Spring 2015: Devil’s Lake State Park and Glamping (glamorous camping) at Fox Hill RV Park & Campground

This weekend we visited Devil’s Lake State Park and stayed in a rustic cabin at Fox Hill RV Park & Campground. IMG_0894

I call this glamping (glamorous camping) since it’s not quite as rough as camping in a tent, but not as nice as camping in an RV or deluxe cabin with all the amenities. Yes, we have a tent and we could have easily slept in it this weekend due to the very nice temps but at the time of reservations (months ago) we did not know the weather and the heated cabin is nice to have in Spring.

Remember those weekend goals I told you I was hoping to accomplish this past weekend? Let me refresh your memory and let you know how I did on each one.:

#1 To not over do activity with that ankle. I need to strengthen it back up. As much as I would love to hike 10 miles, that is not likely going to happen. I do plan to hike a little this weekend since our plans have been on the calendar for quite some time now, but all in good reason.
I did accomplish this one. It took all of us to get me to the top of my favorite bluff but I did it and it was very rewarding. The combination of hiking boot, hiking poles, and a medical boot is something I NEVER thought I would see but it is what it is.

#2 I really need to even out my tan. One leg is white and the other is not. Since I can have the boot off for a while each day, this will be my time to marinate in the sunshine.
This one I worked on when I was able but you can still see a difference.

#3 Try out my new insoles when I have the boot off. I’ve been told this could be painful, but I am not too worried. I have been in pain for months, how much worse could it be?
I also did this one. I inserted the insole into my Keen boot and hiked the entire bluff trail with it. And when I am not in the boot it is in my other shoe as well. So far so good. I will write a full review when I can wear them both for an entire day, which will be soon.

#4 Enjoy my first campfire meal of the season. (Fire danger here is very high, this one is iffy) Done….my first roasted marshmallow  of the year.

#5 Spend some family time together. My son was offered a job last week which has him working in his field of photography almost every single weekend photographing weddings. This could be one of our last weekends together as a family doing what we love so I need to savor every second. Done. We hiked, sat by the campfire, did some fishing, played cards, chess, checkers, and disc golf.

#6 Last but not least, work on losing the three pounds I have gained from sitting around unable to exercise for the last month. The night I came home from my appointment we actually took our first walk in a month.(with the boot still on) It was great!
This one I am still working on. I don’t expect nothing to happen until I am back to normal exercise so for now I am just hoping for the best.

All in all it was a fantastic weekend. Weather was gorgeous. I was so happy to be back on the trail. We had some great family time and I came home pain and swelling free which was my biggest worry of the entire weekend.

Ok, So I Am Starting To Go A Little Crazy!

I almost have two weeks into this ankle immobilization and it’s starting to make me a little crazy. Not so much with the actual boot itself, honestly I kinda like wearing it. I am not on guard as much about someone bumping into it with the boot on. That being said, I am tired of sitting…..really tired of sitting. This toes over nose thing is getting to me.

Last weekend, I sat in the truck at a boat launch waiting for my son and husband while they paddled a near by river with their kayaks. Total bummer!

Then I came home and I sat on a chair talking with my husband as he worked in the garage. After this became boring, I grabbed my kindle and finished a book I had started while sitting on the porch outside. I did get up to make dinner…..thank goodness we need to eat. Then I again, sat on the porch outside to eat my dinner. After dinner it started to get cool outside so I came in and crashed on the couch, leg propped, and watch some television…..another total bummer. I swear I can feel my derriere expanding by the hour from lack of activity. Although so far, I have kept it together and not exploded with frustration…. yet.

As for the good things that have happened recently, there are a few. I hung my first few loads of laundry outside this year. I love fresh hung laundry! We ate our first meals of the year on the front porch again.

We slept one night without having to turn the furnace back on. Our temps all week have been gorgeous so open windows during the day and fresh air have been the best! Our landscaping is all done, which officially finishes the list of chores to do before we can enjoy summer. However, I don’t think getting into a kayak with this anchor on my foot is a good idea. And I have my first tan line of the summer. Take a guess where…..right where that boot meets my knee. Can you imagine what my legs will look like in another two weeks? One will be nicely tan and the other will be completely white! A fabulous thought that is.

Anyhow, a few hours from now another weekend will be upon us. Obviously, nothing too exciting here is planned but I sure hope you all find something fun to do.

A Little Of Everything: MRI, Disc Golf, Sale,Workouts, Birthdays….

Hi, how was your weekend?

Mine was a bit crazy. Not overwhelming just crazy.

