!!!

Not the best week ever but I fit it in and felt good when I had accomplished what I accomplished. My only hope is that next week is a bit calmer and more on the normal, routine side of life instead of complete chaos.

One thing I am thankful for this week is that it is finally February….which means, even though we are suppose to be getting hit hard with a major snowstorm this coming week…..Spring is on the way. No one could be any happier about this than me:-)

Fitness and Food In Week #1 of 2017

The first week in 2017 proved to be a challenge but ultimately was successful. Having Monday off was wonderful which meant we could go to the gym anytime of day to try and avoid the crowd which we did with success. Tuesday-Friday the gym was plain old crazy busy so I avoided it like the plague. (We have inside information since our son works at our gym)

All my daycare children returned to normal schedule…..but routine took awhile to find once again. Plus, they all brought back a cold virus of some sort so we shared in all these germs as well. Don’t we all love the holidays?

Being it’s the first week of the new year and I had my hands full during the week with numerous things among a house full of children…..I am pretty happy with my workouts this week.

Sunday: almost a 3 mile hike New Years Day

plus a home total body weight circuit

IMG_6433

Monday: gym: 45 minutes elliptical, rowing, stretching

Tuesday: home: total body weight circuit, 3 mile evening walk outside

Wednesday: rest

Thursday: home: total body weight circuit, 3 mile lap walk at the mall

Friday: rest

Saturday: gym:45 minute elliptical, rowing and stretching

Meals this week were all eaten at our dining room table as a family except for one evening our son was gone. His work schedule changed with the new year and this makes dinner planning much easier. Plus, we all get to eat together, something we have not been able to do for quite sometime. On the menu this week we enjoyed sloppy joe salad with burger fixings. I simply take ground turkey and my homemade sloppy joe sauce and prepare the burger. Then I take salad fixings that would normally be on a cheese burger and plate them up with a serving of sloppy joe meat on top and drizzle it with dijon mustard. Yum!

Another dinner was Swedish meatballs over pasta. Super easy and a great comfort food in the winter months.

One night was tortilla soup….a family favorite.

And Friday we had breakfast for dinner…..which was homemade waffles with my homemade chicken breakfast sausage.

The next two weeks will prove to be an exciting time if we can pull off everything we have planned. However,  there are some big factors involved that could really hamper our plans. My goals are to stay positive that it will all work out, we will see everything we are hoping to see, and I will finally have part of my “life plan” in place by the time we are done. Now, let’s just hope the stars line up and it all plays out perfectly.

Feeling Healthy Again

You know there is something to be said about endorphins…..if only you could buy them off a store shelf the first time and give them a try I believe everyone would believe me when I say they truly can put a smile on your face and a spring in your step. However, since the only way to feel the effect of something so powerful is to actually get up and exercise, many individuals will never experience this feeling. And honestly, that is a sad fact of life.

For me, being back at the gym has been wonderful. It’s my shining light when the sun goes down so early every evening, it’s my way to feel as healthy as I can feel, it’s my way to relieve stress from a hard day, and it’s my way to just be happy.

Here is a peak at what my week consisted of:

Sunday: hike with the hubby….3.9 miles

IMG_6326

Monday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, rowing and stretching

Tuesday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, rowing and abs, ending with stretching

Wednesday: rest….errand night

Thursday:gym: 30 minute elliptical, total body weight lifting, stretching

Friday: rest

Saturday: 30 minute elliptical, total body weight lifting, stretching

I am loving life after a week like this. We hiked, I got in some awesome workouts, and I am feeling stronger every day. I finally feel like I am in a groove again.

My suggestion to everyone who is considering starting an exercise program of any type…..go for it…..you will not regret it!

Thanksgiving Week- Finding Ways To Fit In Exercise

Well, winter temperatures have officially arrived. We woke up Saturday morning to a covering of snow and quite chilly temperatures. So long 60’s, I hope to see you again soon;-(

Speaking of cold…..one of my dear friends sent me this on my email one morning. Maybe this means I am “that friend!”

(I will admit, this sure does look cozy;)

Since this was the week of Thanksgiving, things were a bit all over the place in the exercise department. However, no matter how little time I had, I still made time for some type of workout. Here is what my week consisted of:

Sunday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, stretching

Monday: 3 mile hike on a trail under the stars…..great stress reliever on a hectic Monday.

Tuesday: rest

Wednesday: home: upper body and abdominal workout

gym: stretching and 30 minute elliptical

IMG_20161125_0842439_rewind

Thursday(Thanksgiving): 2.0 mile hike with my husband and a friend

IMG_6264

Friday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, rowing and stretching

IMG_20161125_0846595_rewind

Saturday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, abs, rowing and stretching

home: 1.5 mile walk in the evening with my husband

As I said above, this was quite a whirl wind week. I was very thankful to have a four day weekend by the time Wednesday rolled around. We had so many things on the agenda and thankfully we fit everything in and still had time for fun.

