Missing Summer

We are almost to the end of January and about this time every year I find myself really missing summer. Winters in Wisconsin are so long and seem to drag on forever. Shall we relive some summer moments together by looking back at sun filled summer activities? I say YES!

I miss floating on the lake covered in sunscreen and letting the birds fly above my head. (and hoping they don’t poop on me)

I miss watching my husband catch fish while I paddle my kayak searching for turtles.

IMG_8263

I miss the beauty nature provides us for free.

IMG_9054

I miss camping and sitting around the campfire with good friends while someone else does the cooking.

IMG_7641

I miss seeing the most majestic creatures watch over us from above.

I miss hitting the trail with my son.

IMG_8145

I miss relaxing on the river as my husband maneuvers us around boulders so I don’t have to get out of my tube.

IMG_9017

I miss finding big beautiful creatures that we literally stumble upon while hiking near the rivers edge.

I miss sunsets that make you forget all the bad in the world.

I simply miss feeling alive.

Hag in there….summer is coming…we just have to all hang on a bit longer.

Just Couldn’t Get It In Gear This Week

This week was strange having the holiday on a Tuesday. For me it’s much like having two Mondays and let’s face it, no one really likes a Monday. Although, we all make the best of what life dishes out and that is exactly what I did.

After our big hike Saturday I had originally planned on a gym visit Sunday. That is until I woke up and my legs/ankles told me this was not going to happen. So I simply took the entire day off from exercise which is something I never do. Even on my rest days I still find myself doing something active whether that be chasing after kids while playing in the yard, walking to the park or even doing yoga stretches to loosen up. Rest days for me typically are not great, I feel miserable when I stop moving but I know everyone needs a rest day and that is exactly what I did Sunday. All day I rested….I even laid in bed for two hours Sunday afternoon and watched a movie. It has been years since I have seen an entire movie.

Anyhow, here is what a holiday week of exercise turned out to be for me. Clearly, I just could not seem to get it in gear all week long. I would bet we all have these moments and I can only hope next week is a bit better.

Saturday: BIG HIKE…..read about it here if you missed it….9.7 miles whoo hoo!!!

IMG_8468

Sunday: rest day

Monday: morning weights in our home gym, 1.5 mile trail walk

Tuesday: 5 hrs.of kayak paddling…..wonderful, sunny hours;-)

If you missed it read about it here

IMG_8518

Wednesday: 30 minute recumbent bike in our home gym

Thursday: 2.5 mile steamy trail walk…..this was the hottest day all week

Friday: morning weights in our home gym

It seems the first half of the week I rested my sore ankles from the long hike Saturday. And then after paddling for five hours Tuesday I needed to rest my shoulders and arms and did not lift many weights. Although, remember, I do lift kids every day, all day for my job so really I was not resting my upper body much.

Paddling The Chain O Lakes in Waupaca, WI-Summer 2017

We finally made it to my favorite place to paddle…. Waupaca, WI and the Chain O Lakes. Upon waking up Saturday morning we had originally planned to head to Door County.  Although, after watching the weather forecast, I quickly changed my mind and suggested we head to Waupaca. You see, when its hot here in Green Bay then Door County is typically 20 degrees cooler and that would put their temps right about 70-75…..too cold for me to enter the water. And I had my heart set on paddling and doing some lake swimming. I suggested this quick change of plans to my husband and he said….let’s do it! So we did!

IMG_1266

Upon arrival, we were not surprised to see some very large trees down between the chain of lakes since we saw some big trees along the highway while driving. However, everything down and in the path of the lakes is easy to get around in both kayaks, canoes, and standup paddle boards.

IMG_8264

As usual, I go to paddle/swim and my husband never forgets his fishing pole. Three casts in and he caught his first northern pike of the day. It was going to be a good day;-)

IMG_8263

Since we arrived by 9:30 Saturday morning the parking lot was still easily doable and I made my way immediately to the public dock on Marl Lake to get in my swim I was hoping for. Marl is probably my favorite lake here…..it’s crystal clear and has the most turtles which I love. However, the public dock where we beach our kayaks to swim fills up quickly on nice days so I wanted to get this in before it was too busy.

Next, it was time to make our way back through the water path to another one of the lakes.

IMG_8286

At this point we passed by where we were parked and noticed that the number of people starting to show up had nearly tripled. Wow, they just kept coming and the lot was nearly full with cars, trucks, and trailers.

Making our way through Beasley Creek was once again a pain in the butt as always. We were hoping with the amount of rain we have had in the area lately that there would be enough water to paddle the entire creek but no luck. Although, this time we planned ahead just in case and my husband grabbed a piece of kayak strapping and threw it in his kayak. This way I held his boat, stayed in mine, and he pulled me and his kayak through with little effort.

