August Already??? How Can That Be?

Where has summer gone? It’s August already I am not ready for summer to be almost over! Although, our August calendar is full and September is filling up quickly so maybe the best of summer is yet to come.

Alright, I know its been a while but life got a bit hectic once again. I flew solo this past week since my husband was once again on the road for work. Which meant we did all we could to get everything done that needed to be done and also spend a day together before he left. We decided to float the river once again since its relaxing and we both needed a few hours to relax.

It was a floating trip that paid off since he found a very nice fishing lure stuck in the bottom of the river. IMG_1398

Then the week happened and it was busy! Hence why there was no postings last week. I simply did not have time to sit and type.

Friday then rolled around and as he was on his way home making his way through airports, I was packing and preparing for our weekend. We had a day planned at a friends cabin that was sure to include water, sun, and campfires! I threw together a quick broccoli salad and grabbed the beach towels and sunscreen. IMG_1425

We left a bit early since I had my heart set on stopping at the farmers market near where we were headed. I bought a bunch of fresh veggies for the week ahead.

We then arrived at the cabin to find sunshine and warmth. This is not always the case here since it’s often cooler by the lake, but I was happy today was not one of those days. We boated, stopped at the beach, and prepared dinner on the open fire.

It was a great day. Weather was perfect, company was fun, and the water was warm. What more could we ask for?

Sunday was then catch up on chores day. We typically have one day of play and one day of work every weekend. I prepared baby food, veggie dip, and pre chopped veggies for the week ahead. My husband did oil changes and other things on his “Honey Do” list like normal. This week is jam packed with stuff. Our annual date event we go to is this week, we also have plans to visit somewhere we have never been. And believe me, we have been almost everywhere in WI….and surrounding states. So I am excited to explore more of what our area has to offer. Hopefully the weather cooperates and I will have something fun to share with you all real soon.

Have a great week!

A Quote From My Husband….

After this past weekend my husband stated this to me in these exact words,”I need to go back to work just to rest and recover.” Ahhhhh, a little tiny part of me felt bad for him but a really big part of me was thinking, what in the world is he going to do this coming weekend when we have three days to play outside?

It all started when I decided about 10 a.m. on Saturday morning that I was done with that boot! The sun was shining, it was hot, and I was determined to have some fun. However, I had another type of anchor(my husband) that stuck pretty close by the entire weekend to make sure I did not over do anything and reinjure that ankle.Quickly we did our chores around the house. He cut the lawn and I washed our car and my boot to be able to pack it away for next time.(Did I really just say there would be a next time? Gosh, I hope not!)

IMG_1037

With all our chores done, it was time to have some fun. We started with a two mile walk on a trail.

IMG_1001

It felt so good to have a shoe on again:)

IMG_1010

We saw so much wildlife and so many wild flowers. All the trees we walked past were in full bloom and the scent was amazing.

After our walk, we headed home for some dinner and then I told him I was not quite done. It was still so beautiful outside that I wanted to savor every second. So he agreed to play a quick game of disc golf with me.

IMG_0976

We then returned home once again and he was done. Nothing I suggested he was willing to do or let me do alone for the matter. So the day was over. However, my mind was already working on Sunday plans.

Sunday brought a little sun and some clouds with the possibility of storms in the afternoon. So we put it in high gear, we needed to get in some fun and exercise before the rain. We wasted no time. He loaded up our boat and I packed the cooler and we headed to the water.

IMG_1053

We returned from fishing/boating to originally take a hike along the Bay of Green Bay. However, after checking the forecast we decided it would be better just to walk in the neighborhood. We left with the mind set that I would try and make the three mile route we normally walk. I amazed myself by actually completing it without any pain in my ankle at all. This was a great sign for me. This is the same walk that use to put me in pain for hours afterwards due to my ankle injury. I was pretty happy to be pain free.

Upon our return home the rain started and continued for awhile. Which also meant our day was cut a little shorter than planned but we still had fun. I missed my jammed packed weekends of adventure and I am so happy to have them back.

This week will be a week full of walking with my kiddos during the day and working on making my ankle stronger with my therapy exercises and workouts. My hope is that I can possibly attempt my standup paddle board this up coming long weekend. Although, regardless of whether this happens or not, we have enough other events planned that I will not be disappointed either way. Let’s just hope that my husbands employer does not have a lot on his to do list come Tuesday……he will be ready to rest and recover for sure after I am done with him for three days!

Do you prefer relaxing weekends or busy fun weekends?