First let me update you on where I am with that ankle of mine that has been giving me pain since last August. After seeing a doctor last week I am now awaiting an appointment for a MRI of this ankle. Doc seems to think that I may have a piece of bone/cartilage floating around causing me such agony. As for repairing this problem if he is correct, well, that is to be discussed in more detail at that time. I suppose it all depends on recovery time for me. I have big plans coming up and I need to be able to rely on that ankle. Which right now I can although, I suffer the consequences later on. So in other words this topic is “to be continued” after I get some definite results.

Now back to the weekend. My son and I found time to clean his room and rearrange the furniture. During this cleaning frenzy he came up with even more junk that is being contributed to a garage sale we are hoping to have this summer, which made me very happy. I am not a pack rat which means it’s not hard at all for me to throw things in the sale pile. My son is not too bad with this either but my husband is the worst. He thinks at some time in his lifetime he may be able to use this or that and it drives me insane.

Saturday we actually had plans to do a few chores and then take a trip to the gym for a workout. We have not been to the gym in over two weeks. Instead we have been walking outside every night since the weather has been tolerable. It was suppose to be cold and miserable the entire weekend which turned out to be very wrong. By mid afternoon the sun was high in the sky and we just could not see spending a nice sunny day in a sweaty gym so we contacted our neighbor and all went disc golfing. The four of us dodged a few mud puddles( water hazards) and really had a good time. None of us were all that rusty which is always a nice surprise after a long winter.

After disc golf the sun was still high in the sky and we just could not see wasting a single moment of it, so we dropped off our son and neighbor at home and continued on to the Mountain Bay Trail for a two mile walk together.

Sunday brought us clouds, rain, and windy conditions. Although, that was ok, it gave us no reason what so ever not to make it to the gym on that day. So we woke up and my husband made us french toast, cinnamon apples, and coffee. After breakfast we were off the the gym for a wonderful workout together. It felt so good to be back, but surprisingly I felt no guilt about not being there for awhile. I knew I had not been just sitting back being lazy. I have still been working out daily, walking and/or hiking on weekends. It was just a nice change of pace. We hope to possibly start walking to the gym from our home, doing our weight lifting routine and then walking back. This way we each get a little of what we love to do without sacrificing one thing for another.

Sunday also was my husbands birthday. We celebrated with a nice lunch out as a family and then it was one of those days where cuddling on the couch just seemed appropriate since it was dreary, cold, and rainy outside. It was a great way to end a very nice weekend.

Some Things Weighing On My Mind Lately

I have had some issues that have been weighing on my mind lately and I think I am getting a grip on them one by one. Here are a few and the solution I have taken to solve them.

*My afternoon workout routine is not happening with two infants! This for me is tragic to say the least. I live to exercise. It’s not an obsession by any means but more of a release and a way to relax. Recently I started caring for two infants and sleep schedules are all over the place.(As they should be with infants) Yes, I could workout while they are awake but then I don’t feel as if I am doing my job which is caring for them and entertaining their little minds. So I have decided to get in my normal afternoon routine of a half hour cardio and some weight lifting in the early morning before anyone arrives and right after my husband leaves for work. We are talking by 4:50 a.m. I am working out. Surprisingly it has not been too bad. It’s been quiet, relaxing, and honestly somewhat serene. I do hope eventually I can get everyone back on our normal afternoon schedule but for now I really think this is going to work best for all of us.

*Spending money on bear spray that could ultimately never be used. Recently I made a few calls about a back country hiking trip my husband and I have been planning. I received some really good tips and information from a park ranger that made us rethink what we needed to carry while hiking in this area. Typically we do carry a small hand held pepper spray for protection on the trails we hike. Ironically, not so much for animals but to be used on anything.(There are weirdos everywhere). After speaking with the park ranger he advised us to invest in a can of bear spray for this area we plan to hike. I told my husband and recently while shopping we located this type of protection. I (being the frugal person I am) almost sh*t when I saw the price tag. For $50 you can buy a can of bear spray with a holster to easily attach it to yourself or your backpack in the event you would come across a bear in the wilderness. I really had trouble spending this kind of cash for something that could literally never get used or could expire before it’s ever needed. Then my husband mentioned that he would rather carry this than a firearm (which I totally agree), and that $50 is cheap when it could save our lives. I had to agree with that too. After thinking about it for a while, it did make sense.