Weekly Wrap Up and Workouts of the Week

It’s been a great week here at our house.

My husband is now completely off all meds for his back injury and after a few days of adjustment he is doing great. The only time he is noticing trouble is when he has his big, steel toe work boots on, he then still has signs of drop foot. Since this has been his main complication resulting from this back injury, he is now once again concentrating on working those certain muscle groups to help with his foot drop issue. We have high hopes that he will see improvement quickly.

As you will see below when you glance at the workouts I accomplished this week, I have started adding yoga back into my rotation. It’s been at least 6 months or more since I last did yoga and let me tell you, Wednesday morning I felt EVERY SINGLE MUSCLE. Ouchhhhh! I am really hoping to squeeze in a yoga routine twice a week to help with balance, flexibility and relaxation. Yoga is something I struggle with because it takes a long time for me to feel like I am actually working out, which then makes me choose something more high energy. Although, apparently my muscles need yoga because I had all I could do to lift and carry around my two toddlers Wednesday morning after Tuesday’s yoga routine.

Anyhow, here is what I did for my health and happiness this week.

Saturday: rest, traveling

Sunday: Ahnapee State Trail completed….4 mile hike

Monday: home:1 1/2 mile walk in the morning, 20 minute recumbent bike, stability ball exercises and upper body weights

gym: 30 minute elliptical, 10 minute ARC, abdominal workout and stretching

Tuesday: 2 mile morning walk, 45 minutes of yoga (OUCH….it’s been a while), and 3 mile walk after dinner

IMG_3267

Wednesday: home: weights (upper and lower body), recumbent bike 30 minutes and stretching.

gym: 30 minutes elliptical

Thursday: rest

Friday: abs and 30 minutes of yoga

Have a great weekend and a safe Halloween:)

This or That?

Good morning. Happy Hump Day! Let’s keep it fun today.

So many people either like one or the other of something for his/her own reasons. Whether it be related to politics, weather, money, location, and so on….everyone has an opinion. Which, personally, everyone deserves to have. Let’s look at a list of this or that and I will share my opinions with you.

Beach or mountains?

You guessed it. For me it’s mountains….all the way babe. I love the beach but mountains are where my heart is.

IMG_2118Hiking boots or shoes?

I have tried both and do own both. Although, due to terrible ankle strength, I prefer my boots for hiking. They offer the support to keep me stable enough to conquer any trail I please. IMG_0261 Morning person or night owl?

Oh gosh, morning person for sure. After 8 p.m. anything I say cannot be held against me because I will not remember saying it. When that alarm goes off at 4:15 a.m. every morning I am ready to go but after 8 p.m. you are asking for a miracle.

Salad or soup?

This is a tough one. I love both but have been known to eat soup year round.

IMG_4028

Chocolate or vanilla?

Probably chocolate…if it’s ice cream. IMG_2557 Treadmill or elliptical?

Ahhh, I’d have to say at the moment elliptical. I had a treadmill here at home for years and did not mind it too much but the elliptical is much more fun.

Sweet or spicy?

Spicy!!!! It’s so odd to answer that because up until a few years ago I did not like anything spicy. Now, however, everything is better spicy.

Shop or order online?

Depending on what it is, I would order online before shop. However, if shipping costs too much I will just go buy it in the store. The older I get the less I like to shop.

Pizza or tacos?

Pizza!

IMG_0504

Kayak or canoe?

Did I seriously need to answer this one? Kayak for sure.

IMG_1098

Hot or cold weather?

Hot and sunny is what I love.

Save or spend?

Well, I guess save. I have always been a saver although, as I age, it is getting easier to spend a little and enjoy some of it. We never went on big vacations before and now I am somewhat addicted to adventure and I really don’t care what it costs to experience it.

Coffee or tea?

Coffee

Fruit or vegetable?

Veggie lover is what I am. There are very few vegetables I will not eat. Fruit is good but nothing compares to veggies.

IMG_2716

Paddle or hike?

Saving the best and hardest to answer for last. Honestly, I’d have to say it depends on the month, temperature, and forecast. I love hiking in spring and fall. Dislike it in the summer months, due to bugs, humidity, and SNAKES! I love paddling in the summer when it’s hot and humid and the rivers are gorgeous. I dislike paddling in the spring due to roaring rivers that seriously could kill us if not make me freeze to death. And I also don’t like paddling if it’s overcast and rainy. Simply because sunshine is my happy drug of choice and rain makes my glasses almost impossible to see through and I am not able to kayak without my glasses on. This could also be life threatening:-) All that being said, if I had to give up one or the other, I would give up paddling before hiking.
