Weekend Adventures: It’s Just Too Hot To Stay Home

In Wisconsin you can usually count on a few days each summer that it gets hot….I mean really HOT!!!! Add some wicked humidity and that is a great combo for sickness and heat exhaustion if you do anything outside for an extended period of time. However, I am a summer lover and refuse to miss even one weekend inside. So I had to think fast and come up with a plan for this past weekend since it was hot…..added with the humidity levels we all had here and we were easily above 100 degrees. Thankfully we are surrounded by water and many times the lake shores are much cooler. So that is where we headed and believe it or not, the temps varied greatly from place to place all day.

First, we started our day at a new park we stumbled upon. Lakeside Park is located in Jacksonport, WI and right along Lake Michigan. The main reason for stopping was to use the facilities but often times these are the times we find the best spots with very little people.

IMG_1230

IMG_1231

A nice area to park, great playground that is well kept for children to enjoy, bathrooms, and a short walk to a public beach(no lifeguards….swim at your own risk). If you can tolerate the water temperatures of Lake Michigan this would be perfect since it was not packed at all. Truthfully, it was us and one other lady. Not bad for a quick last minute stop.

IMG_1232

IMG_1236

Next, we headed to our actual destination. Our whole goal of the day was to try two new disc golf courses in this area and also stop by a friends cabin if we had time before returning back to Green Bay. The first course being right in Jacksonport at the sports complex center. IMG_1239

We played the nine baskets here and then headed a bit further to Sister Bay to try the next new course I had located in the area.

IMG_1252

Both course were fun, cooler than back home temperature wise, and both offered us some time in the sun. I plan to blog about both courses in more detail soon so keep reading and maybe you will want to give them both a try if your in the area.

After two course of disc golf we were hungry. It was about noon and we had seen a wayside with some nice shaded areas to stop for a quick picnic lunch before stopping in by a friends cabin in the area. Apparently, we were exactly half way to the north pole where we were going to enjoy lunch….or at least this is what the plaque said that we found.

IMG_1273

We found the only picnic table empty which was perfect.

IMG_1274

IMG_1277

After lunch we stopped in and enjoyed some float time with our friends. They have a cabin right on a lake in this area and its was great to catch up about their recent vacation and for my husband to finally have some down time from all his work travel he has had.

IMG_1278

IMG_1279

It was a full day of fun outside. I could not have planned us a better day to escape the heat.

Time To Catch Up

Warning: Long post ahead:-)

Life has been so crazy that I have been struggling to find time to blog. However, that does not mean I don’t have a ton of stuff to share with you all. So let’s briefly catch up a bit today.

I mentioned back a few weeks that we were headed out to waterfall hike. Well, I have 6 waterfall hikes that need to be written and posted on the hiking trails page and hopefully I will get to them before the snow flies but if not, winter is LONG and that will be something to blog about then. For now, I will tell you we had a magnificent time and while my husband and I ventured off alone leaving the photographers do their thing…we came across one of my favorite reptiles ever. I love turtles…even ones that bite!!!!!

IMG_9201

IMG_9199

IMG_9196

We also had another monthly dinner out with my brother recently and it was his pick on the restaurant so we ended up trying Green Bay’s newest sushi restaurant….Sushi Lover.

IMG_9250

Oh my….I could eat sushi every day…..it was so darn tasty. I loved this place. Everything was made fresh, you can order as many times as you wish, and it is one flat price. My husband and brother can sure pack away their share of sushi…..and I had fun watching them fill themselves to complete fullness from about that half way point of our meal.

IMG_9249

Then we had our first camping trip of the fall season. This time it was only the two of us and it was so relaxing.

IMG_9254

He was in charge of keeping the fire going so I could stay warm.

IMG_9266

I was in charge of meals for the weekend.

IMG_9361

IMG_9273

My only request for the weekend was to relax, go out for our favorite pizza at the new location of our favorite restaurant in the Door County area which is Wild Tomato now open also in Sister Bay, and to go out just once for ice cream before the end of summer. All of which we made happen.

IMG_9344

IMG_9351

IMG_9371

IMG_9362

We used to go out for ice cream all the time….heck, we used to go out for anything all the time…but since going artificial sweetener free for his stomach issues we can’t without causing problems. Although, since getting this all under control, it has gotten easier to go out here and there and he only gets a little stomach upset if we go overboard. Some foods and restaurants we have found are fairly safe for him to eat at…like sushi…..this causes little to no problems at all.

While camping we also got in a small two mile hike which was the highlight of the weekend. I love hiking and it makes me sad to know that very soon the ground will be rock hard and frozen solid for months.

IMG_9277

Then I had a mid week day off of work which I packed way to much stuff into. I had three appointments to attend and a date with my son for lunch at a new restaurant in Green Bay near his work.

IMG_9385

That evening my husband and I walked my favorite nearby trail to discuss the results of one of these appointments in a place I feel peaceful.

IMG_9410

IMG_9406

There is nothing like a beautiful sunset to reset my mind and make me come to terms with news I don’t like hearing. Although, as with all things, we will move on and deal with what comes our way.