*Ankle pain is still bothering me. If you are a follower you know I have been dealing with a sore ankle for a very long time now. After kicking a rock in the river mid summer last year while portaging I have had this pain. It has gotten a lot better and the ankle swelling has actually subsided unless I spend hours on my feet, walk many miles or hike without my boots. Now the only real time I have pain is when it is bent in a certain direction. When this happens, the pain is horrendous……like tears in my eyes painful. After trying ice, heat, ankle wraps, water therapy, compression socks, and rest I have finally decided to see an orthopedic specialist this week. Enough is enough, I am done with this pain. I am not a doctor fan what so ever, but I feel in my mind it has been long enough and I have done all I can do. So hopefully by the end of the week I will have an answer and a plan to be pain free soon.

*My husbands birthday gift. It’s almost that time of year again, my husbands birthday. We are at the age now that when we want something we just go out and get it so I never know what to buy him for a gift. This year I searched hard and was coming up with nothing. Until I was actually given an idea from a friend and did some research and found the perfect gift. I would love to tell you all but sometimes he reads this so I can’t just yet. I can say, I think he’s really going to like it and I am happy I have another year before I need to search again:)

*Where to go for Easter? Every year we try and share Easter together somewhere special. This year we have not come up with a plan quite yet and we don’t even have any ideas.

*Section Hiking. I have been toying with the idea of trying to section hike the Pacific Crest Trail or the Appalachian Trail. I have been researching for weeks and really think this is going to be a goal in the near future. I mentioned it to my husband and to my surprise he is all for the idea. Does anyone have any advice for us? Do you like one trail more than the other? Let me know what you think.

Is there anything weighing on your mind? Do you want to talk about it?

Get Up and Move Update- October

It’s the end of October and we are almost finished with this years commitment of moving our bodies 30 minutes a day. I must admit, nothing is really going to change for me once January comes but for some of you moving all year will be a wonderful, healthy success you should all be very proud of.

Let’s see here, October for us has been quite busy but not pain free for me by any means. I mentioned that I have been dealing with some ankle pain for the past few months. Ultimately, that did not stop me from doing many of the things I love to do. My family made the entire west and east bluff loop at Devil’s Lake State Park a few weeks ago and it was amazing. Five hours of hiking happiness;-)

The next weekend I participated in a breast cancer walk which was three miles.

We have been getting back into our gym routine slowly and still making time for nightly walks when I am able to withstand the pain in my ankle.

And by no means have my afternoon workouts been effected, I still do this every day. I find it relieves morning stress and gives me the energy to make it through the afternoons.

So all in all, the month of October has been productive considering my ailment of a sore ankle. With the time change and less hours of daylight, I plan to really get back to the gym in the next month since walking in darkness is not one of my favorite things to do. Plus, we are working on finalizing our training plan to be ready for our vacation that is coming up.

Share with me what you did this month to keep healthy and active. I would love to hear from you.

Listening To My Body Is Not Always Easy

Happy Friday everyone….it has been a gorgeous sunny week here in Green Bay and we have taken full advantage of every second, which is why I have not blogged since Monday, sorry!

With October upon us I must say it’s getting a little cold for my blood to spend a great deal of time outdoors but I am still savoring the moments without a winter jacket, hat, and scarves. I have broke out my gloves but I don’t mind them as much. I do have to admit, I have been taking it easy on the workouts lately due to some ankle issues that have decided to haunt me. That being said, I have still made it to the gym at least twice a week and we still take a short daily walk every morning. Our evening walk of three miles has been what has suffered the most. If I find myself chasing the kids all day I have been opting out of pushing it further at night with a walk. Although, if my pain level is still tolerable by dinner then we take it slow and easy. I have been wrapping it and icing it as much as possible but that is nearly impossible during working hours. So all in all, I could be doing less to hurt less but for my mental health, I need to exercise to tolerate everything else life throws my way, so I live with the pain.

Anyhow let’s move on. We made our first batch of pumpkin muffins this week and they were all gone in two days. Yes, 12 muffins in two days, gone. Unbelievable! Everyone loved them, obviously.

Our son has started creating his website to promote his photography and it is coming along beautifully. He is loving his photography classes and is turning into quite the busy person between work, school, and photo shoots for family and friends. It’s simply amazing what he finds to capture with his camera. He has mentioned that when he is done with his website I will be allowed to post a link for all my readers, so be watching for this in the near future.

This weekend we have some spectacular weather predicted and I can not wait to get out and soak up some sunshine. There has been talk of maybe taking the fishing boat out one last time before storing it for the winter. We may sneak in a hike depending on how my ankle feels or even possibly a game of disc golf somewhere. Who really knows at this point except that I am sure we will find something to do that is fun in the outdoors.

Have a great weekend everyone;-)
