A Trial Run Camping In Our SUV

This past weekend I threw out an impromptu camping trip to my husband where we would sleep in our SUV. Back when we purchased the vehicle the salesman laughed at me when I asked to see all the back seats lowered down and I then crawled in to make sure we fit in the back length wise. I simply looked at him and said, “I plan to sleep back here while camping.” My husband and the salesman then both looked at me with an expression of your kidding right? Ha, would I ever say something I did not mean…NEVER! So, a few months after having the vehicle my husband and I made a trip to the hardware store for a sheet of plywood and he got to work.

And then life happened and we never had to opportunity to test it out due to his back injury and then my surgery. Which meant, this weekend seemed to be the perfect opportunity to finally do so. Campgrounds are not full yet since it’s too cold, which meant we could easily show up at any park and be guaranteed a site without a reservation. After throwing a few needs and some quick food into the vehicle we headed out. We picked a state park about 45 minutes from home.

Upon arrival it was cold…and windy…..very windy. He gathered wood around our campsite for heat and I made up our sleeping area.

Then we did some exploring nearby, did a little fishing, took a drive, and came upon a new park we had never seen before. I can see us returning here when it’s paddle season.

By this time the wind was starting to calm down a bit so we returned to the campground and he made a big fire to keep us warm.

We later took a short walk around the campground and it was so great to see the leaves finally emerging from their pods. Summer is coming:-)

As evening progressed we started to get hungry. Our choice for dinner were freeze dried meals we had on hand from home that we quickly grabbed. Two, new to us, meals that we each chose were chicken and dumplings…super yum and chicken fried rice….again, a winner.

After dinner we relaxed by the fire and later turned in for our first night of SUV camping.Ohhhh, what an adventure this was.

IMG_7562

We learned a few things during the night. #1SUV camping is quiet…we hardly heard anything from area campers unlike in our tent. #2 you cannot unlock the SUV from inside and open the door to exit if the SUV was locked with the key pad…the alarm goes off(this was so funny at midnight of all times) #3 our sleeping pads do not stay put in the SUV which meant we kept sliding down toward the door. Frustrating, but we figured it out and turned the opposite way to sleep which was much better. This little transition happened about 2a.m.. #4 down sleeping bags and comforters are priceless when temps are in the 30’s and winds are 35mph off the Bay of Green Bay….brrrr!!!! It was freezing outside but we were quite cozy inside.

All in all, we were surprised we were not cold. We have one adjustment to make with our sleep pad but this is already worked out, I just have to go buy the item we are going to use. And I know without a doubt this will be the way to camp in the spring and fall here in WI. I loved not having the damp, wet, clammy feeling of sleeping in a tent. Plus, there was nothing to take down, dry out or fold up. In the summer however, I will still take my tent. There is nothing quite like falling asleep in a tent staring at the stars above.

When Back Pain Is Not Really Back Pain After All

For the last few weeks I have been suffering with some middle back pain or what I thought was back pain. After making yet another trip to the doctor, I now was told I have a dislocated rib. Fabulous….just what I need. No wonder it hurts every time I take a breath! So as you can imagine, I was told to rest, use ice and heat, and rest some more. I just had to laugh, me rest…can you even imagine? Ice and heat…sure….when I have time maybe. Again…I laughed even harder at this one.

Which meant after receiving this diagnosis mid week, my workouts became nothing. And to make things even more funny, we had already made plans for an trial run of sleeping in our SUV overnight while camping. And lets face it, if the good old doc would have told me that this would have been a bad idea I would of laughed hysterically at this one. So I decided not to tell him our plans….and continue on with this fun adventure. More on this later in the week….

Here is what a week of pain and rest was like for me:

Sunday: 3 mile evening walk and a nine basket game of disc golf

Monday: 3 mile evening walk and an abdominal workout at home

Tuesday: crunches and 30 minutes on the recumbent bike

Wednesday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, stretching

Thursday: rest

Friday: rest

Saturday:rest

On the flip side of things, I did not cook dinner one single night this week. HOORAY!!!! My boys took over the kitchen and wow, can my son cook. We had chili rellenos for the first time ever. YUUMMMM!!!! He did a fabulous job and knows exactly what his mom likes.

