Following Doctors Orders…..Sort Of

As I mentioned last week, back on July 4th I pulled a muscle in my abdominal area and after suffering for two weeks went to see my doctor. He examined me and agreed at this point that I was right and it is what I said it is…a pulled muscle. And then he said to do the normal pulled muscle regimen…..rest, no lifting, ice/heat, and take an anti inflammatory. As always I left thinking yeh, whatever.

Which brings me to my gripe….I am sorry, but you know, medical professionals will ask you things like where it hurts, then what you do for a living, then examine you, and then tell you what to do without even thinking back to what they just asked and the patient then told them. In my case, I hurt here(showing him with my hand), I care for multiple children during the day telling him one does not walk yet, and that I have been taking an anti inflammatory med for two weeks! After hearing him say no lifting, ice/heat the area three times a day, and rest…..I simply left thinking ok whatever!!!! Clearly he has no clue!!!!

So my weekend arrived and I was bummed. It was gorgeous outside and I did my best not to lift, bend, strain and such the rest of the week. I even iced/heated the area in the evening for a bit before bedtime. Although, with the weekend here I could surly do as directed by the doc with no kids and all this extra time on my hands. However, I still was just bummed…who wants to sit home on a weekend with the sun shining and rest…ice…heat…and rest more. Not me and my wonderful husband could see it was killing me. He then made a suggestion and I was dressed and ready to go in minutes. I was still going to rest, get heat from above(sun), coolness from below(water), and I took meds before we left. He did all the work and we had a wonderful time.

We floated our first ever river in inner tubes instead of any other watercraft we own and it was FANTASTIC!!!!!

My husband did everything. I just needed to board my tube and sit back and relax. Which is exactly what I did and I must admit, I did it fairly well.

We saw eagles, fish jumping along side of us, turtles, and we even ran into some friends of ours on the river.

I never once left my tube the entire 3 hour float. This was a first for me and I guarantee it will not be the last time I do this. It was so relaxing yet we were still outside doing something fun. I did exactly as my doctor ordered. I rested!

This is one of the nicest things about WI…..water is everywhere and it only takes a short drive to reach it. Plus, I am married to someone that knows almost everything about just about every body of water there is in the state. Thanks honey for making my dull Saturday much more fun.

Work Before Play

We had the best weekend here in our area. It was sunny, warm, and just plain beautiful. I have been known to be energized by sunlight which drives my husband and son a bit bonkers at times, but this past weekend it paid off. We got so much done it’s crazy but so worth it. Every year around this time we all want to get out and have some fun after being locked up in our house all winter long. Although, I am a stickler to the rule of work before play. Which is exactly what we did this weekend.

Our chore list consisted of:

go to the laundry mat to wash all rugs and big comforters….done!

IMG_1851

shred cheese to freeze….done!

IMG_3679

swap snowblower and shovels for lawnmower and rakes/clean out the shed….done!

IMG_3675

wash curtains throughout the house, vacuum out both vehicles and get car washes….done, done, done!

place the order for wine slush to be prepared for summer…..done!

IMG_2725

laminate workout diagrams to hang in my home gym for future use…..done!

Our Play List Was:

Ahhh, all the work for the day is complete. Now it was time to do something fun. Originally my husband and I were going to do something together but it was so nice outside that we decided to go separate directions for a few hours. He went fishing to one of his favorite fishing holes IMG_2671

and I went for a solo hike to one of my favorite trails.

IMG_3689

I had been hoping all week that I would arrive at this trail and it would be dry enough to hike the entire distance. Thankfully when I arrived it was exactly what I was hoping to find…dry. It was also so alive with Spring, from eagles flying overhead, IMG_3701

to geese looking for open water,

IMG_3692

and caterpillars coming to life again after a long winter.

IMG_3697

It was so great to just be outside, feeling good, and breathing fresh air that I even sat on the bench near the end of the trail for awhile and just listened to all the life around me.

IMG_3696

It was quite the weekend. We accomplished so much, each had our own bit of fun, and even found time to relax and enjoy life before another work week begins.

What is your favorite thing to do when Spring weather comes?

Do you work before play or play and then work?

Weekend Highlights: Paddling Season Arrives

We had such a gorgeous Memorial Day weekend that we took advantage of every single second. Every single day was packed with fun. Which is probably why I find myself sitting here now typing and letting my body rest before the kids arrive in a few hours. It’s one of those Mondays (which will actually be Tuesday) I am happy to see come because my job is often easier than my weekend adventures in the summer months 🙂

We started off Saturday hiking a trail and picking wild asparagus. (No pics to share, I forgot the camera) Saturday afternoon was spent packing the truck with kayak gear for the first big paddle of the year.

Sunday we left home at 10am for our favorite river, truck and trailer were fully loaded and ready.

IMG_1709

We had two of our son’s friends join us, one seasoned paddler and one newbie. (Sister’s actually)

The water was still quite chilly but honestly, I expected worse. The young one’s were able to tolerate the water temperature fairly well and even got in a little body surfing.

IMG_4661

My boys wasted no time getting back into the groove with their play boats.

Although, our son did drink some river water twice Sunday by forgetting how to keep his kayak upright.

IMG_4650

To our surprise even the newbie wanted in on the surfing action. So, our son gave her a few pointers before sending her into the current.

IMG_4632

After surfing she even surprised us with her request to try the biggest rapid on the river. For her safety we sent my husband down first and had him stand mid rapid on a rock with the throw rope.

IMG_4690

She made it like a pro, the rope never left the bag, or at least for her anyway…

It was so great to be back on the river, paddles in hand and eagles flying over our head. We’ve waited so long this year to get back out there.

Monday brought a day of fishing for my husband and son and I spent it doing a little retail therapy.(shopping) Someones has to do it!

It was a great weekend. I hope you all enjoyed yours as much as we did.