IMG_8292

I enjoyed the ride and captured a beautiful hawk hiding out in the trees right next to the creek edge.

IMG_8296

Arriving at the next lake in the chain he again caught a fish after a few casts and this time it was a nice bass.

IMG_8297

IMG_8300

Our entire day was a success. No rain, abundant sunshine, warm water, and great fishing. And I even had my first swim of 2017 in a lake…..it was a great way to spend a Saturday.

Photos Speak Louder Than Words-Memorial Day Weekend 2017

Wow, what a weekend!!! We finally dusted off our paddles from the long winter, had a little fog one morning, rain another morning, and relived a place that we use to take our son every year when he was smaller. We enjoyed dinner outside at our favorite place….the front porch and we all are feeling rejuvenated and ready for a great summer ahead.

Did you do anything fun you care to share….if so feel free to comment?

Kayak Trailer Construction

This week we have made some real progress on the construction of turning our utility trailer into a kayak carrying trailer. By “we” I mean my husband has made progress.

Ever since we started paddling, we have always just lined them up side by side and wiggled and jiggled them until all vessels were in a happy place for travel.

IMG_1709

IMG_4353

And every time we buy a new kayak with a bit different shape or size, its gets a bit more complicated to find a happy spot that they can all be carried safely.

Now of course, we have seen kayak carriers on trailers for many years but time was always a factor. Let’s face it, summers are short and who wants to work on the weekends when you could be paddling. Well, we have now come to a point where we had no other option since our son bought a very long kayak and this has thrown our whole trailer situation into a tail spin.

IMG_4329

Thankfully, my husband is an engineer by profession and can literally come up with a plan for almost anything. And he is a pack rat (which I consider his second profession) which actually turns out to be a bonus in this situation. He has had pipes laying around in our garage rafters for years with no good reason until now. They are what he is using for the frame work that the kayaks will be braced on for travel.

IMG_4377

Evey night this week he has spent time drilling, measuring and making progress.

IMG_4372

All that is left to do is add are few more bolts, cover a few more pipes with pool noodles for protection, and a test drive to a body of water somewhere. Now, whether that will be this weekend or not….we shall see.

Let’s Go Paddling

Saturday my husband and I decided to paddle somewhere we have never paddled before….Cave Point County Park in Door County. We have hiked and explored here many, many times before but have never ventured out into the big open water with our kayaks. Seeing this beautiful place from another perspective was so nice.

We packed up our gear,

IMG_4353

grabbed an iced coffee for the road and

IMG_4351

checked the weather and wind direction one last time before heading out.

We arrived to see the water was calm and calling our names. Not quite calm enough for me to open the dry bag and risk taking out my camera at the gorgeous rock caves, but calm enough to grab a few pics here and there of the other areas.

IMG_4354

IMG_4357

I was amazed by how many other groups had decided to do this same thing. There were kayakers everywhere. From guided classes going on to private parties just out enjoying the day.

IMG_4361

IMG_4367

Thankfully our son was not along since we witnessed one of his biggest pet peeves ever. Two newbies who clearly had no idea how to hold their paddle. Although, if it works for them, then it’s all good.IMG_4363

Eventually we hope to get back to river kayaking before summers end here in WI. However, truth be told, this is the one thing that still gives me some pain when I do it. I am not sure if its the position I am in or the act of paddling but there is no denying its there. Which means Sunday then brought a day on the couch with my heating pad and some rest. Which is not great for someone who loves summer and just wants to be outside enjoying every last second. So whether or not I attempt a river with rapids and current battling against me has yet to be determined.

Picture Perfect Weekend

I have one word for this past weekend…….AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

It started with the making of some sangria slush.

IMG_3802

To taking my last day of the sunshine vitamin until next fall.

IMG_3807

Washing our bedding and winter jackets to hang outside for freshness. IMG_3808

I cleaned the last remnants of winter from the inside and outside of our vehicles.

IMG_3811

Had my wonderful, willing husband pressure wash all my outdoor play toys.

IMG_3812

We ate our first meal outside this year. Something I LOVE to do.

IMG_3814

We then took a trail walk to end a big day. It was wonderful to see no more ice bergs floating around and wildlife enjoying the sunshine as much as we did.

IMG_3826

IMG_3838

Sunday brought just a few little chores around the house and then we decided we just had to give paddling a try. Its been so long since our kayaks have been in the water, with my husbands back injury last summer and my recent surgery…..we just had to see if we still had it in us to paddle. Clearly we did and it felt wonderful to be in the water again.
