Trading The Gym For The Outdoors

Lately, I find myself choosing the outdoors over the gym to get my daily workouts. As the seasons change I typically find this to be what happens, although this year it seems earlier than most for this to be happening.

I am not, by any means, a gym die hard. I do, however, like to keep a routine and try and make it there at least twice during week and twice on the weekends in the winter months. The remainder of the time I just find it more convenient to workout at home. When winter comes to an end, I still try and make it there twice during the week but weekends often are spent outside instead.

IMG_6433

That being said, I can’t help but struggle during the week with going to the gym when the sun is shining and there is so much to be offered outside to get in a great workout. Which means some weeks I don’t make it to the gym at all.

For one, I love to do yoga, weights, and stretching in nearby parks. Find a back corner where there is peace and quiet and you can really clear your mind and get in a good sweat.

IMG_4318

As a family we have come to love disc golf. It’s challenging, it’s often a nice walk through a wooded park, and offers fun while your exercising and you often don’t even realize it.

IMG_4984

You all know if I had to choose a great hike over a visit to the gym….the hike would win every time. Here in the midwest, hiking season is short so I take advantage of every chance I get to log trail miles. Granted, I don’t get to work every muscle group I could be working at the gym….however, hiking is one activity that’s truly brings me peace and let’s me know that I can literally walk away from life for a short amount of time. On the trail I can just let everything go.

Once summer arrives in full force, our paddles come out, get dusted off, and the water calls my name every weekend and even some week nights. From kayaking to paddle boarding, I often struggle with which one to do on which weekend. I know right….what a hard decision to have to make. Believe me…..it really is sometimes.

IMG_1651

During the months of June,July, and August I will be very lucky to touch foot in the gym even once. Weekends are jam packed with summer fun and week days are also jammed packed with other types of summer fun while I work. Caring for children during the days in the summer months is twice as exhausting as in the winter months for me. Winter offers the same activities in rotation. Summer, however, leads to all sorts of summer fun….especially when my husband and son are also home to join in the action. Things such as water balloon fights and critter hunting always add to the fun of summer.

Happy Easter

Easter has always been my favorite holiday. I am not quite sure why since we never really have a huge celebration or anything but maybe it’s because things are typically getting greener, plants are sprouting from the ground, and signs of life everywhere are beginning to show again after such a long winter. Either way, Easter is reason to celebrate even if it’s just hanging out and doing nothing but being with family on a relaxing Sunday.

IMG_7374

This year we had planned to hike a state park in our area for Easter but with thunderstorms predicted we decided it would be best to cancel. Although, we had enough other things to do to keep us plenty busy.

Speaking of Spring and Easter…..has anyone else found themselves reaching for the allergy medications and the kleenex box yet? I am quite lucky myself, with little to no seasonal allergies. Our son on the other hand has it BAD…and is MISERABLE!!! Along with that, all my daycare kids have runny noses and some sort of allergy/virus plaguing them also. So we are going through the tissues like crazy at our house. However, I am not going to lie and say I wish everything would freeze solid as a rock again….since it is so nice to be outside and enjoying the fresh, pollen dusted air once again.

Anyhow, here is what my week was like as far as workouts go.I started the week with a sore back and a visit to my chiropractor on Monday and also ended it on Friday with one more visit. Hopefully I will be pain free soon. Not much weight lifting was done this week but I still am quite happy with what I did do in the cardio area.

Sunday: 2 miles of disc golfing

IMG_7368

Monday: rest

Tuesday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, legs, and abs

Wednesday: home: 30 minute recumbent bike and 3 mile evening walk

Thursday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, stretching

Friday: rest

Saturday: 3 mile walk

You all have a fun and safe Easter….try and spend some of it outside if it’s nice in your area.

Geocaching, Disc Golf, Fishing, Hiking….Just Not Enough Time In One Weekend

Do you ever feel like you never have enough time in one weekend to do everything you wish to do? We do quite often…this past weekend was one of them. However, we did fit in quite a bit of fun along with some chores that needed to be done also.

First off, Saturday morning we wanted to cross off a few things on the to do list so we made a trip to a local retailer to buy 8 bags of mulch.

IMG_7338

While I spread mulch around our house my husband prepared the boat for the 2017 season and also pressure washed outside toys, tables, chairs, and high chairs from the long winter. This always brightens up everything and is so easy to do.

IMG_7339

Add in a few loads of laundry and some bedding that was cleaned and hung outside to dry and it was now time to have some fun.

We finally went geocaching. In case you missed our new goal announcement, we have decided to section hike the entire Mountain Bay Trail and while doing this we also plan to search and find all the placed geocaches along the way.

IMG_7348

IMG_7342

We searched and found all but two in a 4.5 mile section. One was not even attempted do to the width of the ditch of water that would have had to be jumped across and one was simply not located. The trail was quite quiet in this section and offered us some well deserved peace and quiet time.

