Feeling Healthy Again

You know there is something to be said about endorphins…..if only you could buy them off a store shelf the first time and give them a try I believe everyone would believe me when I say they truly can put a smile on your face and a spring in your step. However, since the only way to feel the effect of something so powerful is to actually get up and exercise, many individuals will never experience this feeling. And honestly, that is a sad fact of life.

For me, being back at the gym has been wonderful. It’s my shining light when the sun goes down so early every evening, it’s my way to feel as healthy as I can feel, it’s my way to relieve stress from a hard day, and it’s my way to just be happy.

Here is a peak at what my week consisted of:

Sunday: hike with the hubby….3.9 miles

Monday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, rowing and stretching

Tuesday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, rowing and abs, ending with stretching

Wednesday: rest….errand night

Thursday:gym: 30 minute elliptical, total body weight lifting, stretching

Friday: rest

Saturday: 30 minute elliptical, total body weight lifting, stretching

I am loving life after a week like this. We hiked, I got in some awesome workouts, and I am feeling stronger every day. I finally feel like I am in a groove again.

My suggestion to everyone who is considering starting an exercise program of any type…..go for it…..you will not regret it!

An Awesome Week And An Even Better Weekend To Come

What an AWESOME week!!!!!!!!!

I finally made it to the gym one night after work which is a miracle in itself. For some reason I just can’t find the energy to keep me going after a long day but I finally think I may be getting some of it back. I am not going to lie and say I was not completely exhausted after getting up at 4a.m., working 10.5 hours chasing kids outside all day, then making dinner, and everything else in between, before making a trip to the gym Tuesday night. Truthfully, I was pretty thankful we live so close to our gym  because driving home a good distance would have been a chore. However, I made it, I had a great workout, and I was proud.

So here is a glance of what my workouts for the week ended up looking like:

Saturday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, rowing

home: 1 mile evening walk outside

Sunday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, rowing and legs, and 12 ab crunches!!!!

****A week go I attempted a crunch and had immediate pain. Today I did 12 before I had pain. This, to me, is quite depressing since before surgery I used to do 200 a day. My husband on the other hand, says I should be happy with 12 since a week ago I could not even do one. I guess he’s right, but for anyone who exercises to the extent I do, this is still depressing.

Monday: recumbent bike 30 minutes, 20 ab crunches, 1.5 mile morning walk, 3 mile evening walk

Tuesday: home:50 ab crunches…..YEHHHHH!, 2.5 mile morning walk

gym: 30 minute elliptical, rowing, and lower body

Wednesday: 100 crunches…wow I am really making progress on these baby!

1.5 mile evening walk

Thursday: arms and ab routine, 2.5 mile morning walk, 3 mile evening walk

Friday: rest

As for our weekend………OMG where do I start. It is finally going to be gorgeous here in WI and I plan to take full advantage of it. I could wash vehicles, hang bedding outside, clean up our outdoor play toys, go hiking, maybe……..just maybe consider a small paddle in our kayaks, disc golf, geocache or simply just sit on the porch and enjoy the warmth and sunshine. So many choices that I have no idea how I will choose.

Have you ever had open abdominal surgery? If so, how long did it take you to get back to doing abdominal workouts?

How do you choose what fun activity to do first when the weather warms up in Spring?

This Too Shall Pass……

This week started out pretty rough. Let’s just say I could not keep up to all the runny noses I had in the house, my own throat started feeling rough, and really none of us were free of some nasty bug that entered our bodies.

And then it happened……..a major snow storm mid week!!!!!!! Yes, every pile of snow was gone from our yard, our grass was raked and our yard was ready for Mother Nature to rain down on my brown grass and green it up. Instead, she decided one more snow storm would be the perfect plan….I however, completely disagreed with this plan. Unbelievable!

To put it mildly, it was a long, hard week. I did get in some exercise but overall I did a lot of resting myself while getting up and down a million times to wipe kid noses. I can only hope next week we all feel a bit better and can possibly get back outside to play again….that is if all this snow melts.

Here’s what my workouts this week shaped up to be:

Saturday: 3.10 mile hike

IMG_3728Sunday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, hips/glutes

Monday: arms, shoulders, back routine,1.25 mile trail walk in the evening

Tuesday: recumbent bike 30 minutes, various yoga positions for stretching, 3 mile evening walk (one last outdoor walk before the snow covered our street once again)

Wednesday: rest…..to sick to exercise

Thursday: 30 minute recumbent bike, arms, legs and back weight routine, stretching

Friday: rest

How does illness affect your workouts? (Typically, I can push through illness but sometimes I just have to except that it’s my body’s way of saying….take a rest would ya!!!)

A Week Until Christmas….Are You Ready?

We have had one busy week. From getting all the last minute prep things done for Christmas to attending holiday parties….it’s been crazy.

Let’s see, our three Christmas gathering menus are made, my boys have their shopping done(not wrapped but at least done) and I have read my fair share of Christmas stories to my kiddos that I think I could tell them by memory. We even found time to do a little car shopping during the week….a bonus. All that being said, I feel like I am ready to conquer the next week.

Here is what I did for stress relief this week:

Saturday: gym: 30 minute elliptical, lower body weights, and stretching

Sunday: gym: 40 minute elliptical, core and abs

Monday: home: weight lifting 30 minutes,

gym: 40 minute elliptical, abs and stretching

Tuesday: rest

Wednesday: home: weight lifting 30 minutes

gym: 30 minute elliptical, lower body weights and abs

Thursday: home: weight lifting 30 minutes

Friday: rest

I decided to change up my ab routine this week by adding back into rotation inclined sit ups. It’s been years since I did this exercise and gosh could I feel it!!!! However, in only a week I have noticed great improvement and this makes me very happy.

I am really looking forward to some time off in the next two weeks since mornings are my favorite time to work out and during the work week this is not possible. I will admit, however, sleeping in tomorrow morning will be nice. It’s been a long but good week.