In the food category the fall menu has arrived here in our house. Soups are being made, the last of the fresh veggies are being enjoyed everyday and I am even sneaking in veggies where my husband and son would least expect them. So far no one has complained and they have even asked for more. From salads, to veggies added to pasta sauces for the entire family instead of just myself, and even carrot muffins…..eating clean and healthy is getting to be so much easier.

IMG_9390

IMG_9252

IMG_9377

And lastly, this past weekend I spent with a friend attending a harvest festival in Door County. I was not sure I could pull off another weekend away but when travel plans were set back a bit for my husband I went for it. We had the best time chatting, shopping, and of course eating.

IMG_9415

IMG_9419

That should catch me up to date I believe. Eventually I will get to the details of those beautiful waterfalls but for now I will leave you all with the reminder to get out and enjoy life while it’s still nice. Go hike, enjoy the beautiful fall colors that are starting to appear, and breathe the fresh air……see ya!

Girls Weekend At My First Bed And Breakfast

I had such a relaxing weekend. There is something to be said about no television, no phone, no internet, no laundry, no dishes, no meals to prepare, and no kids!!!! We all need it sometimes and for the first time ever I kissed my husband good bye for an overnight adventure with a good friend.

We spent our Weekend in Door County, WI, not too far from home but far enough to still be wonderful. We shopped at the many, many shops…everything from clothing to candy.

IMG_7096

We drank numerous lattes at various coffee shops along the way.

IMG_7144

Ate some fabulous meals at some of Door Counties numerous restaurants.

IMG_7110

Was not surprised to still find winter in full force since Door County is known to always be at least 10 degrees colder than where I live.

IMG_7136

IMG_7135

IMG_7133

We experienced a gorgeous sunset on our way to our bed and breakfast after a full day of shopping.

IMG_7111

And had our first experience ever with a bed and breakfast that really was the perfect place to relax.

IMG_7129

IMG_7107

IMG_7132

IMG_7098

IMG_7121

IMG_7124

The best part was breakfast was prepared for us, brought to our door, and served with a smile…..no whisks to clean, no dishes to wash, and no crumbs for us to pick up. Simply wonderful!!!!

IMG_7127

I arrived home 28 hours later feeling refreshed and ready to face another year until next time.

Let’s Go Paddling

Saturday my husband and I decided to paddle somewhere we have never paddled before….Cave Point County Park in Door County. We have hiked and explored here many, many times before but have never ventured out into the big open water with our kayaks. Seeing this beautiful place from another perspective was so nice.

We packed up our gear,

IMG_4353

grabbed an iced coffee for the road and

IMG_4351

checked the weather and wind direction one last time before heading out.

We arrived to see the water was calm and calling our names. Not quite calm enough for me to open the dry bag and risk taking out my camera at the gorgeous rock caves, but calm enough to grab a few pics here and there of the other areas.

IMG_4354

IMG_4357

I was amazed by how many other groups had decided to do this same thing. There were kayakers everywhere. From guided classes going on to private parties just out enjoying the day.

IMG_4361

IMG_4367

Thankfully our son was not along since we witnessed one of his biggest pet peeves ever. Two newbies who clearly had no idea how to hold their paddle. Although, if it works for them, then it’s all good.IMG_4363

Eventually we hope to get back to river kayaking before summers end here in WI. However, truth be told, this is the one thing that still gives me some pain when I do it. I am not sure if its the position I am in or the act of paddling but there is no denying its there. Which means Sunday then brought a day on the couch with my heating pad and some rest. Which is not great for someone who loves summer and just wants to be outside enjoying every last second. So whether or not I attempt a river with rapids and current battling against me has yet to be determined.

A Christmas Hike and A Big Birthday To Celebrate

Wow, these past few days have been so wonderful that for once I can honestly say I have enjoyed Christmas. Typically, the holiday is crazy nuts with places to go and people to see that there is hardly time to breathe in between. This year was so different and so pleasant in every way.

First, let me just say that the weather was gorgeous. We had no snow what so ever and I was one of the very few that was happy about this. Everyone claims they need snow for Christmas….everyone except me that is. I had to laugh when I received this in our mail box recently since this is exactly what I prefer to build a snowman out of also.

IMG_3124

Alright, back to why our holiday was so wonderful. We woke up bright and early Christmas morning to open gifts while breakfast made our house smell heavenly. Baking away in the oven was a gooey mess of yumminess we were going to enjoy before packing up to leave for a day of outdoor adventure. Here is the finished product before we devoured it without guilt since it was Christmas and all:-)   IMG_3135

We had plans to head out and do what our family loves to do on this gorgeous day…..hike. We packed up a quick Christmas lunch, threw our hiking boots in the back, grabbed our camera gear, made a thermos full of nutella hot chocolate and away we went.

IMG_3136A while later we arrived at one of our favorite parks, Cave Point. As we made our way to the trail we noticed that Mother Nature seemed to have decorated the lake side bushes and tress with icicles that were like diamonds hanging from the limbs. It was quite beautiful to see.  IMG_3137

IMG_3143 IMG_3171

We hiked along the shoreline for quite a ways enjoying the beauty of the day and the area.