My husband made his specialty of bacon cheesewiches….which was one of his family favorites apparently, when they were growing up. Good…odd…but oh so good.

And grilled brats and sushi were all on the menu for the rest of the week. It was great to be able to sit back and relax while someone else figured out dinner for once.

Here to hoping next week I feel better and can manage workouts and lifting kids all at the same time.

Setbacks Are So Discouraging

As I mentioned last week, I needed to take a bit of a step back from my exercise routine with the small setback in my recovery. I stopped lifting weights for the most part but did continue doing some sort of cardio almost everyday.

As for my week, it was quite crazy. We had gorgeous weather almost every single day which we took full advantage of by playing outside for hours. Which made nap time for my kiddos peaceful and awesome for me to accomplish a few things during this time.

I was on the fence all week whether we should pack up and go camping or not since the weather forecast was not the greatest. Although, after some thought, I figured at least 50% of the time the forecasters are wrong so why not take a chance and see what happens. Thankfully, if we do need to sleep in the SUV, we are prepared after a little construction work to make this possible. I love that my husband just goes with the flow and makes the plans in my head happen in real life.

On that note, here is what I did for workouts this week.

Saturday: Gym: 30 minute elliptical and leg weights

Sunday: 2 mile trail walk

IMG_3686

Monday: 30 minute recumbent bike and stretching in the early morning

IMG_3043

and a 4 mile family walk in the evening where we saw so much wildlife.

IMG_3958

IMG_3939

Tuesday: 50 crunches and 30 minutes on the elliptical at the gym

Wednesday: 20 minute recumbent bike and floor routine with light weights

Thursday: floor weight routine with light weights, 1.5 mile walk

Friday: rest (no exercise but since temps are suppose to hit 80 today we will be running around playing outside ALL day which is far from rest in my opinion…..but I love it!)

If all goes well, I will be back Monday with some pics from our 1st camping trip of 2016.

Have a great weekend and Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there.

Currently……..

Life just seems to be so overwhelming these days that I often find myself wishing I could add a little more time to each day . Clearly that is not possible so let’s take a look at my life as it is currently.

I am reading: Free Country by George Mahood

I am eating: Bowls and bowls of veggie soup….my favorite

IMG_3777

I am trying to figure out: Who I want to offer childcare services to come summertime. I have been interviewing families for the past two weeks and now need to make a decision.

I am planning for: a trip I have been debating for a few years now and I have finally decided this is the summer it’s going to happen. I am getting healthier everyday, its not too far away, and it has everything we love….trails, parks, water, campfires, wildlife etc.

I am excited about: trying two new products I have recently purchased. One, my Cascala Turkish towels for the beach. Apparently these are fabulous, dry quickly, and are huge. So far all I can attest to is that they are huge…..now I need to take a trip to the beach to test these out. IMG_3382

The other item I am looking forward to getting lots of use out if is my Nemo camping comforter. I finally bit the bullet and bought one. Me and my mummy sleeping bag are not great friends…..I hope this is better. I will let you know after I test it out. IMG_3787

Making me happy: my husband who is completely on board with my plan to do more camping. We were so limited last year with his back injury that I am really excited to get out of the city. He has even started constructing an idea I had to transform the back of my SUV into a sleeping area if the weather doesn’t cooperate with my plans. What a guy….he would do almost anything for me. As I would him:)

IMG_3786

Looking forward to: starting to use some of my new workout routines. While I was recovering from surgery I read many, many, many magazines friends brought me and found some awesome ideas to change up my exercise routine. I have not been able to do a whole lot quite yet, but feel I am getting closer and closer to trying some out. This healing and getting back my stamina is much, much harder and taking much, much longer than I ever imagined it would. So this is probably the biggest thing I am looking forward to at this time.
