The Rough Draft In Our Book Of Life Is Beginning

The rough draft in our book of life has begun and when I say rough I mean rough! Clearly, as you look back, the last time I blogged there was still snow on the ground. That was 10 days ago. Wow, where does time go?

OK, so without wanted to jinx anything here, I want to fill you in a bit on where we are since I get lots of support from friends and family that read here on the blog. I will admit, not proudly by any means but it is what it is…..here goes…..we have not eaten at our dinner table in well over 9 days!!!!! For this I am ashamed. Although, I have managed to precook meals in the morning hours to enjoy when we all do finally arrive home to enjoy them where ever this shall be in our home. I mentioned in the last post we have been apartment hunting with our son. Everyone…this has been SCARY!!!! Coming from a mom who does not always agree with her son…..we have been seeing eye to eye on most things lately and for this I am so thankful. Dad on the other hand is much more verbal and will tell him straight up when he don’t like something. I am more of a live and learn type of mom….however, unless it is just something I cannot look past and must give my input. Anyhow, here’s where we are with this….his one and only application for a place has been submitted and now we wait and pray. I am going with the hope of, if its meant to be it will be. Time will tell.

In between all the evening showings we had scheduled we took weekends and days to get other stuff done. That is when the tools for the other chores did not break while trying to get things accomplished. Frustrating I tell you….simply frustrating!

I have been searching high and low for furniture and home items for our son in his preparation to move out of our family home and this too has been a battle. Garage sales here are mostly on Thursday and Friday and by Saturday if they are still happening all the good items have been scarfed up already. And Saturday is the only day I have to garage sale since I work. Although, we have lucked out on a few items and dad is lending a hand to fix, repair, and create quite the unique DIY home decor for when the big move finally happens.

Also, with a well deserved needed break from daily life we escaped for our first camping…ok really it was glamping since technically we slept in cabins and not tents….trip of the year.

We were joined by my brother,sister in law, and our nephew on this trip for the first time. It was fun…we hiked the entire bluff lake loop at Devil’s Lake State Park here in Baraboo, WI and enjoyed the great outdoors.

We even dusted off the discs for disc golf while we were here and played a few rounds. When its your first time out for the season we found that things are a bit rusty and you often end up searching out your disc in the trees.

It was a nice break from our home life chaos. We had a great time, I was sore from the first big hike of the year until Tuesday and I don’t think any of us were ready to wake up and leave Sunday morning. Especially their pup, Coconut, who simply was exhausted by all the outdoor activity from the day. What a cutie….

Learning To Use Trekking Poles

My first trekking poles were given to me by my husband for our anniversary a few years ago. Now, some of you may cringe at this gift for an anniversary but I was thrilled to death. I am not the most graceful person you will find on any trail and my balance is by far balanced. Trekking poles have made life for me on the trail so much more enjoyable and have given me the confidence to explore deeper, hike farther, and go higher than I ever would have attempted without them. I am a complete fan of trekking poles which is why my husband recently bought his first pair.

His reasoning for purchasing trekking poles is a bit different than why I love mine. His is for help with his knee pain since his wife(ME) likes to hike mountains and this is what causes him pain. So recently we took a day trip to my favorite rocky bluff state park and he had his first experience with his trekking poles. IMG_5227

Our goal on this day was to hike up and down the bluffs which is a mixture of a few different trail terrains. Our first hike was up a gravel/rocky path on the East Bluff Trail.

Uphill the entire way to the top with larger rocks thrown in there for some fun.

After reaching the top we headed back down the Pothole Trail. This consisted of rocky steps all the way back down the bluff. This equals=painful on the knees.

Next, we took a bit of a break, had a snack and headed back up. Although this time it was back up steps, not a rocky trail. And after that is was back down a mixture of terrain.

He took many stops to adjust the length of his poles along the way until he finally got the hang of what he liked on which type of terrain.

After a full day of hiking a park we have hiked numerous times in the past and knew exactly what we would feel like when we were done….the verdict was that his knees were not nearly as sore as they typically are after this particular hike.

I can only hope they offer as much relief to his sore knees during our trip to Arizona…especially since my goal is the very top of a very well know rock! Which ultimately means, if we reach the top we will also have to return back to the bottom.

First Camping Trip of 2016

Hello, Hello…. how was your weekend?

Mine was fabulous!!!!!!!!!!

We (actually I) decided it would be a great weekend to go camping. Our son was scheduled to work both jobs and my husband and I decided why stay home…..so we went camping.When my husband arrived home from work Friday afternoon, I was packed and ready to go.

We arrived just before sunset and had almost everything up and ready by the time darkness set in.

We went to bed quite early since my husband was suffering from jet lag after traveling this week and we had both put in a full day of work. Plus, the plans for Saturday were to visit my favorite WI park and do some hiking. Our goal was the complete the loop of both bluffs at Devil’s Lake State Park….which is approx 6.5 miles.

We woke Saturday morning after a night thunder, lightening and big rain, that thankfully, our tent held up to perfectly. On the menu for breakfast was pancakes, fruit, and coffee.

Then we headed to the park a few miles away. Since we had been here many, many times before we knew exactly where we were headed. My only hope is that I could manage the entire loop, which would be my longest hike since my surgery.

We shared lunch in the middle of the two bluffs over looking the lake.

And completed the entire loop in a little more than four hours. Success!!!

After hiking we headed back for some relaxation at camp before playing a game of disc golf together on the campground property.

Then prepared dinner….chicken alfredo with broccoli.

After that is was a few games of cards, some time by the campfire and bedtime after a long and very successful day.

We had a wonderful time hiking at Devil’s Lake State Park and camping at a near by campground that has quickly become our favorite in that area. It ended up being a great place to unplug, relax, and unwind from a long busy week.

I arrived home and was happy to see my son planning to prepare dinner for Mother’s Day. How nice is that…….

Workouts of the Week

I had another great week of workouts.This week I will start with Saturday since I left that off last weeks workout routine.

Here is this weeks workouts:

Saturday: gym workout which was 35 minutes on the elliptical, weights and stretching

Sunday: bluff and trail hiking at Devil’s Lake State Park

Monday: 1 1/2 mile street walk

Tuesday: 30 minute incumbent bike and weights(at home), evening gym workout: 30 minute elliptical, 15 minute bike, and stretching

Wednesday: 1 1/2 mile street walk in the a.m. and 3 mile street walk in the evening

Thursday: 2 mile street walk in the morning, weights in the afternoon, and gym workout at night consisting of more weights & 30 minutes elliptical

Friday: rest

This week I took it easy a bit due to a sore neck which I saw the chiropractor for Monday and will again later today. Although, I still feel like I accomplished what I needed to for my health and sanity.
