My Experience Eating Ethiopian Food For The First Time

The Taste of Ethiopia food truck was recently featured in a story in our area and it just so happened that both a friend of mine and I caught sight of this article. It is a food truck that basically gives its proceeds to feed and nourish little bellies in the Ethiopia area. (After it takes what it needs to resupply the truck with additional food that is)

In the story I read, the gentleman who runs the food truck along with his adopted Ethiopian children are the people who operate/serve and prepare the food that is offered. I really felt it was a wonderful story with a great purpose and to be honest….I am always looking for a new cuisine to try in the area besides what we are know for here in Green Bay….beer, brats and booyah…all of which I am not a fan of!

So this past week we made plans to go and give it a try at a local farmers market it listed as one of its serving destinations. Of course I was nervous since I had heard it was spicy. We arrived and placed our order after chatting with the owner/operator of the truck about what his recommendations were.

And then while waiting for our order we got to chatting and even had the opportunity to speak with one of his adopted boys from the Ethiopia area. Apparently, when they all first arrived here they needed to spice up everything we eat here in the midwest with their spice of life there in Ethiopia. This is where I got a bit more nervous that it may be too spicy for me!!!! And then our food was ready. OMG, it looked fabulous.

My friend got this sandwich with pulled pork, feta and this wonderful sweet cabbage relish on top. I got one lentil taco and the loaded nachos with pulled chicken and that same relish on top. I had never had a lentil taco and she had never even had lentils so we shared this taco and now we are both going to try and make our own lentil tacos. Warning: THIS WAS SPICY HOT!!!! Next, I tried my nachos and they were heavenly. The spiciness with the sweet cabbage relish on top was like a party in my mouth. I truly loved everything and would go back anytime.

We went back to the truck after enjoying our meal and raved to them how happy we were with this experience. Now, we just need to wait until they get too cramped in that truck and decide to possibly open a restaurant in our area. How cool would that be????

Have you ever tried Ethiopian cuisine? Did you like it?

Is the area you live in known for anything particular like we are here in Green Bay? If so, what?

Hiking vs. Walking

I have to get this off my chest and apologize to anyone who does not want to hear me gripe. If that’s the case, STOP reading now!

As you all know we are an active family. We often ask others to join us in our outdoor activities. The individuals that are asked are people we see often, enjoy each others company and typically have a good time together. When we ask them to stop over and share dinner, watch a movie or just to chat, they are all in. When we suggest a walk they start getting somewhat nervous, although at times, have joined us. But ask them to step out of their comfort zones and take a hike with us and excuse after excuse start to pour out of them.

Why I ask? I need some insight on this…please help me understand what is so scary about the word¬†“hike” compared to the word “walk”. It is literally the same activity!!!!

I have thought about this many times. What dictates the difference between the two? Mileage, shoe of choice, elevation(if any), surroundings, terrain, duration, etc.?

I am well aware that we live in Wisconsin, the home of brats, beer and cheese. This should get me some dandy comments butttt ….are people in Wisconsin that lazy?

We all wonder why our kids are getting larger with every generation that passes. We wonder why health care costs what it cost. I’ll tell you why.¬† It’s because as parents, we are not good role models if all we do is sit on our rumps! It’s because our bodies were designed to move, not sit still.

The weather is finally getting nice. After two weeks of trying to make plans for a fun activity with some friends that would take place somewhere other than a couch, I have just given up.

I’ve decided to toss out an offer and let active people come to us instead. So,if you happen to be in the Wisconsin area and are ACTIVE, let us know. Many of my followers are hikers and we would not hesitate to get together for a hike, paddle, walk, or anything else for that matter.