A Visit To Wausau White Water Park

Saturday morning we awoke bright and early to make the short travel to Wausau, WI for a day of adventure. Our first stop was at  Wausau Whitewater.

IMG_2237

This is a a great place to try out your whitewater skills, or to learn new skills from some very knowledgeable paddlers. Both my son and husband have participated in this coarse in the past and have learned a great deal of skills here. I also over heard today that we will be returning soon to give this another try.

The portion of the river is very popular when the organization posts that there is going to be a dam release for whitewater purposes. These releases last from 10am-4pm, and in this time you can register for lessons, participate in the recreational release, or you can sit on the edge of the river and just enjoy the show. There is a small fee to participate, although spectating is free. Today, that is what we did.

The nicest thing here for me, as a mom and a wife, is there is medical personnel waiting on the edge, on the rocks mid river, and throw ropes laying all along the edge of the river for spectators to pitch in if needed. Along with the medical personnel, fellow kayakers will also assist mid river when they can.

Here is the river, calm and relaxing before the dam release.

And during the release

IMG_2205

If you would need to exit your kayak anywhere along here and cannot make it to the edge of the river, there is a nice little lake waiting for you at the end of the whitewater. Feet in front of you is the rule, and enjoy the ride on your backside.

IMG_2202

Here are some pictures I captured of some experienced whitewater paddlers doing what they do best.

IMG_2233

Here is a little trick they all use to get more volume in their kayaks which makes it easier to flip the boat over themselves while in the rapid.

IMG_2240

Yes, that is a beach ball. They stuff it between their legs under their skirt that covers the kayak cockpit. Genius!

We also saw a class of mostly women taking their first whitewater lesson today. All looked quite nervous as they made their way down river to learn the basics.

IMG_2196

This is an awesome place for paddlers to try their skills, hang out with fellow whitewater paddlers and just have a great time. If you come from far, there is a wonderful little area that kayakers are allowed to camp for the weekend and it is literally right next to the rivers edge.

IMG_2192

It’s the one place that you can see a rainbow of colors and you don’t even have to look up to the sky.

Happy Paddling Everyone:)

Exploring the new river walk

Recently the city has made some very nice new walkways in our area and we had some time to go explore them. The walkway takes you out over the locks and very near the city dam.

IMG_0970

IMG_0930

On the overlooks, you can see many, many pelicans hoping to find their next meal.

IMG_0965

I must admit, I was quite impressed with all the improvements. There were alot of people walking on the new overlooks and all the kids were oooing and ahhhing at the hundreds of big fish below, swimming in the river.

IMG_0951

While we were walking, I mentioned to my husband that this would be the ideal place for us to live. There are condo’s feet from the waters edge and they even have their own boat slips. How great would that be?

We could stand up paddle, kayak or take the fishing boat out every night. Then he pointed out a big disadvantage. There are always alot of people around and sometimes we really search hard for piece and quiet, especially since we already live in the city. So, I sadly agreed, and besides, this is not our dream body of water to live on anyhow. It was a nice thought though.

On the way back to the recreational trail, I noticed an area restaurant that offers dinner on the outdoor deck, where you could sit and watch the sunset. How beautiful would that be? And I just love how all the old buildings in and around the area have renovated and helped make the area what it is.

IMG_0959

After our exploration here we headed toward the recreational trail which is connected a little further down. It is a great paved trail that goes on and on for miles. Along the way we ran into a little boy and his mom. The little boy came to us and asked if we could see all the,”fuzzy flowers,” and we said yes. I told him to see if he could catch one, and so he did. It’s funny how something that normally drives alot of people crazy with allergies can cause such excitement in someone with an imagination. It was cute to see him run around and try to catch the floating cotton puffs.

We walked a little further and my husband surprised me with his offer to buy ice cream along the trail. I would never pass this up, he very rarely will go out for ice cream. He ordered an orange cream drink, and me a turtle sundae, with no nuts(allergy).

We took them back down to the waters edge and ate. Then headed back to end our night.

When we got back to the car, I noticed a beautiful sunset. Which made me comment to him, its sort of weird. We now do things during the week. Before our son graduated high school, we always left the nights open for all his homework. Now, our son has a second shift job, which leaves us alone, and we don’t have to be home by a certain time for anything. It’s like we are dating all over again, after almost 20 years of marriage. Now that is very weird, but, very nice. I think I am going to like this new way of life:)

QUESTION: How did your life change when your last child graduated high school or left for college? Was it good or bad?