IMG_3168

IMG_3149 IMG_3161

After this it was time to have Christmas lunch as we have had many, many lunches in our family…..right from the back of our vehicles. Many of you will probably think this is an insane place to share a Christmas meal but in our family, some of the best meals have been shared on the tailgate of our truck or from the trunk of our car. Anyone who has kayaked with us will agree and know right where I am coming from. I could not have thought of a better place to share this meal on this day.IMG_3179Then we headed out to another trail on the way home.  IMG_3182

The main reason for stopping here was to search for a geocache we have been meaning to get for sometime now. Although, as you can see the area is mainly what I refer to as SNAKE GRASS covered. Which means the only time this is possibly with me along is when the snakes are are happily sleeping away winter.

IMG_3184

After this it was time to return home, watch a movie and just be together.

The next day, Christmas celebrations were officially over since we now had a big birthday to celebrate. Our son celebrated his 21st birthday the day after Christmas which meant a nice birthday lunch out at his favorite restaurant.

IMG_3189

And some birthday presents all wrapped in birthday paper. It’s very hard to not forget a birthday when its celebrated so close to a big holiday. As his mom, I have always had the rule that if your going to give him birthday gifts at Christmas time, they MUST be at least wrapped in birthday paper. Thankfully, to this day, everyone abides by this rule.  IMG_3134

That pretty much sums the past few days.

Do you prefer snow on Christmas?

Celebrating Our 22nd Wedding Anniversary

I still can’t believe my husband and I have been married 22 years. That’s almost half my life. By this time we know exactly what each other really enjoys, needs and wants which made this anniversary quite easy to plan. I took the reins this year and planned an overnight getaway for us that was more about just escaping life and all the drama rather than celebrating anything special. Although, we did make time for a bit of celebration also.

The past two months for my husband have been a roller coaster ride with all the health issues his father has been dealing with. So I knew a night away would be so beneficial for him. However, because of the seriousness of this matter, I knew it needed to be close to home for a quick return if need be. The first place I thought of was Door County which has everything we love from water, hiking, great food, and so on.

Saturday morning we left around 9:30 a.m and headed that direction. He had no idea what was on the agenda except that we would be spending the night somewhere in Door County.  I handled all the packing and details, all he had to do was drive.IMG_2801 Our first stop was Sturgeon Bay and we did something that I would have NEVER done when I was younger. We went antiquing…..not my favorite thing in the world but I knew he would LOVE this. We stopped at two antique shops here and headed to two more a ways up the road near Egg Harbor.  IMG_2804

After some shopping we headed a little more north to our next destination to have some dinner. I knew he would be very happy with a visit to his favorite pizza place but upon our arrival we ran into a race event happening throughout the area which meant there we tons of people waiting at all area restaurants. So instead of waiting forever, we headed north a bit more and came to a restaurant we had never been to and decided to try for dinner.

IMG_2807

We were very pleased with our meal choices at Summer Kitchen. Service was very fast, friendly and the food was really tasty. And the best part, they offer a soup bar with every meal which is always a plus for me.

With full bellies we headed to our overnight destination…..Birchwood Lodge in Sister Bay, WI. IMG_2824

I made sure our room would have everything he enjoyed to fully relax for the evening. A fireplace, hot tub, and television meant he was in heaven. And this lodge had it all. Plus, I even packed a few celebration treats to enjoy together.

IMG_2818

When morning rolled around we had hoped it was going to be a much nicer day since it rained all day Saturday. We woke and opened the blinds to find sunny skies on the horizon. IMG_2821

We quickly gathered our things and went to grab a quick, hardy breakfast before getting to the last part of our getaway, the trail we had planned to finish this weekend. We arrived at a little diner in Sister Bay called Carroll House Restaurant and had a fantastic meal on their last day of business before closing up for the winter months.

IMG_2829

Unlike most restaurants in the Door County area, this place offered a wide variety menu at wonderfully affordable prices. After breakfast it was time to hit the trail. Along the way we enjoyed the views of the area.  IMG_2839  IMG_2834

We ended the day by finishing the Ahnapee State Trail, finding our #600 geocache and enjoying the fall colors together. IMG_2847

Weekend Snapshots

We had a weekend I dream of all winter long, it was 85-90 degrees, sunny, and absolutely gorgeous. We originally had plans to attempt a 6 mile hike on Saturday but when I saw the forecast I knew my husband would not be a happy hiker. So we changed plans and headed to a friends cabin to take full advantage of the beautiful lake they are on. Which then left Sunday (the cooler of the two days) for a small hike along the Bay of Green Bay where there was a nice breeze.

Here are some snapshots of our weekend.

Ending The Weekend Purchasing Our Annual Date Night Tickets To Feast With The Beast 2015

IMG_1641

I really do have to admit, even with all the struggles that have been thrown our way this summer, we are still able to have fun and enjoy what we can. We have really learned not to take life for granted and enjoy the moments we have because you just never really know when those moments will no longer be possible. We had a great weekend, spent it with some great friends, we were active, we were able to escape the dramas of life, and most importantly relax and let all our worries be gone for a few hours. For this I am so thankful for.

Did you have a great weekend?

Did you do anything active?
