Sister Bay, WI Disc Golf

Sister Bay, WI has tons of fun to offer and now they have added a disc golf course to the mix. Located on Woodcrest Rd. between County ZZ and Scandia Rd., just East of town at the sports complex.

New courses are often hit or miss since we have played many in our area. Sadly, this one has to be added to the miss list for me but here it my review of it anyhow.IMG_1265

Upon arrival you will find ample parking and bathrooms are available.

IMG_1260

We could not find any course map here when we arrived although the course itself is not hard to follow once you locate basket number one.

IMG_1261

It ultimately takes you in a circle around the entire sports complex and back to the parking lot. The entire course is on mowed grass.

IMG_1267

It had one fairly large hill but nothing that is not doable.

IMG_1263

The end of the course brings you through some prairie grass and very near a lot that looked to be for boat/camper storage. For this reason we skipped these two holes since I know I would not want anyone…good or bad….throwing a hard plastic disc near our boat.

IMG_1271

Another thing I did not care for about this course was that if a soccer game for instance would be going on and you accidentally threw your disc incorrectly, it could easily interrupt the other players on the field. The field line is very close to the tee pad #6 that you can see in this picture.

IMG_1268

This is actually where my disc fell on this particular hole…right in the back side of the goal net. Thankfully, no other games were being played at this time.

IMG_1269

For me, this course was not a challenge and it also was not interesting. Mowed grass for the entire course offered no variety. No trees offered no challenge. And if the complex was full and other games such as baseball and soccer would be happening at the same time I can see this as a disaster waiting to happen. I guess in my opinion, its just too much packed into a small area. However, if your looking for a great course just to practice throwing, then this would be a great starting place.

Unplugged For Five Days….Amazing!

We just finished up five days off from both our jobs and spent the majority of it together…..we so needed this time. Never knowing when or if work travel plans will affect our lives has become a way of life for us. So spending time together when we can is crucial to our relationship. With the bonus of Independence Day falling mid week this year we decided to take the remainder of the week off and just be us. No work, no email, no schedule, no cell phones, no nothing. IT WAS SO NICE!

IMG_1224

Let’s start with the holiday….it was HOT once again. We actually all had off and had planned the night before to disc golf as a family. This quickly fell through when I woke up after a very long night of not feeling well. So I decided to stay home and let my husband and son go alone. They soon returned after only nine holes extremely hot and miserable. Gosh, was I happy I did not go with. The remainder of the day we hung out as a family indoors. It was nice and quiet.

Thursday my husband and I headed to Milwaukee, WI to check out a new mall I have been eyeing up for quiet some time now and of course make a Trader Joe’s trip.

IMG_1283

The mall was a bust…..just not impressed at all. Trader Joe’s was fabulous…..gosh, I wish we would get one closer to us here in Green Bay!!!!

Friday the humidity finally broke and that meant we could have some fun outdoors. Say no more, I was packed and ready to go in less than an hour. Snacks, hydration, tubes, hat, sunscreen, bug spray, and sunglasses.

IMG_1288

We chose to once again float our favorite nearby river in our tubes. I love doing this. It’s so relaxing listening to the birds and just floating along. It took us 4.5 hours to float from the starting point to our end point and it was exactly what I needed. It was hot and sunny the entire river. My husband actually spent more time out of his tube than in it since it was so nice.

IMG_1303

IMG_1328

Him being outside of his tube offered lots of exploring of the river bottom.

IMG_1306

IMG_1335

IMG_1329

The dragon flies were very friendly also. They literally had no fear of us at all.

IMG_1302

IMG_1320

IMG_1323

IMG_1326

The biggest bonus of the day is when we came upon these two beauties. I know the picture is blurry but I did the best I could from my tube on moving water.

IMG_1341

Saturday it was father and son time….which meant mom got some time alone to catch up on laundry, do some house chores, go to the gym.

IMG_8929

I also had time to prepare a meal that actually took a bit of thought instead of throwing something together fast after a long day. Pizza wonton cups (recipe here) and summer squash were a perfect summer dinner. IMG_1281

Sunday again was an early morning rise and shine event since fishing was not all that great Saturday they decided to take the boat this time to their favorite fishing lake and try again. With the heat expected by mid day to be once again high, they left super early in the morning. And since I am a morning person, I went for a 4 mile hike on a local trail before the heat of the day set in.

IMG_8917

Dinner was another cool and refreshing summer meal of Greek salads for everyone.

IMG_8941

We sure had a great few days….some alone time and some family time. Unfortunately, like most good things though, it had to end and it’s now back to work for everyone.

Jacksonport, WI Disc Golf Course

We recently played disc golf for the first time at a new course located in Jacksonport, WI. If you are familiar with Door County, WI you know that they have it all….great food, drinks, water sports, unique shopping, great state parks, and now they even have disc golf.

The course is located on County Rd. V just off the main drag in Jacksonport. Easily to locate…just watch for the sports complex.

IMG_1239

The course is 9 baskets and is very easy to follow. All the baskets are very nicely marked which is great if you know anything about disc golf. Some courses are like a maze and you can only hope to be going in the right direction but not this one.