IMG_7344

Oh, and without leaving out the best worst part of the whole hike, I can now add four more snakes to the list….these things literally make my heart skip a beat. I have a feeling it’s going to be a bad year for these little critters….or maybe I should say, a bad year for me since I seem to be the one to always find them.

IMG_7347

That sums up Saturday…. a productive, yet fun day.

Sunday I woke up later than my husband to breakfast prepared for me. How wonderful was that….I have the best husband ever, in my opinion.

IMG_7357

After breakfast we went fishing for a few hours on a local river. I am not the biggest fan of fishing but sometimes its fun to give it a try. Today was not my lucky day….I caught nothing!! My husband was the lucky one and caught two, both of which he threw back, but its the catch that is the exciting part not cleaning and eating of the catch.

IMG_7360

IMG_7362

After this it was a quick trip home for lunch and to pick up our son after he was done working. We had made family plans to hit the disc golf course for the first time this year. This is always fun since we normally are pretty rusty at first. Although, to my surprise I did much better at this than fishing. My first basket I achieved in two throws….with disgust from both my husband and my son. Ahhh, it sure felt good to throw a disc again.

IMG_7365

18 baskets later and it was home for dinner and relaxation time before the week once again.

I Am Not Ready For It To Be August

August 1st already….. where did two months of summer go????? I am just not ready for it to be almost over. We have had so much fun, there is still so much to do, and well, I am just simply not ready.

This weekend I informed my husband and son that mom needed a water break. We have spent the last two months every weekend doing some type of water activity. However, with all that fun comes a lot of work the day after. Beach towels need washing, gear needs enzyme treating, watercraft need to be restored stored and so on.

IMG_4349

In all honesty, I really got the hiking groove back after spending a week on the North Shore of Minnesota. Hiking gives me a certain type of peace and reset that no other activity can give me. Although, my standup paddle board comes in a very close second, hiking is by far my number one sport. So this weekend my husband and I did everything on dry land/trail.

First, we visited my favorite disc golf course in Kaukauna, WI. Grignon Park is like hiking while disc golfing. Of course its my favorite for this simple reason. IMG_4984

IMG_4985

It has some big hills to climb and half the course is thickly wooded which offers solitude and a challenge when disc golfing.

IMG_4981

IMG_4991

And no course would be fun without a water/mud hazard. IMG_4989

Then, later in the day, I finally talked him into taking me hiking on a trail I have been wanting to hike for a few years now. I will do a complete write up of this trail after we explore a bit more in upcoming weeks but for now let me say, it’s close to home and VERY PEACEFUL. Here are a few pictures from our 4.5 mile hike.

It ended up to be a great way to bid farewell to July 2016. As August rolls around we have many more adventures on the calendar. And as you can imagine, I will savor every single moment of warmth and sunshine this next month cause I know what’s right around the corner. I dread it so much so that I am not even going to type that four letter word that starts with “S”

What are you looking forward to in the month of August?

What is your favorite season and why?

Feeling Alive Again

You know those morning where you go to get up and every joint cracks as your body weight is lifted from the mattress and is supported by your skeleton?

Then you go to bend over to put your socks on and can’t believe how far away your foot is.

When all you want is a cup of coffee with a little extra punch.

As you drink that coffee wondering, why in the world you played so hard all weekend to return to the work week exhausted and sore everywhere.

If you have experienced that type of morning it simply means it was a great weekend.

I am currently going through that right now and I am so happy to feel this rough. It means I spent the weekend making memories that will last a lifetime.

It means that I have a week of recovery before I ultimately will do it again next weekend.

Those mornings, for me, mean I am alive and feeling wonderful.

Here is a quick look at what we did all weekend as a family.

Add in a few not so fun chores, like oil changes and yard work and I would say it was a very productive and fun weekend. Finding time these days to spend as a family is hard. This particular weekend we did everything together and it was great.

A Little Of Everything

This week brought a little of everything. We started out Monday with beautiful temperatures and quickly moved to cold, rainy and dreary. Mid week we were again back to tolerable temps which means we took full advantage of it all day by playing outside. And then back to rain and dreary once again toward the end of the week.

Add the weather to a crazy week of activities and events and I did what I could this week in the exercise department. Sometimes there was time and sometimes there was time but I was just too tired or just simply not motivated to do anything. I suppose everyone deserves a break once in awhile and this week I did not sweat the small stuff and did what I could.

Here’s a look at my workouts this week.

Saturday: 2.5 mile hike

IMG_3851

Sunday: 1.5 hour paddle, and 1.5 mile walk while playing disc golf

IMG_3842

Monday: 100 crunches, arms and legs routine, 2.5 mile morning walk

Tuesday: home: 100 crunches

gym: 30 minute elliptical, 20 abdominal crunches on the ab machine at 30lbs.***This is the first time I have attempted this since prior to surgery. I used to do 70 lbs. which I am determined to reach eventually again

Wednesday: 100 crunches, 2.5 mile evening walk

Thursday: home:20 minute recumbent bike, arms and legs weight routine

gym: 30 minutes elliptical, stretching

Friday: rest

Have a great weekend…