IMG_1244

At the beginning, near the building, you will find the map, a donation box if you wish to donate, and a box with score cards inside.

IMG_1242

IMG_1241

The course itself leads through grass, a few small hills, some trees, a pine forest, and  some prairie grass also.

IMG_1254

IMG_1247

It’s not a hard course by any means, but it still offers some challenging spots especially if you are like me and often throw it right into the trees and high grass. And then you beg your husband (like I did) to go find it since snakes live in the trees and high grasses…..ewwww!

IMG_1255

Ultimately, the course ends at hole 9 with you throwing right past the baseball/softball field back to where you began at the starting point.

IMG_1258

For me, this course was great. If you are a professional this course would not be any challenge I would think. Although, if your looking to have some family fun or just give this sport a try, I would think it would be perfect. On the plus side, you are very near Lake Michigan and the temperatures are cooler, so depending on when you plan to visit you may need a sweatshirt. The course itself is very well maintained and was not busy when we played on a Saturday during the mid morning hours. I myself, would recommend this to anyone looking to have some fun.

Weekend Adventures: It’s Just Too Hot To Stay Home

In Wisconsin you can usually count on a few days each summer that it gets hot….I mean really HOT!!!! Add some wicked humidity and that is a great combo for sickness and heat exhaustion if you do anything outside for an extended period of time. However, I am a summer lover and refuse to miss even one weekend inside. So I had to think fast and come up with a plan for this past weekend since it was hot…..added with the humidity levels we all had here and we were easily above 100 degrees. Thankfully we are surrounded by water and many times the lake shores are much cooler. So that is where we headed and believe it or not, the temps varied greatly from place to place all day.

First, we started our day at a new park we stumbled upon. Lakeside Park is located in Jacksonport, WI and right along Lake Michigan. The main reason for stopping was to use the facilities but often times these are the times we find the best spots with very little people.

IMG_1230

IMG_1231

A nice area to park, great playground that is well kept for children to enjoy, bathrooms, and a short walk to a public beach(no lifeguards….swim at your own risk). If you can tolerate the water temperatures of Lake Michigan this would be perfect since it was not packed at all. Truthfully, it was us and one other lady. Not bad for a quick last minute stop.

IMG_1232

IMG_1236

Next, we headed to our actual destination. Our whole goal of the day was to try two new disc golf courses in this area and also stop by a friends cabin if we had time before returning back to Green Bay. The first course being right in Jacksonport at the sports complex center. IMG_1239

We played the nine baskets here and then headed a bit further to Sister Bay to try the next new course I had located in the area.

IMG_1252

Both course were fun, cooler than back home temperature wise, and both offered us some time in the sun. I plan to blog about both courses in more detail soon so keep reading and maybe you will want to give them both a try if your in the area.

After two course of disc golf we were hungry. It was about noon and we had seen a wayside with some nice shaded areas to stop for a quick picnic lunch before stopping in by a friends cabin in the area. Apparently, we were exactly half way to the north pole where we were going to enjoy lunch….or at least this is what the plaque said that we found.

IMG_1273

We found the only picnic table empty which was perfect.

IMG_1274

IMG_1277

After lunch we stopped in and enjoyed some float time with our friends. They have a cabin right on a lake in this area and its was great to catch up about their recent vacation and for my husband to finally have some down time from all his work travel he has had.

IMG_1278

IMG_1279

It was a full day of fun outside. I could not have planned us a better day to escape the heat.

Real Quick Pop In Post

This past week was a whirlwind. Once again my hubby was traveling, I was solo, every night had something in it I needed to tend to, and now I am really looking forward to some down time.

Food prep was basic since it was just me. Some cinnamon apples, veggies and homemade dip, and an quick cucumber salad to pair with any meal.

IMG_1204

I also blended some carrot puree for my little people to eat for meal time. I had it all cleaned up and then realized I dated the containers wrong….life goes on. No big deal!

IMG_1216

And the event that made the week was when I went with a friend to attend a food truck rally. Interesting how many food truck are coming about in this area.

IMG_1213

Truck of choice this evening was the King Of Philly’s. Our orders came quickly and both tasted wonderful.

IMG_1207

IMG_1210

Next week I plan to share our weekend fun, two disc golf courses we recently visited and what I thought of each, and then it’s July 4th. Time to celebrate.

6 Weeks Ago We Had A Major Snowstorm…..Today We Broke Heat Records

I heard on the news this morning that 6 weeks ago we were digging out from our major record breaking snowstorm of 20+ inches of snow. Here was my husband shoveling off our roof to hopefully prevent it from collapsing.

IMG_0926

Fast forward to this weekend and we once again broke records but not with snow depth….this time with heat! Whew, it was hot….and for me to admit it was hot, you know it was HOT!!!! However, unlike that snowstorm where it kept me inside without any thoughts of venturing out, the heat wave we had this weekend did just the opposite. I pressed pause on the life calendar and enjoyed each day out and about doing what we love to do in the great outdoors.

First, we played a round of disc golf at one of WI most challenging disc golf courses. It is located in Manitowoc, WI right on the lakeshore so visiting the beach while we played was quite convenient.

IMG_1090

IMG_1097

IMG_1092

The next day we hiked one of my favorite trails located near Oshkosh, WI called Terrell’s Island. (more info on this trail is located on the hiking trails page)

IMG_1061

IMG_1060

I love this trail since wildlife can always be seen at any time of year.

IMG_1086

IMG_1082

IMG_1072

IMG_1075

Not once have I visited without seeing at least one snake…..today I got a bonus with the one snake seen whom was already dead and half eaten by something. This is just the way I prefer to see these creatures.

IMG_1089

This trail literally weaves through the water the entire 3.8 miles and offers much to see. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking to escape the heat. There is no sun protection so remember sunscreen!!

IMG_1065

IMG_1064

IMG_1101

The remainder of the weekend we spent together doing odds and ends, like shopping, cutting the lawn, laundry, etc.. I needed to throw together more bean burgers since we had eaten the last batch.

recipes here and here (minus the spinach since I forgot to buy some)

IMG_1059

I also worked on organizing the weeks events coming up since its a shortened week with the holiday Monday and I also have a day off to prepare for our sons moving date. It’s almost here and I do believe we are as ready as we can be at this point. It’s been a long haul for sure since finding a reasonable apartment that was not in a terrible neighborhood was the hardest part. Although, we did it and it’s happening soon.

So you may wonder what is next for my husband and I. Well, I hope to change a few things. I want to go more veggie based in our meals by deleting meat at least half the time instead of only twice a week like now. We will never remove meat completely but I know we could easily do half and half. I also am working on turning our sons room into our office area. This could take some time but eventually I hope to be done by July. Right now, those are the only “for sure” items on the list. I am tossing around a few more ideas in my head, but if your husband is anything like mine, you have to bring these up slowly and not overwhelm them to quickly.HAHA! So, for the time being, I am just going to try and make it through the next week or two. I hope to begin blogging regularly again in regards to our meal plans which I know you all ask for me to continue. And I will for sure share our summer adventures here as we do them. I just need life to slow back down and offer me time to breathe.

The Rough Draft In Our Book Of Life Is Beginning

The rough draft in our book of life has begun and when I say rough I mean rough! Clearly, as you look back, the last time I blogged there was still snow on the ground. That was 10 days ago. Wow, where does time go?

OK, so without wanted to jinx anything here, I want to fill you in a bit on where we are since I get lots of support from friends and family that read here on the blog. I will admit, not proudly by any means but it is what it is…..here goes…..we have not eaten at our dinner table in well over 9 days!!!!! For this I am ashamed. Although, I have managed to precook meals in the morning hours to enjoy when we all do finally arrive home to enjoy them where ever this shall be in our home. I mentioned in the last post we have been apartment hunting with our son. Everyone…this has been SCARY!!!! Coming from a mom who does not always agree with her son…..we have been seeing eye to eye on most things lately and for this I am so thankful. Dad on the other hand is much more verbal and will tell him straight up when he don’t like something. I am more of a live and learn type of mom….however, unless it is just something I cannot look past and must give my input. Anyhow, here’s where we are with this….his one and only application for a place has been submitted and now we wait and pray. I am going with the hope of, if its meant to be it will be. Time will tell.

In between all the evening showings we had scheduled we took weekends and days to get other stuff done. That is when the tools for the other chores did not break while trying to get things accomplished. Frustrating I tell you….simply frustrating!

IMG_0959

IMG_0934

I have been searching high and low for furniture and home items for our son in his preparation to move out of our family home and this too has been a battle. Garage sales here are mostly on Thursday and Friday and by Saturday if they are still happening all the good items have been scarfed up already. And Saturday is the only day I have to garage sale since I work. Although, we have lucked out on a few items and dad is lending a hand to fix, repair, and create quite the unique DIY home decor for when the big move finally happens.

IMG_1023

IMG_1022

Also, with a well deserved needed break from daily life we escaped for our first camping…ok really it was glamping since technically we slept in cabins and not tents….trip of the year.

IMG_1015

IMG_0980

We were joined by my brother, sister in law, and our nephew on this trip for the first time. It was fun…we hiked the entire bluff lake loop at Devil’s Lake State Park here in Baraboo, WI and enjoyed the great outdoors.

IMG_0984

IMG_1008

IMG_0990

IMG_0993

IMG_0999

We even dusted off the discs for disc golf while we were here and played a few rounds. When its your first time out for the season we found that things are a bit rusty and you often end up searching out your disc in the trees.

IMG_0968

IMG_0979

It was a nice break from our home life chaos. We had a great time, I was sore from the first big hike of the year until Tuesday and I don’t think any of us were ready to wake up and leave Sunday morning. Especially their pup, Coconut, who simply was exhausted by all the outdoor activity from the day. What a cutie….

IMG_1019

For now I will leave you here….but you can bet this shall be continued eventually.
